Let's Sperg Chrono Trigger - Hey Goku, let's go time travelling!

CWtUAtQ.png

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vcug4gHFwZU

Only, it’s a shitty future. That door has the same seal on it that the black boxes we’ve been finding have, and is sealed by the same force. An NPC later on will comment that even dynamite won’t make it budge.

t2ldoqR.png

The world map does a lot to add to the feeling. While 600 AD is mostly just copy-pasted 1,000 AD, 2,300 AD SUCKS! Even the music sucks!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkFs68_C6V8

Head south to Trann Dome. No, it’s not full of dangerhair Trannies, thank god. The first NPC inside runs a shop and has armor upgrades for everyone, along with a new gun for Bulma. Go for broke!

The rest of the dome’s NPC’s are suitably miserable, and the “inns” are called “Enertrons”. They restore you fully in a few seconds, but leave you hungry.

HymQ0Ta.png

This does nothing, just sounds bad.

You’re directed to go past Site 16 to the north, and on to Aerris Dome where there might be some food. Spoiler: There isn’t.

Track: Site 16

V7WVZOm.png

Be mindful of the rat like enemies. If they touch you, they’ll steal some consumable item and run off. No battle, either. Also, be mindful of Floral Horror enemies, they can heal the entire “enemy team”, so kill them first.

The treasures are hard to detect in these areas, but worth seeking out. There’s a Berserker Ring (think permanent Berserk from Final Fantasy) and a Silver Bow for Nadia. There's one just to the left of the rat in this image, to give you an idea of how easily they blend in.

In the second area, one will find gooey ooze type enemies that are practically immune to physical attacks. They need elemental attacks to hurt them, which basically means Bulma’s flamethrower or the Fire Whirl combo are our only options at the moment.

XO38B8r.png

After we cross the ruins, we reach Arris Dome. The Elder asks where we came from, and when we tell him, the people react in amazement. We’re told there’s a food storage below, but the robots are active and won’t let them through. Hey look at that, we have our next objective-but tonight is going to be a shorter update, time constraints mean I can’t go as far as I want to. But hey, at least it gives me good stopping points.

Will Goku and friends manage to defeat the robot guardians? Will we recover the food stores for a happy populace? And what happened to make the world this shitty? Find out next time on Chrono Trigger Kai!

When I first ordered this game 8 years ago, I got a shitty bootleg version that got me stuck at the first time-travel screen. I had to wait two weeks before I could get an official copy and finally play it. I've been considerably more careful with my Amazon purchases ever since.

It was well worth the wait, and wherever I go the DS cartridge is never too far from me.

Now that the weekend's over, back to time travel!

kHDWvv4.png

And if, like me, you happen to know the password, it won't let you imput it until you actually find it. So our options are limited to the ladder on the left. This is the first room we encounter after going down below.

Also, I remember the SNES being a lot more purple, since it was all they had in the limited color palette to simulate rust and decay. Not that I mind this, but I dunno, the purple was just more interesting to look at, rather than being "Fallout: Chrono Trigger Edition".

z0BAnV8.png

The ladder leads to the rafters, a maze that was originally way more confusing back in the SNES version. However, we have a map that's filled in for us, removing any difficulty.

Entering the room beyond welcomes us to klaxon alarms, and an immediate boss fight.

Iba0uh9.png

How nice of them to put the boss fight right at the start.

The Guardian Boss (that's this thing) launches two Bits, or "Pods" in this version. Only they attack. If you attack the Guardian, the Guardian will launch a counterattack, the strength of which depends on the number of bits alive. If both are up, everyone gets hit with a 50 Damage Delta Attack, but if only one bit remains, then only the attack gets hit with "AmpliFire". They both suck, as Goku only has 174 HP Max at the moment, so the counters will swiftly ruin your party. The Guardian will periodically revive (or perhaps just bring in more?) bits once both are killed, so hit him hard when you can. The bits have 200 HP, the Guardian has 1,200 and is strong against fire.

That's really all there is to it-kill the bits, kill him. Got it? Good. If you're strong enough, you'll kill him after the second round of pods.

HfXwjde.png

:(

Behind the message box is a dead man, with a seed in his hand (yes, a seed), and a scrap of paper that tells us the "rat" we saw back on the rafters is not a statue like we thought, but a being that knows the secret of this dome. There's also a chest with a Mid-Ether. Yay.

Catching the rat gets us the passcode for the first door. It's "L+R+A", performed in front of the console that demanded it.

In the next room, we can create some monster on robot violence. The rat enemies and the Exterminator robot don't get along-the Exterminator attacks "detected motion sources" and that includes the rats as they run around all over the place. There are also creepy bugs to fight. Eww.

4aOXu8N.png

In the room after that, we get a surprise guest appearance from the Sentry Bots, from Fallout. Good to see them still getting work.

