Code Vein

Is there any decent bayonet builds? I've kinda gone on a hiatus playing this after seeing the Dyaus Pita I was using a double bayonet build with the Riot Breaker and Brodiaea. I plan on getting back into it and at least finishing the game.

Ever since the buff to the exclusive gun skill, bayonets now have the potential to really wreck house by just spamming it. Considering your current progress, and assuming you have collected all the vestiges in the Crown of Sands...

Blood Code: Harmonia
Blood Veil: Any relatively light armor that gives you the highest Dark Gift rating possible.

Passives:
  • Swift Destruction - obtained from Hephaestus
  • Weapon Drain Rating Up - obtained from Caster
  • Bayonet Mastery - obtained from Artemis
  • Strength/Dexterity Up - obtained from Prometheus (note: you only need DEX+ to hold Brodiaea. You can exclusively carry the latter and use Dexterity/Willpower Up to eke out a little more damage.
Actives:
  • Fusillade Rondo - obtained from Artemis
  • Ranged Impact - obtained from Hunter
  • Bloodsucking Blades - obtained from Artemis
  • Overdrive - obtained from Assassin
  • Restorative Offering is optional
Always maintain Ranged Impact, Overdrive, and Bloodsucking Blades. Thanks to your high Dark rating, you will recover more than 1 ichor per melee swing. Then spam Fusillade Rondo from a distance as much as the cooldown will let you. That's literally all you need to be hideously effective. Those slots left empty can be filled with whatever you like. Defensive skills, offensive magic, anything to improve QOL.

So there isn't a better option when it comes to bayonets? Just for the sake of maximizing my stats.

You'd have to get Eva's personal gun, Libertador, to do the highest amount of damage possible with any bayonet. Brodiaea is the second best option, and I prefer it due to the simpler moveset and light weight. My bayonet build uses a blood code you can only get from beating the game, and has enough stats to fit in all three main active attack buffs for the greatest melee and bullet damage potential (though only Adrenaline affects the latter, and only by 10%).

Also, people don't really care about increasing stats with passives beyond what will allow them to use their desired skills and weapons. Increasing anything further will net you about a couple hundred extra points in damage at best. They care more about obtaining Quick mobility so Swift Destruction can add a 20% damage boost to all attacks.

Is it safe to say that the Blade Bearer and Cannoneer are this game's equivalent of Ornstein and Smough? I've been trying to focus on the Blade Bearer but they keep curb-stomping me regardless of my strategy. The furthest I've gotten is knocking the Blade Bearer down to about half her health. Should I buy a Blood Veil that's resistant to fire and ice?

Pretty much, yeah. Those two and what comes next are the game's true final boss, IMO.

Unfortunately there's not really a hard and fast technique. Up your elemental resistance and learn the tells - just remember the Dancer is a right cunt and can charge her, uh, charge ability while aiming at your companion but then unleash the actual attack on you even if you're halfway across the arena.

I had more success baiting the Dancer away and Grinding her down, with o e eye kept on the other guy. Ol' fat ass was easier to read, and easier to dodge.

Congrats. You've found the most popular boss to be summoned against.

@Catgirl IRL mentioned that the easiest way to go against them is to up your elemental resistance; it's veeery easy to do in this game (transform a Blood Veil for fire or ice resistance, use elemental resistance buffs, etc.), and can completely cancel out any damage to their attacks once you max it out to 100. You'll still get knocked around like a pinball, but your health won't drop a smidge.

Of course, I recommend every Code Vein player to beat this boss duo at least once solo without relying on elemental resistances for the true experience. The adrenaline rush after I did so nearly took me off my feet.

This time with Photo Mode, I tried challenging myself by using the trusty partners as subjects. I already had Io up and running, so I decided to start with her - interestingly, she prioritizes towards inducing knockback with her wide halberd swings. Even when she's using Chariot Rush, she would cancel after the opening thrust into a spin attack.

Let's get to the elephant in the room; her little dress just doesn't have the capacity to hide anything at all. Not that I'm complaining, but I'm trying to be creative here. For her in particular, I've added the extra stipulation of no panty shots.

