This is why you most often see the insanity plea in death penalty cases. Only people who are quite literally going to be executed should consider them and only if they don't think they can get their punishment reduced to a life sentence.

There aren't all that many mental asylums around anymore and it is no longer sufficient to be crazy to be locked up. You would have to be a clear and imminent danger to people to even be considered to be locked up.

The only person Chris is a danger to is Barb, and it is much easier and significantly cheaper to just issue a restraining order than to have tax-payers pay for his hostice and lego.
Chris is not going to an asylum for this reason. He will either go to prison or he will be released and become homeless and live under a bridge. No one will pay for a non-violent insane person which will never re-offend to go to a costly tax payed institution. No one.