There's a lot of enemies in that room, and some of them are the ooze things that you have trouble handling right now. I recommend skipping most of the encounters here, if possible.

LSRR4aB.png

Beyond that is the Supercomputer, where Bulma searches for Temporal Distortions and finds a new gate for us to use over in Proto Dome. Nadia pushes a random button, and we get the Day of Lavos.

yvtp4Ro.png

Oh I see. When they said Day of Lavos, they meant apocalypse of hellfire and suffering.

Nadia refuses to believe that this is our future, and decides the best course of action is changing history, "just like Goku did when he saved me!" That wasn't really changing history, more setting right what went wrong, and do we really want to change history when they last time we did that, the entire Guardian Royal Family (or at least, the Queens) were killed off?

Also, saying No when Nadia asks if you wanna save the world gets Bulma to answer yes for you. Don't you love having choice?

Back up top, Nadia goes off about how this is our future. Seriously woman, shut up before you nuke the goddamn timestream. We give the elder the seed, and Nadia encourages everyone to hold out and not give up.

Track: The day the World Revived: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5utjkhqnQs

g9xbtL0.png

In the original, the word was "healthy". The elder gives us the Jetbike key, and we're off on our next great adventure!

What dreadful monsters await in Site 32? What secrets lie in Proto Dome? And what about the mysterious sewers that lead to Death Mountain? Find out next time, on Chrono Trigger Kai!

I didn't play Chrono Trigger until 2002 when I was working overseas and had a shitty laptop that could only handle emulators, but that made for a really good 2 weeks or so of downtime in BFE.

I played it on ds, it was pretty neat.

Ground at the start to afford a silver sword or whatever it was early, because I'm completely insane.

I played the DS version as well. Managed to beat every single boss in the game, and I have the strongest sword for Crono.

I am a man of culture and taste. I hold in my hand the complete works of William Shakespeare, and I have considered using Soundcloud to record me reading the Sonnets of William Shakespeare. I have read and enjoyed the works of many incredible writers and poets. The Stolen Child still gives me shivers when I hear it read. Modern authors also move me, if you've never read Cormac McCarthy's The Road, you owe it to yourself to do so.

I say all this, because we are going into the Sewers in this update as a slight detour, and I will still make more fart jokes than any man ever should. Forgive me, o gods of comedy, for I take the lowest of low roads.

Now, technically, we don't need to go to the Sewers until later, but doing it now A: Gets us more XP, B: Gets us some cool items, C: Makes it easier on us later.

4R0533J.png

Sadly, Krawlie has no one similarly named to him that I can use to make a silly joke. There is also no way to catch the little fucker and skin him alive before he reports. Head to the right for a quick fight and 600 G in a treasure chest.

These underlings talk about the bridge that was here, however, it apparently grew legs and walked away. This is the future, I'm pretty sure it could. Or maybe all the poo gas corroded it in 2.2 seconds.

rBzQBB4.png

The second level is nothing but traps. No, not the kind who take so much dick up their ass their farts no longer make noise, I mean the lethal, deadly, kill you kind. This cat, if "spoken" too, makes a meow that summons monsters. There's a bunch of similar traps, including the audible ding that a Save Point makes when you step in it. I am NOT kidding. It's not even a real Save Point, it despawns once the monsters are killed. You can skip almost all the traps, just don't touch anything. Some things don't even need to be interacted with, just touching them (like the Save Point) will trigger it. If you head to the left, there's a diary that tells you this, but how likely are you to read it versus blundering into every single trap, like I did my first playthrough?

Not this one, though. This time I trigger the traps for the XP!

There is one trap that I think can't be avoided-when passing by a piece of smelly cheese, guaranteed to give even the most lactose tolerant a gas problem, a rat enemy passes by and squeaks, summoning two fish-folk.

The end of this trap filled level returns us to the first level, where we see the frogs discuss that some switches can be activated to extend bridges (there's also a switch we have to hit to open a door before we can view this scene, making it half-redundant). Immediately after that, we can get a Rage Band from a chest (grants a 50% counter rate and is great for Chrono), and also meet Krawlie. Heal up at the chest of the Rage Band, or risk going in with sub-par HP.

QYrAUV6.png

Krawlie is a joke. He has 500 HP. To put it in perspective, Yakra, the first boss of the game, had 920 HP. That's right, nearly a thousand, and he was 5 levels ago at least! Sure, Krawlie has more Defense, but he's such a joke that any guide I find says "oh, just hit him a bunch". He does have a "Mash/I'll Shred Ya!" attack that reduces a character to 1 HP, but other then that, he is not worth even thinking about.

Man, even the first few bosses in the old Final Fantasy games put up more of a fight. Astos had his Death spell, and even the Sergeant of FF2 would ruin an unprepared party. Krawlie? Dead immediately after his 3rd attack. I don't think any of the FF4 bosses even died before getting at least 4 attacks off.

