I can never stop emphasizing this, they scrapped nearly everything about Carol's original backstory. Now considering what a trash fire her comics have been since she became CM, maybe scrapping everything was a good idea. BUT they scrapped all the good part of her too and because they're so open about the movie's politics, you know exactly what you're gonna get. All the current cringe from CM's comics without the pesky background/history of the character that won you over in the first place.
The movie will do well, it's a fucking Marvel film, but I do suspect it will do poorly compared to the others. I might be wrong, Black Panther had a similarly obnoxious marketing and it did very well. The movie wasn't as good as the others, again for a Marvel film, but it made a shit ton of money despite it because of how fucking psychotic Black Twitter were over it.
The biggest difference’s between Black Panther and Captain Marvel is the audience had already been introduced to the Black Panther in Captain America Civil War. And he was great in that. Enough so that people wanted to see more of him. And the BP trailers very clearly showed off more of what everybody liked about h8. In Civil War. So BP was already in their comfort zone. Add to that that Black Panthers appeal as a “Black Character” did not conflict with, and was in fact simply a large subset of the already existing MCU fan base. Black Males like Capeshit movies. So they gave a movie guaranteed to appeal to an already entrenched customer group.
But Captain Marvel has a target audience problem. Yes their are female capeshit fans. My wife being a great example. But there aren’t a huge number of rad fem capeshit fans. The women that love Marvel movies are more often hooked by Robert Downey Junior, Chris Evans And Hemsworth, Benedict Cumberbach, etc. I know my wife looks at the Captain Marvel trailers and says bleah. So rather than build on an existing audience subset like BP, CM is trying to grab a new audience. A better audience a more progressive Flemish and inclusive audience. Wait? Where have I heard this before? Oh right every single endeavor that Got Woke And Went Broke. It’s Star Wars fans don’t need to be your audience for Star Wars movies, you can find a better audience! All over again.
