Yeah well to be fair, Saddam thought that his Republican Guard, while actually pretty good and gave the US Military a serious challenge, would be enough to repel the US Military from Iraq in a conventional matter. It wasn't because Iraq is a flat desert. Meaning it is super fucking hard to defend that shit and really easy to invade. If Saddam was in Afghanistan or another mountainous country then maybe he'd have a good point since the Republican Guard could easily become Guerrillas. Gaza is one of the most densely populated areas of the world and Hamas is pretty good at Urban Insurgency. I first read about khat (or qat) when reading ‘All the trouble in the world’ by P.J. O’Rourke back in the early 90’s when he was reporting on the Somali famine.

I used to chew qat on an almost daily basis when I was in Yemen. The entire country was hooked on the stuff - men and women. It greased the wheels of society. If you wanted to get anything done, then it usually came down to sitting around with a group of men with great wodges of qat balled up in one cheek, quietly discussing a variety of topics, becoming more and more chatty until, one by one, they sank into a torpid state. A person who is high on qat appears to have completely shut down mentally. Internally the mind is moving so fast that it transitions beyond words, like a spinning top whose colours fade into a white blur.

It Yemen, the qat used to arrive in the afternoon. In the larger settlements it could be purchased in different grades. The top quality qat was expensive even by western standards. The run-off from the cheap stuff was very hard on the throat. Fuck knows what they sprayed on it.

This might have changed now, but, when I was in the country, people travelled between the towns in shared taxis. These were white Peugeot estates with the driver and passengers seats removed and replaced with a bench seat, so they could accommodate more passengers. It impressed me that, while qat was often purchased on the journey nobody chewed it until after we reached our destination.

EDIT - I was travelling to one of the villages outside Sana'a to buy a few things. The man who I had paid to translate for me pointed out a house-sized boulder by the side of the road and informed me that it had been completely hollowed out.

"Why?" I asked him.

He thought about my question for a few seconds and then replied "qat" as if that single word explained everything.