One Mid Potion later (that last attack was a "Mash ya" attack on Goku), and we're off to raise the bridges to make future treks easier. The switches for the bridges are all collectively on the far sides of the bridges they raise, meaning going from Death Mountain to Aerris Dome is easy, Aerris Dome to Death Mountain (which is OUR route) is hard.

t4CEeeY.png

Don't just leave when you reach the ladder at the end. Proceeding past it gives us a Thunder Blade for Chrono, which promises to "strike like lightning", affecting enemies who are weak to it. We can also hit the switch for the bridges.

wJ9KgLj.png

On the other side, we reach Death Mountain. You can't see it, but the powerful winds will throw you off the mountain. Doesn't matter how far you run, it'll throw you away. We'll come back here later.

fbaVUwD.png

This guy farts out a metric fuckload of foreshadowing, just by naming stuff we'll find later. I transcribe the important parts for the thread:

"Schala! Oh how I've missed you...No! You musn't go to Death Peak! It has to be the right time, and, and they must guide you, or else the way is barred. Say! Have you seen my masterpieces? The Ocean Palace and the Blackbird? I designed and built them both you know."

Without anything else to do, because there's yet another sealed door blocking our way, we return to Aerris Dome for some much needed rest and saving.

Site 32 is devoid of enemies, with only a chest for a Mid-Potion. Right at the end is the Jetbike, using it or attempting to leave by heading to the right summons robots. It looks like we'll get a fight, but a mysterious voice interrupts...

QgWVayV.png

Music: Johnny of the Robo Gang
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCafsUJEem4

I really suspect his last name is "Blaze". He challenges us to a race-though it is possible to walk. That said...let's race!

vg21Jf0.png

Race Music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjX2_wDbx4k

I got this shot from after the race, but there is a little racing minigame. It's not much, you and Johnny will basically alternate being in first, though he can body block you by being in front of you-and you can do the same to him. You have three turbo boosts, try to save one for just before the finish line.

Winning doesn't give you anything. Not sure if losing forces you to repeat the challenge or not, but since I won, we can just proceed. Site 32 is the fastest area in the game because it's literally just the challenge, unless you walk.

Heading past Site 32, we come across a Derelict Factory. The way is blocked and we can't go anywhere inside, so we head down to Proto Dome.

3pzm0tb.png

Just our new best friend.

Also, out of nowhere, we get our first movie of the game! Took them long enough!

I didn't think Bulma could pull off a convincing rape face...but here we are.

Bulma decides to fix it, and Nadia worries it'll attack us. Bulma says it won't, that robots don't attack because they want to but because humans make them that way. The music here implies that Bulma doesn't want to see her inventions used for war (despite having a gun, though that might be a self-defense thing), and detests the fact that robots are used for combat.

1iHcO7s.png

Once Bulma fixes it, it starts asking for commands. It is unfallingly polite, calling Bulma "Madam Bulma", and a quick joke about how neither Bulma or Nadia like it when people are so formal ensues. It introduces itself as R-66Y, but Nadia says fuck that and asks Goku (i.e. us) for a better name.

I decide to name him Mosco, because it's one of the few robots from Dragonball I can find.

Music: Robo's Theme
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHEFrWspqIM

Bulma explains the situation-the apocalypse, the time warp, and the sealed door to the inner chamber. Mosco has the solution: there's an emergency power generator in the factory to the north that can help us open the door, but someone has to stay behind to ensure the door opens. Hello Arbitrary Party Limit! You must choose either Bulma or Nadia to stay behind. Since Nadia has healing abilities and Bulma doesn't, the choice is obvious. That said, Mosco also has a healing ability, so it's kind of up to you.

16YbQBW.png

Mosco has a giant pool of HP, and his lasers do "Shadow-like" damage, giving him a sort of pseudo magic. The factory is to the north and is our next dungeon, mandating that we take a break here before the update gets too long.

What horrors await in the Derelict Factory? Is our new ally hiding dark secrets? And who decided to make a robot arm out of tin?! Find out next time, on Chrono Trigger Kai!

If you lose the race, you get sent back to the beginning, where you can either repeat the challenge or fight your way through the area. It’s nothing you haven’t seen before; just more of the monster from Area 16.

You are indeed correct, hell, you can walk through if you win the race too (in case you want to go back to Arris Dome and don't want to race). The monsters aren't even useful for XP, either.

Robo/Mosco does have a Double Tech called "Rocket Roll" (who it's with I don't know), so yes, the "Robo-Roll" does exist. And it is hilarious that these two tracks sync damn near perfectly.

