The real purpose of Columbus Day is, and always was, "Italian-American Pride Day". Let's just rename it Giuseppe Garibaldi Day or something along those lines.

The three day weekend for Columbus Day should just be moved over to Halloween. Literally everybody can get behind that. I don’t get how this hasn’t happened yet.

The day shouldn't be renamed or else it's going to eventually end up starting a slippery slope where anything at all named after Columbus has to also be renamed. We've already seen it with the proposals for DC statehood under the name "Douglass Commonwealth" to replace District of Columbia. I'm surprised there haven't been big movements to rename Columbia University or even the nation of Colombia yet. It's just too much of a shitshow and the people who are trusted with renaming "problematic" things in 2021 never come up with anything good to replace them with.

This is what I say to people all the time when shit like this comes up. You let them take away one thing and they'll take ten others. It's not so much of a slippery slope but a death by a thousand cuts. "Its just ONE day we want to rename! Columbus was a cunt anyways, fuck him!" and then "Its just ONE religious holiday! God dosn't even exist anyways, fuck him!" and then it will be "Its just ONE country we want to rename, the United States of America is bigoted anyways, fuck them!" Remember, its only ever just ONE thing. It's obvious what their motivations are when the thing they want to change causes no measurable harm, they just want to have power over others.
