I don't know if Chris genuinely wants to make himself believe that he's insane though.

He likes to think he's this omnipotent powerful being by using his childish imagination and escapist fantasies. Sure to us he seems like someone who should be thrown in the nut house (and he seriously should be getting thrown in when this is all set and done) but he doesn't think that he has a problem in that regard, he's had this massive disgust about his autism in the past and he doesn't like to dwell on any feelings of hindrance or self doubt.

For that reason alone he wouldn't want to give the judge the impression that he's insane, and even though his lawyer will probably use the angle for the defence that they're unnecessarily "kicking the autistic" with whatever he's charged with, it will definitely irritate Chris big time, and honestly that would be the icing on the cake to see him sperg out at someone who dares to criticise his poor mental state.

Yup. There's no way Chris's ego would ever allow him to try an insanity plea, even if that was a clearly viable option. He might hint at disabilities in passing in order to shut someone up immediately, but he gets genuinely angry when people make honest suggestions that he might have an intellectual impairment, etc. I think that's why the word "naive" pisses him off so much. When someone calls him naive he implicitly associates it with his social impairments resulting from autism, so they are effectively calling him "disabled." That is also why I don't believe Chris is trying to present as insane with his Christ shit, he's just coping for his own sake and this is his characteristically bonkers way of doing that.

Electroconvulsive therapy is actually still in use, but mostly for things like schizoaffective symptoms and extreme bipolar disorder. It also tends not to be covered by Medicaid, so no way will Chris be getting it. (Though it'd be funny to watch.)

Medication might help him, but mostly he has to want to not be a shitty human being. So not much hope of that either.

He's a public defender. He defends low lifes all the time, and no that does not usually mean getting them found not guilty.

He's usually in private practice for lots of money. He's not some overworked, underpaid schlub.

It's disappointing seeing how there are still idiots entertaining the idea of a NGRI plea.

Agreed as to such a defense actually working, but there are reasons for advancing an argument that do not necessarily rely on it having much likelihood of success. Whether or not it is in the form of an actual insanity defense, it is very likely that the defense and prosecution will both enter psychiatric evidence.

Where it is more likely to have actual impact is at sentencing.

With the latest "Jesus" development, though, it has become more of a minefield, as that is so stereotypically fake insanity it could actually turn the jury against him even further.

And refractory, i.e. otherwise untreatable depression. It is not the shit you saw in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest any more, but it's still generally unpleasant with bad side effects like memory loss. It would not be used for autism or goofy beliefs or just being a complete asshole. Autism is a developmental disorder and once you've developed, you're fucked for life. Autists also sometimes degenerate in middle age and can lose whatever coping skills they've learned.

Part of me wonders if they'll end up getting Chris re-evaluated and his eternal autism diagnosis gets changed to Aspergers.

That diagnosis has been abolished. It's now all Autism Spectrum Disorder.

There's going to be some aggressive psychotherapy Chris is going to need so that he'll never refer to himself as Jesus or any OC ever again.

I recommend the Ludovico technique.

Ordinarily out of court statements are inadmissible but this is a voluntary statement made by Chris that is adverse to his interests, so it is admissible. Admissions of guilt are so contrary to the interests of the person making them that they are seen as reliable, i.e. nobody would say such things unless they were true.

He'd seethe but he'd do it. He let Bell call him an "adult autistic child" even if he didn't like it, because it kept him out of jail. If he's facing life in prison he'll suck a mile of fucking dicks to get out of it. That guy is wrong. The council of Nicaea was literally about that question and they decided more or less what you just pointed out. They're separate aspects of the divine.