Approach the computer, and Mosco will turn off the laser barring our way (those two things on the sides are actually conveyor belts, and the laser barred us from going in the one that goes up).

m0jkpsE.png

They take conveyor belts FUCKING SERIOUSLY in 2300 AD. God help you if there's an emergency that requires someone to turn off the conveyor belt, or if we shut it off at the end of the day-you wanted to close up shop? Firing squad.

The elevator to the left leads to a laboratory. The first stop has a Save Point along with some slime monsters guarding a Treasure Chest (it has a Shelter). The next floor is inaccessible due to laser, for now. A third floor down is even more inaccessible, but it cockteases us by letting us think there's something there before laser block.

Going back to the Save Point floor, defeating the enemies causes the computer to turn on. Interacting with it causes the hatch to open, allowing us to part of the second floor down.

eH01hlc.png

After some more slimes, we reach a "main" room with a Titanium Vest off to the side. Give it to Goku, he could use it. There's also a Hammer Arm.

Activating the computer in this room deactivates the lasers and gets us attacked by five slime enemies. Goku's Wind Slash is great for dealing with them.

A door on the third floor demands a passcode that we don't have, so let's head to the Factory.

7wm4MoU.png

This is the Factory and Conveyor Belt that note meant. You can run along it to get some items, but if you run into a robot, just head back to the last "point" you were at, or else a Crane Arm will come down, grab you, and throw you into a battle against the security. The battle isn't hard, but it does reset your progress.

Ymx9wd7.png

After going against the conveyor belt, we learn some crane controls (which translate to buttons on our controller) and use them to remove some barrels in our way. With the barrels gone, we can go another room and learn the super secret code of X A B Y (come here even if you have the code, there's a Thunder Blade and a Bandit Bow waiting for looting).

L0SN4CH.png

Save your game once you have the code, and return to the bottom of the left side. Enter the code into the computer, and head forward. Throw the switch Goku is in front of and power will be restored! However, the security system will lock the factory down, and we need to get out. Elevators don't work, so we're stuck taking ladders...

tJqvlkd.png

And running into these guys, the R-XXY series. Mosco tries to say hello, only for his former buddies to punch him across the room. They then proceed to beat the shit out of him while calling him a broken, defective unit. Goku and Nadia (and Bulma, if she was here) are suitably horrified. They also state that their objective is the destruction of humanity, not their assistance. As you may guess, a boss fight ensues.

They only have 150 HP each, and are weak to Thunder. Your strategy will be different depending on who you brought, if you have Nadia, you're kinda stuck using Cyclone for AoE attacks, but if you have Bulma, you can Fire Whirl and use Flamethrower at the cost of not having easy healing-Mosco is out of commission for this fight. Dismantle the dismantlers quickly, before they do too much damage.

It should be noted, with the Rage Band, Goku can kill them all without even actually acting. A critical from Goku (assuming you equipped the Thunder Blade) can kill them in one shot, and Goku can crit on counters. Two and two equals destroyed robots.

aPFp8sO.png

After the fight, Nadia rescues Mosco from the garbage chute, and we slowly drag his ass all the way back to Bulma (I don't know what happens if Bulma's there, but either she fixes him right there or we take him back to Proto Dome anyway).

rOJQc92.png

In the process of fixing him, Mosco asks if we're trying to change the world. Bulma says that's the plan. She then asks what he wants to do. Mosco doesn't know how to respond, because, you know, robot. He says no one's ever asked him that, and after the repairs, he decides he wants to come with us. Yay! Time to ditch him on the back line and never use him again! (I'm only mostly joking about that).

We head on through the gate, but, something is wrong. The gate closes three times and the screen gets a blue tint...and we're sent off to somewhere weird.

Where will our party arrive next in the timestream? What secrets await us in far away times? Will we actually change the world? Find out next time, on Chrono Trigger Kai!

The kindly old man tells us that we are at the End of Time itself, and that when more than three people attempt to use a Gate, they get sent here. So, our party limit of three is mothercunting enforced.

One of us must remain. I choose Mosco. This is because the door behind the kindly old man leads to something awesome that Mosco can't partake of:

0ceKl4q.png

Spekkio, the Master of War, offers to teach us magic. He will kick our asses. In "practice" mode, he does magic attacks that deal close to 150 damage, meaning two hits (and he fires them off quick) will put us down. Beating him gets us a Magic Capsule and 5 Ethers.

If you manage to make it here at level 9 (which requires a LOT of running from combat), he will be in the form of a Prehistoric Frog. It's a really easy fight in that version, and you get an extra magic capsule for winning it.

Return here at level 29 and 39 for new forms (he actually changes at 20 and 30, but it's best to have the highest stats possible before fighting him). He gives more rewards for each form you beat, we'll get back to them.

Returning to the old man, he tells us to return to our era. He also tells us the bucket in the corner leads to the Day of Lavos-hey, the final boss accessible so early? This'll be a short game!

