I think this thread was a needful sir. Although it's a little shallow because cohost is indeed less popular mastodon alternative.
In fact I would say that the lack of twitter defining features (character limit and likes) makes cohost look more like it's owners are more like tumblr diaspora and tumblr being their main inspiration. CSS for post reminds me too much of tumblr profile customization.
Cohost is being developed by three fags who call themselves "Anti Software Software Club". (obviously a nod to the clothing brand)
ASSC is claiming to be proudly 100% worker owned, "non-for-profit" which could be misleading as non-profit, they're not. Cohost profits directly from their donation and future planned subscription model, also buy the merch plz.
Obviously being a leftie worker owned company, they must have a manifesto, from which I literally understood nothing about anything.
I read their ToS and Privacy Policy and it doesnt seem too much different from other tech social media, there aren't really any guarantees for them to NOT track you and NOT sell your data.
All three of them are permanently stuck on twitter weirdos, for which I must say, even mastodon developers have more faith in their platform then these fucks.
Not only that but they proudly put their twitter accounts fairly visibly in cohost.org footer, especially outrageous being ASSC website which doesn't even include links to their cohost profiles, only twitter ones.
They all explain their usage of twitter despite of owning their own platform some copious explanation that cohost is a long-form factormicroblogging website, and that short posts belong on twitter.
If someone wants some homework I would say looking into their past employment history would be great, they all claim to "all left jobs at conventional tech companies to build cohost", which looking at how the website looks, might be quite an over-estimate.
Additionally this is might be me missremembering, but I thought cohost was always invite-only, they only seem to open it up recently.