If you still need help, I powered through using Yakumo’s sword and having Yakumo in the party. I also enchanted my sword with fire and beat the Blade Bearer pretty easily with it. I imagine you could use an ice enchanting gift buff to beat Cannoneer but I had no difficulty without it.
Sometimes you have to get rid of fancy magic or evasion or parrying and solely rely on a DickSword

I did almost everything you guys suggested but still kept getting my ass kicked, so I ended up summoning another player and that finally did it. (I was able to kill the Blade Bearer a couple times but my partner died soon after.) Oddly enough, they focused on taking the Cannoneer down first. Not that I’m complaining since it got the job done.

I can already tell Mido is going to be a pain after barely lasting a minute against him my first try. Ah well.

What level are you? I beat him at lv 99
Also, DickSword is simple to learn, impossible to master. Take the Yakumo bloodcode, put passives that enhance strength/two-hand mastery, equip Yakumo’s weapon with at least +6 weapon enhancement (also transform weapon with the gem Yakumo can give you), and have Yakumo in your party. You will start hitting 1000+ per hit.
Also have items or gifts that cure inhibit

105 I think? But I'm also going into this blind so it could just be that I suck.

He’s an annoying boss if you rely on gifts or special attacks. I mainly stuck with the buff from Yakumo that increases chance to stagger enemies and Adrenaline. Both of which can be used before entering the fight.

Keep an item prepared to cure yourself. If you get downed and have the debuff, your teammate wont be able to revive you.

Learn to stay behind him as much as possible. He’s more than happy to engage in extended attack chains, but will stop midway if you roll through his sword swings. Even if you are behind him though, get used to dodging every time he attacks; his hitboxes are wide enough for him to still clip you.

Also, when he engages in his 2nd Phase, never dodge backwards or to the side. You’re going to get more than half your health deleted for your troubles.

Man, I need to get back into this game, I've been feeling a little under the weather for the past week or so and I haven't really felt like playing this game that much as a result. I gots me some grinding to do so my stupid immune system had better throw this bug already.

Double-posting ahoy.

So the Sealed Depths, or Part 1 of the DLC, have been released. Not going to go into detail since I'd just realized it was already out. There's not much to say about the new map itself anyway - it's basically a Depths level with a larger map and slightly better design. One should be able to finish exploring the area in well under an hour. The way enemy encounters go is kind of interesting (and not a single Invasion event in sight), but the real meat of the content is literally a walk away from the starting Mistle.
The new boss is fascinating.

So is the DLC just a new boss and depth map? That seems...stingy.
Unfortunately, yes. There’s some interesting stuff, but it’s probably not worth the price of admission (unless you go by the metric of alternate skins, as Io and Louis get some new outfits). I got the season pass, so this doesn’t bother me nearly as much, but there are definitely better ways to spend $10.

I’ll be doing a full write-up on the Part 1 DLC tonight. Got pics and everything.

I'm mostly over that cold I caught so I just got some grinding done a little while ago, got another blood code fully completed and with all the haze I got from the burning city area I've unlocked more skills to grind up. I also want to say that doing the Burning City without the survivor code unlocked is sheer and pure suffering, don't be a dumbfuck like me kids. Get the survivor code skills set up and grind them up while you're at it. You'll thank me later for this bit of advice.

I got... distracted.

First things first, congrats on the game for selling one million copies. Knew it could do it.
Code-Vein-Sells-Over-a-Million-Units.jpg

What a cute Mia.

We will also be getting a God Eater collaboration soon (the series the dev studio was known for) to celebrate its 10th anniversary, and with it some content that was initially for pre-order folks only.