NFsvlo0.png

Yeah, trying to fight Lavos is not a good idea. His initial mode is a boss rush, and I forgot that Heckran occasionally counters with whole party hitting Water 2 and ended up getting this screen for the joke. I actually recommend losing to him just once, so you get a bad ending screen that's actually pretty damn awesome.

This ending, with minor dialogue changes, is preserved for the DS version. Good on them.

Anyway, let's return to 1000 AD. We won't be going to the Fair, we're hitting another gate:

hZlX2tw.png

A gate that has us emerging from the closet, meaning our party is one step above Tom Cruise when it comes to coming out of the closet. It turns out we're in Medina Village, a village of monsters. These guys are nice enough to tell us there's another human living to the west-it's been 400 years, so as they put it, stop living in the past.

mnOCuOV.png

If you recall the Fiendlord Statue from earlier, this is the same statue. It is worshipped by the monsters. Strange how the Fiendlord seems to be a human...

The market and inn owners will fight you if you try to use their services. You fought them back in the Cathedral, they are not hard, but the market owner charges absurd prices. Hell, even the inn is absurd at 200 G when we can go to the End of Time and get it for free.

H5UyQ7W.jpg

To the north are the Forest Ruins, where a Mid-Ether sits in a chest and this weird pyramid is here. Well, let's remember it for later and head west.

mdXRpLL.png

To the west is Melchior's Cabin, where he sells a few weapons. He offers a Bandit Bow and a Hammer Arm (both of which we have from the Derelict Factory), a Plasma gun (can inflict Stop on bots and is a stronger weapon for Bulma), and a Crimson Blade that gives Goku +2 Magic. He also sells Titanium Vests, which anyone can wear. Buy what you need, including some of the consumables he offers (extra shelters can be helpful!)

Behind Melchior's house is the entrance to the Heckran Cave. There's no way to get back home without going through it...so gear up for a visit to the Heckran Cave. One of the monster NPCs in the Elder's House in Medina (I...think it was in there) tells us the Heckran is weak to magic but near immune to regular attacks. Well, it's like this game is trying to get us to use magic!

Will Goku and his friends defeat the Heckran? Will they return home? And will they get a reward from the kid Goku saved from the guillotine? Find out next time, on Chrono Trigger Kai!

gsr6eay.png

The Heckran Cave is, well, it's kind of boring and more of a mini dungeon then a proper dungeon dungeon. If that makes sense. And well, it's really boring...I mean, we've had a secret basement under a Cathedral, an actual dungeon that bounced between two towers, and derelict factories...even the fucking sewers had more character than this place. There's no music either!

Most of the enemies have insane physical defense, but really low magic defense, allowing them to be one shot by magic. It's the same deal with Heckran himself, minus the "one shot" and replaced with "reasonably damaged". The cave's one save point is right outside his lair, so at least you get a chance to Shelter up before fighting him-go for broke blowing away the early enemies!

Nwlrkr6.png

Man, even the boss is kinda boring. Just a big ugly brute in a big ugly cave. If there's a low point in Chrono Trigger this has to be it. The fight is pretty easy, just watch for when he announces "Go Ahead! Just try and attack!" as he counters with Water 2 if you do hit him. He'll later announce 'brief counterattack break', so heal during the counterattack part and unleash hell when he takes a break. Other then that, just pound away at him.

wAYukbd.png

Heckran namedrops Magus after the fight, and Bulma theorizes that Magus created Lavos. We know the gate at the fairgrounds connects to the Middle Ages, so that becomes our next objective.

But we have some things to do first.

The pool behind Heckran spits us out next to Bulma's House, so we can talk to our various familes...except Nadia's. We're still on the NSA watch list over there.

tFW4Uob.png

Stopping by Bulma's house, chatting up her mom, and then talking to Taban on the first floor gets us Taban's Vest, which only Bulma can wear. As you can see, it's pretty damn solid.

23uynzq.png

Stopping by the market, having saved the kid, gets us 10 Mid Ethers. Pretty sweet reward!

Goku's mom is suitably panicked, but there's not much dialogue. She has more dialogue with Bulma about her working to hard on inventions then she does with the potential execution of her son. Weird.

The fair is still ongoing, but Melchior isn't around anymore. Hitting up the gate returns us to the End of Time, and then we head on back to 600 AD as both sides of the gate become available for use once you enter one side.

Will our party manage to defeat the fiendlord? Did Magus really create Lavos, and will the game be super short for it? And will we see Ginyu's triumphant return? Find out next time on Chrono Trigger Kai!

There's not much to do in town, and people do say that the army is gearing up to retake the bridge to the south. However, they need their provisions. Looks like it's up to us to go get some!

