In just a short recent memory trip, it was occupied by the Mamelukes, then the Ottomans, and then the British. It was a self-ruling homeland for the almost 2000 years in the same way that Scotland has been free and independent the last 300, spoiler it hasn't. Hell, the last independent states there were Jewish (Hasmonean dynasty and the following Herodian client state) if you discount the Crusader States.

Unfortunately for the Canaanites, the territory itself has awful geographic defenses, hence why it was conquered so frequently throughout history. At that point you either become a trader nation(Phoenicians) or a warrior one bent on genocide(Ancient Israel), otherwise you're fucked - assimilated and destroyed.

To give a non-Levantine example - Armenians turned from a warrior-nation to a merchant one.

Since the current Israel are technically invaders of Canaan, they have an advantage from a historical vantage point. They're basically the philistines from the Iron Age who conquered Canaan or at least parts of it.

Well, lets play devil's advocate. What would have happened had a group that purports to represent the Palestinians made a peace agreement with Israel, having Israelis cede land, funds and concessions for a Palestinian state in 2005?

Keep in mind such a deal would not have prevented any Palestinian government from peacefully seeking resolution of any land disputes.

I will tell you what would have happened. In this new country of Palestine, everyone would have had their hand out, groups would have formed to oppose every single aspect of any deal, steal anything they could get their hands on and sooner rather than later a dictator or junta would have taken over, to the relief of the average person and they all would be as miserable and poor as ever.

You see, it's because of those perfidious Jews that Palestine is a train wreck and suddenly Fatah/Hamas 2.0 would be conscripting thousands of inbred and illiterate boys to wage jihad to get what the Yehudi dogs had stolen from them and we're right back where we started.
