Maybe they're just annoyed by the blatant false advertising in that tag line. Selling Comics? Come on, Marvel, I've seen your sales numbers...I dont see the problem with this new tagline, any guesses why they think its bad? (I'm genuinely curious)

I'm fine with slice of life comics, since manga seems to have a decent number of those, and there are numerous webcomics that have that sort of thing. The problem is where we live, they're pretty niche, so having massive print runs, especially one that store owners are compelled to stock them regardless of how poorly they sell, is going to be disastrous for the store owners under contract.
If they want to make limited run slice of life stuff, that would be fine. Key words: Limited Run.

The 2017 numbers aren't out yet (to my knowledge), but considering ALL the discounts, 'buy 1, get 1 free' and collection sales strategies the number could be inflated. Hell right now, Comixology has 2 Marvel Promotions. A 'Buy 1, Get 1 Free' and a '.99 sale'. The .99 sale has most of the crap books they always claim are "BestSellers" lol.
I would actually recommend checking the .99 sale if you guys like over 95% discount rates for the Marvel Master Works.

Depends on the context you're asking that question. The TL;DR for this shitstorm is the American comic industry depends on DC/Marvel not collapsing in on themselves and Marvel has become infamous for hiring a bunch of political spergs who'd rather scream about nazis in their cereal than create a product people want.
Marvel Entertainment is a separate business from Marvel Studios and no, indie comics have no where near the weight of the Big Two.