Head to the castle and head down to the kitchen. Don't worry, the soldiers are cool with us now.

cs6Cban.png

The brief stop in the kitchen reveals that he chef is actually the Commander's brother, and when we leave, he gives us the key item above. I hope it's at least a travel pack and not just one piece. We also get a Strength Capsule.

VRRUzWX.png

Once we give the food to the commander, Magus's troops launch their big attack. Talking to the Commander again has him ask if we'll help. Certainly will, we need to go that way! He gives us a Golden Helm (HIS Golden Helm) if we agree to help.

e8tbHbM.png

We meet Ozzie once we see those skeletons bump off a couple of soldiers. If you spoke to the Elder of Medina, it turns out the town elder of Medina is a descendant of this guy.

He's a dirty coward and we'll see why when we hit Magus's castle.

Fight your way through the enemies until you reach the end. You can attack Ozzie, and in fact, doing so after killing the other enemies is what ends the encounter. The skeletons require you to use magic (or, for some reason, Goku's wind slash) to do any significant damage. Explains how they're cutting through the human troops.

KWs23Nz.png

At the end, Ozzie throws together a bunch of skeletons who combine into Zombor, a non-indicative name if I ever heard one. Then again, Skeletor is a registered trademark.

Zombor is divided into two parts, Upper and Lower. The Upper body is weak to Ice and Shadow, while the lower is weak to Light and Fire. Kill the lower body first-it hits harder with a Quake style attack, and if the Upper Body is killed first, it MP Drains whoever did it and the Lower Body can then insta kill your team. So burn the legs first, then finish off the upper part. That's not to say the upper is without pain, it to has a full party hitting attack with "Death, death, death", so for the love of god, keep yourself healed!

Ozzie leaves before the fight begins, and the Commander doesn't have any extra rewards for you, so let's head to the new town we can now get to that we couldn't before (even on our first visit, the way way was blocked). There are, in fact, two towns we can go to. Domino isn't much, but in Porre, we get to hear about a little kid named Tata that supposedly bears the Hero's Badge, marking him as a hero of legend. Now, bear in mind that Goku and company are 16 at the most, but we've already put down monsters the size of tanks, so hey, maybe Tata can help us out.

Also, the market has Porran Berets for your ladies and Golden Suits for all. I prefer Taban's Vest for Bulma, but buy upgrades as you see fit.

We can also head to the Cursed Woods in the west, and here we have a game mechanic that barely gets mentioned-sometimes, monsters will fight monsters. If you hit the snakes, they'll eat the frogs (their in game name is "edible frogs", by the way) in order to heal. They're lined up so Goku's Slash or Cyclone can hit 'em both.

RlrJ78D.png

Heading all the way to the end and slipping into the secret passage under the bush (which is not super obvious at first) allows us to meet up with Ginyu again! However, when we tell him the King is wounded, he gets quiet and asks us to leave.

Well, with nothing else to do, we are hearing talk of a legendary blade in the Mountains, so I guess we'll have to go there. Word is Tata's heading out to get it to, so we need to do some climbing.

XiwXd9W.png

Monsters with bells, and monsters that are asleep. This'll go well.

AiGSOHN.png

The sleeping monsters are called Ogans, and when they have hammers, they're a nightmare, but the hammers can be burned with fire magic and they lose all their high defense stats. That boy is Tata, who ran away from a single Ogan without a hammer, and without the hammer, Goku can one shot them without a crit.

So, when danger reared its ugly head, Tata bravely turned his tail and fled, brave brave brave brave brave bold Sir Tata. We fight both the one chasing him and one with a hammer, to give us a showcase of this new enemy.

Most of the mountains is a pretty simple dungeon walk, against either Ogans (with hammers or without) or Freelancers, which are ninja birds that counter EVERYTHING but die pretty quick. The mountain isn't the test however...it's the fight at the end that is.

fP2cr3K.png

The Peak, however, is an annoying series of four battles with no breaks inbetween. Hope you weren't hurting for HP before!

NyfsD7A.png

In the cave at the end, we find the Masamune...and the creatures Masa, and Mune. They turn into monsters and attack us.

iUQy3pr.png

Masa has the green scarf, Mune has the purple scarf. Attacking Masa prompts a retaliatory "X-Strike", similar to what Goku and Ginyu combine to perform. Attacking Mune results in no counter attack. I recommend beating the shit out of Mune! They will occasionally combine to do some weird tornado attack that'll confuse the target, if you have extra Ambrosia you can use it to cure them, but you can also just wait and let one of the brothers attack the confused character and let them snap out normally.