I'm the type to front-load the bad, so let's get this out of the way - Is the Part 1 DLC worth $9.99? Meh, probably not. While there is definitely new content, it's very barebones compared to what you might expect out of any souls-like game. You thought Ashes of Ariandel was somewhat overpriced for what you got? Well, it might as well be The Old Hunters in both scope and variety compared to what this gives you. The new level, as I've mentioned before, is just a Depths layout spread over a larger area. There's no new theme music and no new mobs, with the only exception possibly being a miniboss that can shift phases between magic and melee, and even then it's just alternating between two giant ant soldier models (granted, it has been given an entirely unique moveset, but it wasn't fun to fight against. Just confusing). The new Blood Veils and weapons, 3 and 4 respectively, are reskins of pre-existing equipment. The added Blood Codes are too niche to replace what already works, with one being content-locked so you must get Part 2 and 3 to complete it. The Horror Hunting Trials reek of padding, as it requires you to face the main boss multiple times in order to unlock everything. Overall, it's quite disappointing when you consider how long this had been delayed for. I won't be surprised if Parts 2 and 3 will be similarly meager.

Alright, veggies eaten. So about that Hellfire Knight the game is so excited to show us...
20200202012401_1.jpg

...he's honestly a really fun boss to fight against. For those who don't know (I didn't), it's an armored variant of the Hannibal Aragami from God Eater with greatly improved animations all around. It's an aggressive bastard too, packing maneuvers that reach across the arena and necessitating intense stamina managment due to its insane attack frequency. Yet, its moveset is cool to witness and is surprisingly lacking in the bullshit department, save for a homing fire spell which the arena gives plenty of room to avoid. Once you get him down to half-health, it's practically a battle in the middle of a burning fireworks factory. And if you're the masochistic type who thinks the base level (which is already scaled towards NG+) is too much of a yawn, you can freely jack the difficulty up to a maximum value of 10. Seems daunting, but you get plenty of practice; you have to beat it multiple times anyway, going through each fight with a different weapon (sword, greatsword, hammer... and the pipe) in order to earn the new weapons. They're just glowing reskins, but the stats are interesting enough to warrant a look.
20200202140039_1.jpg20200202142811_1.jpg20200202151143_1.jpg
Using the charge attack for each grants a temporary fire buff that can actually stack on top of other elemental buffs without being replaced, but that's not what makes them strange; the truly weird thing about them is that the sword is pure STR, and the greatsword and hammer are pure DEX. What the hell? Unfortunately, that means there isn't a lot of support for the latter two, because everyone knows Dexterity builds are for plebs (but really it's because Dexterity-based codes were obviously not made with fat-rollers in mind; hopefully that changes in the future). The sword on the other hand benefits greatly from being relatively lightweight, with many Strength-based builds suddenly open to the possibility of playing speedsters instead of tanks. As far as new content goes, this is a pretty significant addition.

The weapons aren't the only ones getting a reskin though...
20200202014333_1.jpg20200202001749_1.jpg
Louis and Io are given two new outfits each, which can be earned after beating the Hellfire Knight with them as partners.
20200202134746_1.jpg20200202010011_1.jpg
The Dark versions... my god Louis, you look even more ridiculous than I could have imagined. They're both absolutely precious.
20200202134835_1.jpg20200202005906_1.jpg
The Formal versions (with a total of 3 color palettes to choose from) has Louis dressed in what suspiciously looks like a Gestapo jacket and glasses, while Io is wearing some eccentric mix between a dance costume, a leather brassiere, and a babydoll. Impossibly, the hem of her new skirt is even worse at concealing her underwear than her original one. Godspeed Shift, you horny bastards.

While the new Blood Codes are too narrowly focused to be useful in a general sense, there are still some really interesting skills that can easily find use in other builds. For example, the two new fire spells are, to put it bluntly, vile. It's crazy how much damage they can put out, to the point where I fear they'll end up being nerfed like the Barrage spells. Please don't do it, I was finally having fun for once with the Pyromancy class, after all these years!
20200206224610_1.jpg20200206221549_1.jpg
So yeah, that's all I have to say about Part 1. Part 2 will come later this February, with Part 3 arriving on March. Hopefully this will be of use to anyone considering whether or not to invest in this expansion. While I am disappointed with what it offered, I'm still pretty optimistic for the future; Shift apparently has a good track record with DLC when it came to the God Eater series, so I have faith that they will come up with something that will truly be worth every penny.

Felt like I was going to collapse from a heart attack during the home stretch. And it still hits like a wet noodle. Truly, an item solely for bragging rights.
