Chrono Trigger/Cross

John Romero thinks this is the best game of all time.

And plenty of people think Doom is the best game of all time, so Toriyama must be the greatest 20th century artist.

I finished the game again and did the dream team run (with Crono and marle). Honestly, it surprised me how much I liked the game more after playing after two years. I know cross is coming to PC should I buy it to try it out or look at other posts is the sequel that is in the wrong franchise.

Yeah I'm going to fire up the OG cross before the clean up hits.

I gotta say another one of my all time favs is FF6 and I know this sounds like nit picking but HOLY FUCK the text screen change is eye bleeding bad and really irked me. Esp in older games, I like pixel stuff but I dunno how to feel about FF6 pixel remaster, so I'm a bit worried what will happen to cross and gonna get it fresh in my mind before a replay.

Square Enix has confirmed that Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition will have an Asian-English physical release for Switch.

Not surprising since most Square Enix titles on Switch that are digital-only in most regions get one at some point, some much sooner than others.

Oh good, I've always wanted to put all of Chrono Cross in my mouth

Since the remaster is apparently shit, I started replaying Cross on Duckstation. With the internal resolution kicked up to 4k and using the various enhancements the emulator has to combat the PSX's weird graphic quirks (the strange wobbly textures and geometry, specifically) the game looks a lot better than the remaster. The only new option from the remaster I'm missing is the ability to turn off enemies since their constant respawning makes exploration and backtracking a chore at times.

Anyway, I'm having fun with it. I had forgotten about Leena. Poor girl gets NTR'd by a mouthy, blonde miscreant with a ridiculous name.

There's plenty of autism happening on the Steam community board for Chrono Cross. Eren here insists the low score is unfair, and the game should be judged on its own merits (despite being 22 years old and very well reviewed when it was new): https://archive.ph/9USqZ

The commenters are not having it, though it does devolve into five pages of boring autism.

Another guy points out the game has some new censorship in it. Oh no, did they remove the fun accents that gave the game a unique flair, and flatten out all the dialog to be boring and inoffensive?

Oh, wait, no, he's referring to how Marcy's model doesn't show her ass anymore. https://archive.ph/7mz4w

This is Marcy:

And the game does explicitly say, in her character profile, that she is 9.

The coping is unbelievable.

That's the hill you retards want to die on? Really? Being all anti-censorship, but then hinging it on whether or not you can see a canonical 9-year-old's panties in a niche game that appeals most to 30-somethings is exactly how you get more censorship. Lord almighty, it's like the perfect gay op to start equating anti-censorship with pedophiles.

There is some other changed stuff I noticed when I tried out a pirated copy. Off the top of my head, in the original Leena's little brother asks you to calm her down by making her into a good wife. The wife part is now gone. It's just retarded that they put resources towards censoring dumb shit rather than fixing the weird slowdowns and graphical glitches that emulators now fix.

Anyway, some other random thoughts as I've replayed CC:
- The game is really reactive. Most of the NPCs who gush over Nikki will have unique dialogue if you have him in the party. You can also 'use' key items on different NPCs and get reactions out of them.
- The game has more route branches than I remember. You can tell Kid you're not interested in joining with her, which leads to new characters opening up. Being nice to Kid throughout the game (iirc) allows her to re-join earlier later on. Then there's which guide you go with for getting into Viper's Manor, and then of course whether or not you want to try to cure Kid later on.
- Speaking of the Viper's Manor recruit, it's weird that Nikki ends up having the most content out of them. I doubt most kids and teens were interested in him, and his method of joining is a bit more hidden than the others.
- The game gives no indication as to what part of the maps are interactive, which is annoying.
- The game is piss easy. Most normal encounters are over within two player turns. I do remember there being some difficulty peaks later on: Miguel, Garai, Dario, and I think I remember the ghost ship being weirdly hard.

So, how much of the steam bitching is legit, and how much of it is whiny tech-faggots bitching they're not getting 420FPS?

Asking on behalf of my wife. She absolutely adores CC, and is debating on picking it up. Dunno if she should, or just stick to emulators.

It still has weird slowdowns (which I've also noticed on Duckstation; the emulator will report running at 100% speed but the FPS during certain scenes and areas still drops) and it looks worse than what you can achieve with the emulator. Right now the only reason to buy it is for Radical Dreamers and to support the Chrono series, I guess.

I'm too lazy to read through the details of all this shit but technical issues, censorship, and lack of improvements is disappointing. I'll make an exception because it's Chrono though. I really want to play through the game fully and finally beat it, plus Radical Dreamers.

If we want a Chrono Trigger remake or sequel this has to sell well, so I hope it gets support and is rated better.

Kid kind of makes an off-hand comment about working with the Radical Dreamers. Is there any extended lore that explains what happened to her gang? I assumed the Magical Dreamers were thieves disguised as entertainers. But it's just another non-important character who's needed to advance the story.

Nikki mentions a lady referring to his music as "magical dreams" or something, and Kid says she knows who that was (I assume Lucca). The game is full of vague connections like that.

iirc, Kid is the Radical Dreamers -- she started thieving once Lucca's orphanage burned down and tales of her exploits became exaggerated. The name does imply a group or gang but I don't recall there being mention of any other members.

There is an easter egg in Chronopolis that plays the introduction text to Radical Dreamers. If Kid is in your party, she mentions that they were some "old mates" of hers, which doesn't make much sense, since one of the two other characters was Serge. Granted, Serge is entirely different in both appearance(A hooded thief that uses a dagger) and personality(In that he actually has one due to being the one telling the whole story). In fact, pretty much every character(Riddel, Lynx, General Viper, ect), place(Viper Manor) and object(Frozen Flame) that is in both Radical Dreamers and Chrono Cross are pretty much only nominally the same character/place/thing, outside of Kid who is sort of has the same personality, but not completely(and also looks different outside of her being a blonde in both games).

Sadly, I am not surprised that people are complaining that they can't gawk at the panties of a nine year old character.

Yes they should have put actual effort into the release. But lolitards not being catered to doesn't really equate. It's a very minor fix.