MEIBw6y.png

After the first part of the fight, they combine into Masamune, and fight us again with no healing break inbetween. He has 3,600 HP, decent defense, and hits like a train. There's only one trick to this, and in the original SNES translation, the hint the game feels forced to give you is next to useless-when he begins to store Wind energy, Goku's Wind Slash somehow negates the nasty "hit everyone for triple digit damage" attack. How? Why? I DON'T KNOW! But you'll need to brutalize the ever loving shit out of him for this fight. No tricks aside from the Slash, nothing but a brutal battle against a high powered boss.

After the battle, the brothers wonder if we'll fix them. Well...we kinda have to now. What use is a broken sword?

Jaimas you are invited to shut the fuck up about the Lepers in Darkest Dungeon, I can already hear you typing.

gbjHE8F.png

So what you're telling me is...that Ginyu is the legendary hero? Shock, gasp, someone who's already competent actually carried this thing? Who'd have thought?

xC0u3UG.png

Speaking of Ginyu, he continues to angst even though we now have the Hero's Badge and half the Masamune. The other half? In the chest we couldn't get to earlier. I have a feeling Ginyu wanted us to find it, why else would he have moved out of the way? Bulma even reads a name on the hilt, M-E-L-C-oh fuck it, it's Melchior. Didn't we meet him? Ginyu says none alive can mend the Masamune, but that's where he's wrong and we're gonna prove it.

Will Goku and friends mend the Masamune? Is the Melchior we know the same as the one who engraved those letters? And will Ginyu ever snap out of his angst funk? Find out next time, on Chrono Trigger Kai!

If this game has one flaw, it's that it doesn't make backtracking all that easy. In order to get to Melchior, we have to go to Truce Canyon, which is a LONG walk from Ginyu's neck of the woods, go through Truce Canyon and get jumped by at least one battle, enter the gate and go to End of Time, get the Medina Village gate with optional health recovery, and then head to Melchior's cabin after coming out of the closet again.

iduJ9DQ.png

Melchior is suitably amazed that we picked up a sword with his name on it, and tells us his story as a new track we won't hear for quite some time plays.

Song: Corridors of Time
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5uzOzk4U9g

Actually he doesn't tell us his story because Bulma jumps the gun and asks if he can reforge it. He says he needs Dreamstone, which came from a long long long long long time ago...but we can go there!

vtBzbTH.png

65 million BC is one of the gates we have access to, and we immediately get jumped by these guys on arrival. Goku's lightning fucks them up but unless you grind the shit out of your Tech Points (get them after winning fights, they're used to learn new "techs") you won't have Lightning 2 which wipes the field. Still useful to blast them with it. They're not too difficult but they do have a nasty sleep gas pellet which puts its targets to sleep.

After the fight, 8 more of them show up, and despite us kicking the asses of the last 5, we're outnumbered and our party has no idea what to do, until...

A cavewoman with a monkey tail and a big fucking club shows up to kill them all. Only in game, she doesn't have a club, she has FISTS OF FURY! Meet Ayla, and as there are no big-titted cavewomen in Dragonball, I decide not to rename her. Mosco was stretching it already.

Ayla knocks the 8 down to a much more easily handled 4, and then introduces herself by uh...

xj3llrz.png

I am fairly certain that is death by snu-snu. She announces that she likes Goku because Goku is strong, then after some comments from the ladies, Ayla announces she likes strong people period, causing Bulma to try and hastily explain that she is not a lesbian. She then invites us to the village for a party.

Basically, Ayla doesn't do anything half way. She will fight dinosaurs with her bare hands and then drink you under the table.

She leads us to the Ioka Village, where one of the NPCs happily inform us that the Chief has a shiny red stone. Let me spoil it, yes, it's the Dreamstone we're hunting for.

LJgYGSV.png

Once we meet up with Ayla at the Chief's hut, she brings us to a nighttime party full of dancing, food, and drinking. In fact, we have to win at a drinking contest to get the Dreamstone from her, which requires us to mash the A button as fast as we can-but if you lose three times, Ayla says she's full and we win by default.

Also, despite all indicators of this being a cutscene, we actually have full control of Goku. After faffing about in the party (seems this game likes parties), Ayla invites us to try "skull smash", a drink that makes your skull feel like it's smashed the next day. Why yes, it is early alcohol!

By the way, most alcoholic references were scrubbed in the SNES release, to where most taverns served "soda" and Ayla had us at a soup eating contest. The DS remake does not fucking care.

Ayla also tells us about the "reptites", the sort of dinosaur monsters we've been fighting. Their leader is named Azula and wants to wipe humans out. So the people of Ioba fight, and the people of another village named Laruba hide away. Which one is best? Well, seeing as how humans are dominant in the future, me thinks Ayla's fighting won.

Once we get the Dreamstone from winning the drinking contest, we pass out and wake up the next day. Everyone has a hangover, but Goku is mute and doesn't express it.

kTXszED.png

And all these footprints! I don't know who proclaims it lost if Bulma isn't in the party. We awaken Ayla, who comes with us to find the Reptite thief. I decide to bring Mosco because, why not?

