So I'm not touching convergence in the slightest. Am I missing anything

It's just after futures end I'm getting out of event comics

Anyone else been checking out Secret Wars? I'm honestly pretty surprised how good the majority of it is. Lot of really interesting, entertaining stuff in in the tie-ins. Really digging the more fantasy-ish vibe a lot of them are going for, too.

As someone who grew-up with Jem and the Holograms, I've been really enjoying the comic book reboot. Even though the artist is an SJW, unlike Squirrel Girl's artist, the characters look appealing and the expressions are fun. You can tell the people behind it are fans.

I really like Sophie Campbell's art. Very expressive and stylized in an appealing way- her stuff on the recent Glory reboot was pretty good, aside from a few derpy expressions here and there.

Hell, in general, the majority of what I've read from the Awesome Comics reboot was pretty good. Except Larsen's Supreme, but honestly I'm not much of a Larsen fan anyway and Alan Moore's Supreme isn't something that can easily be topped.

I'm a big fan of comics of all kinds. While I am a fan of the standard superhero comics, I also have an appreciation for graphic novels, manga and belgian comics. My favorite comic is probably Tintin, followed by Astro Boy.

DCyou has actually been fun and worth reading. Books I reccomend

Continuing books

Action comics
Batman
Batman/Superman
Justice League
Superman
Superman/Wonder Woman

New Books.

Doctor Fate
Bizzaro
Bat-Mite
Martian Manhunter
Robin Son of Batman

ones to avoid

Batman Beyond. (don't give DC money for a book which is just a fuck you to those who read Futures End
Green Lantern Books. (sinestro pretty good. but the other two are just kind of dull. Lost army has promise but green lantern meh

European comics have some of the best comic art I've seen, and I highly recommend these titles if you're looking for serious eye candy to drool over:

Arthur de Pins just does gorgeous lineless art, and is a huge inspiration for me in general.

I really love Big Man Plans, it's like reading the best Garth Ennis has to offer for the first time, minus all the conservative moralising.

They finally brought in that buzzed about Archie reboot. (A fresh perspective was sorely needed for the series.) After reading the first issue, it's pretty good. It was a neat idea to start Archie and Betty as couple who just broke-up (but still care about each other) and are now a subject to massive school rumor over a "lipstick incident." Since Veronica won't be introduced until probably the next issue (she'll be the new girl in school), it all adds a new dynamic to the famous love triangle.

Last one I read was Leviathan:

I thought the set up for the story (biggest ship in the world, lost at sea for years, can't find land, ship turns into dystopian nightmare) was amazing. Was a little let down by where they took it if I'm honest, but it was a good afternoon read.

Anyone else ever read Marvel Zombies? I picked up all three complete collections and it has this weird quality scale. MZ1 is amazing in every way. 2 is meh, and just retreads too much. 3 is the best because it has Machine Man being a badass zombie killer. 4 is bland, with a bunch of supernatural characters and a zombie Deadpool head. And 5 is the worst thing I've read, with the last issue being a "fuck you" to the writer's critics. After that there are too many spinoffs, none being good. (Didn't read the one with Ash.)

Not a huge comic book reader. I read the big Batman, Superman, and Justice League stories growing up as they got published in collections and my library picked them up (Long Halloween, Whatever Happened to etc, Hush, Death of Supes, etc). After the New 52 started up, I decided to take advantage of it and keep up with them monthly...and promptly failed. Working my way through Batman Eternal now, catching up. I know Batman and Superman are pretty vanilla as far as comic books go, but as I said, I've never been a big reader of the genre and I just like those two heroes.

Since the Marvel movies I've been trying to get into Marvel comics but I just don't really know where to start or what to follow.

I prefer DC a lot more, Booster Gold is my favorite hero, but if you're gonna get into Marvel you should wait until Secret Wars is over and get into the All-New Marvel universe. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-New,_All-Different_Marvel

Great comic I read recently was Orbiter.
Orbiter_tpb_cover.jpg

A space shuttle returns to earth after a mysterious failure with strange new technology onboard, and one survivor who refuses to speak to anyone. A team of former space scientists who have all moved on because the space program has been disbanded have to figure out what happened.

It was co-written by Warren Ellis, who's one of my favourite authors. It actually reminds me of Interstellar a little bit.

Was five the one with Howard the duck or was that another spin off ?

I love the works of Carlos Trillo and Carlos Meglia. They created Cybersix. Unfortunately it's not in English so I have to go here to read some of it. I try to get as much of their stuff that's translated into English as I can.
Weird it was never done professionally, let alone up in Canada if they thought they could sneak this onto book shelves during the time the show was on the air.

So, I just noticed that this thread is mostly superheroes. Time to rectify that. Here's some other great non-superhero comic artists I enjoy:

Harvey Kurtzman - The man who gave us MAD Magazine and one of the finest satirists of his era. This is one of his best stories, though he didn't do the art:

If you want to see his art, look up his "Hey Look!" comics.

Robert Armstrong - a fine artist and musician, a fairly underrated talent, and an all-around great guy. He's the man who coined the term "couch potato," if you can believe it. Here's some of his comic work:

Kim Deitch - son of Gene. His graphic novels are all truly, truly good stuff; they focus on periods in history he enjoys (early 30s animation, silent movies) and they're hard to put down once you read them. This is one of his earlier stories, unrelated to his graphic novel work: http://dochermes.livejournal.com/530182.html

George Herriman - one of the greatest comic strip artists who ever lived. If you've never seen Krazy Kat, do it now; you'll be amazed that people could do great art like that within the confines of a newspaper comic. His illustrations for Don Marquis' Archy and Mehitabel stories are good too.

And, as you've probably guessed by my avatar, Robert Crumb. I own a book filled with pictures of every album cover he ever drew - needless to say, they're evidence that album covers can be art.

I first learned of him because my mom picked up an issue of "Comics Scene" about 25 years ago that had an article on him (let alone stating his name on the front cover which is why my mom noticed it in the first place, thinking he could be related to me (her maiden name was Kurtzman, but I've never tracked down any possible ties though she thought I had his artistic integrity, though I'm sure she never read any of his work).

This is one of his best stories, though he didn't do the art:

Will Elder was his go-to guy during those days.

If you want to see his art, look up his "Hey Look!" comics.
I wanted to link to the adaptation of this that aired on Nickelodeon's "Oh Yeah! Cartoons" but sadly that isn't up on YouTube anymore, oh well.

He certainly knows his craft!

There's actually more to this footage but can't find it online, but he showed off the CD covers for Beyonce and Mudhoney and wondered why they were award-winning (I have that footage privately).

By the way, Kim's father just had his 91st birthday yesterday! Just thought you'd like to know!
