Quick roundup:
EDIT: Reuploaded because Meyer privated it.
Richard's old argument, consisting of totaling up all the days of all his campaigns and dividing it among the number of campaigns he's launched, in other words taking one large book that everyone's been waiting two years for and mixing it with a number of week-long overstock clearance sales of already created material then saying "ackshually my
average is 3.6 months", was too stupid an argument even for diehard Zack fans to not see through. Now he's pivoting towards a new position, claiming that "late" and "on time" are just mental constructs, figments of the mind that aren't even real. lol
Nerdette's Newsstand apparently took a swing at
Perch Comics a couple of weeks ago, disagreeing with Perch's argument that "Gatekeeping isn't real", an argument Perch makes despite being unable to name any public figures within an entire industry that are politically right-of-center. As always, pointing out how dumb this argument is only met with bitter vaguebooking from Perch about the people "forcing him to take sides". Gatekeeping, according to Perch, doesn't exist "because customers are free to purchase whatever books they want" (so long as they're approved by the appropriate publishers, distributors and retailers). Again, any objections to this are simply the words of a partisan who cannot accept an objective, neutral opinion.
Nerdette is one of those people it seems, and lays out her argument that gatekeeping does exist as follows: 1) comics are going up in price, which to Nerdette is a form of gatekeeping because it prices out people not wanting to pay $4.99 for non-Bendis Superman. 2) "Old" people get kicked out, like Chuck Dixon and John Byrne which is a form of ageist gatekeeping. 3) Conservative gatekeeping, which Nerdette mumbles something along the lines of "i gotts say it but you know" to move on to the worst form of gatekeeping of all: 4) Gatekeeping by fans who want politics out of their comics. These fans, according to Nerdette, simply don't realize that the overton window has shifted over the past 5 years and that making Superman and Robin gay is simply the new normal apolitical content and that any objections to this are a form of gatekeeping. So yes Perch, gatekeeping in comics does exist.
Definitely a lot to think about from this meeting of the minds.
Vito Gesualdi posted a link to sign the mailing list for his own independent comic
Super Killer, appearing to confirm that he actually intends to create his own comic (which I doubted).
Micah put out video here weighing in on the IndieVolt scandal and how the introduction of such bad actors justifies the presence of gatekeepers. That a year after the Oz Show #54 Micah still thinks that he'd be on the inside of any gatekeeping organization is... fairly amazing.