Don't ask how we can somehow swap party members without the Gate Key.

xQ8pHGm.png

Also don't ask how 65 MILLION BC has guns and robot arms. This is part of a little mini-mechanic where bringing the guy in the center 3 each of various things will give us a weapon or armor. These items drop from the enemies here in 65 million BC.

So with that, I'm heading out to get some new weapons.

Will Goku and friends find the thief? Will they be able to repair the Masamune? And just how strong is Ayla? Find out next time, on Chrono Trigger Kai!

Murder Nu for material.

Material for weapon.

Sell weapon for money.

I was actually about to bring that up in a minor "side-update" about the Hunting Grounds. The Hunting Grounds is an optional area, and has a ton of monsters packing a ton of the "trade loot" I've mentioned. The Hunting Grounds also gets rained on, and when it rains, a "Nu" enemy appears in one of three locations. Fight and kill him to get three of each material, as well as a "third eye" accessory that doubles evasion and, if the guide I'm looking at is accurate, also gives a +10 Hit Rate, making it ideal for either Nadia or Bulma.

So, Ayla then. She's pretty kickass. High strength, more speed then Chrono, and her first tech is a healing tech called "Kiss". Also because I forgot it last time:

A very helpful kid in one of the huts says she saw Reptites heading south to the Forest Maze. Heading there has us meet with Kino, who is Ayla's second in command, and he(?) is also the one who ACTUALLY took our Gate Key, the little cunt. Ayla punches him and scolds him like a child, because even in 65 million BC, stealing is wrong!

3CuP48c.png

Kino sends us through the forest to find the reptites who took the Key from him (so in a roundabout way, Ayla was right to accuse them). The "Maze" is less of a maze and more of a really windy and bendy corridor. It's even less of a maze with the map on the bottom screen, but even in the SNES version I don't remember having any trouble with it, mostly because the footprints will guide you through it.

The Ruby Vests are very useful against the Golden Eaglet enemies who turn into Red Eaglets when they take enough damage, and the Red ones counter most attacks with a fire attack while also having jacked up defense.

v8Bi4tP.png

The Reptite Lair, which is on the other side of the Maze, is actually a maze, one of tunnels and holes made by the Arch-Weevil enemies. The sound of them drilling is literally the most annoying thing ever.

Do yourself a favor, any enemies with "-saur" in their names or that even look remotely like a dinosaur, hit them with Lightning. Here we start to find Megasaurs, dino enemies with tons of HP and defense and a nasty counter attack. Lightning lowers the defense and stops the counters.

There's probably some tricks to getting the best stuff out of the maze, but I just went down a couple holes and it seemed to work out, so, hey! All good. After the second hole you have to fight through a bunch of Reptites, then get through a difficult enemy corridor, at the end of which a save point bursts into existence. In the next room, we meet...

HELjjXb.png

...Azala, wondering how the hell we made the Gate Key. Spoilers, it's cause we're from the future!

Tyrano's Lair https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A11eWGIasMY kicks up as we prepare to face her. And yes, Azala is a woman, despite us having no way of telling cause they all look alike to us.

You can tell her about the gate key, but I ain't telling her that shit. Regardless of answer, she summons Nizbel to kick our asses.

EFf9ApJ.png

Meet Nizbel. Like other Dinosaurs, he has a gigantic defense, and like them, Lightning lowers it. He also seems to be stunned by it, as he doesn't use his regular attacks after you hit him with lightning. After some time, he'll use Electrical Discharge to hit our whole party and remove the defense debuff, so re-buff him when he does it. Other then that, stay alive and keep the pain train rolling, he'll go down.

RxSYpyJ.png

Azala bows out and returns our gate key, deciding to just make a run for it since we did just take down a dino twice her size. But we'll see her again. After all, there's a Tyrano Lair, why else would we have a theme for it?

Ayla, for some reason (either hangover or as some autistic fan theories say, pregnancy) pukes after the return of the key. We are then teleported to the Chief's hut and bid our goodbyes. Now, Forward to the Present!

LZQJSz8.png

Bring the Dreamstone to Melchior, and the process of reforging it begins. All while Corridors of Time plays. Bulma (and perhaps Mosco if you don't bring her, but every party you can make right now will include one of the two people who could potentially assist Melchior) refines the Dreamstone, Melchior works the sword, and soon it is repaired.

EYxCvz1.png

In the original Japanese version, it was called the "Grandleon", a name that fits the Western longsword blade a lot better. Regardless, the sword is fixed, and we're one step closer to taking on Magus.

Will Ginyu take up the mantle of the legendary hero? Will our heroes manage to conquer Magus's Castle? And will we ever discover the truth of Melchior's past? Find out next time, on Chrono Trigger Kai!
