Dramacow Coraline Ada Ehmke / Corey Dale Ehmke - tl;dr Rules for thee but not for me

Does a weekly audit of performance seem normal to anyone in the industry? If he had said "team leader" or something I would buy that- a small pod of workers with one who perhaps had seniority or greater credentials could review the workflow and appraise it somewhat on the weekly. But weekly reviews of what sounds like a pretty comprehensive nature with a manager? Sounds like he wasn't measuring up or fitting in to the culture, and was given a performance improvement plan with defined goals to meet, and failed to meet them.
I don't think I have ever seen weekly, especially for a senior level resource. It suggests to me someone is already a problem and the manager is in babysitting mode.
At places I've worked, PRs have to be reviewed (somewhat thoroughly) by one other person before being merged. That was because there was usually one main repo and if you fuck it up, the production servers get fucked up. It's possible that Coraline's work at github consisted of her being solely responsible for a handful of little repos instead of just one big one. So they might've more willing to let Coraline shit all over the projects she's responsible for, and then they just batch scan over her work each week.

Just a theory, anyway.
Sounds like they went the extra mile to try and retain him (or force him out, which I guess is the real purpose of many PIPs), but he wasn't worth the effort. Which is telling, as those in the know (or moreso in the know compared to me- coding talk isn't totally greek to me but its very much out of my depth) suggest that while maybe not a great programmer, he was at least competent. Must have been some very severe conflicts of personality on the team to which he was assigned.
It seems they took Coraline on to make github more welcoming to minorities. Little things like "let's put rainbow flag in markdown, that'll be cute empowering!".

But she tried to take her job more seriously than github liked (ie getting in the way of actual work) and management was not amused.

More likely, just acted like such a psycho that the people who do the actual work said we're quitting unless you get rid of that fucking troon.

:agree:Coraline did nothing wrong
:agree:Somehow her bad behavior following her firing is an argument for diversity hires
:agree:The only reason why Coraline lost this job after 1 year is a failure on GitHub's part
:agree:Relevant to target audience

Oh, Reality is here with "Former GitHub Employee Writes Compelling Argument Against Diversity Hires"
:agree:The only reason why Coraline got this job after failing to hold a job over 2 years at 5 separate companies is a failure on GitHub's part

Coraline took a break from trashing her 6th 1-year stint to show everyone how smart she is:

Yes, I'm even more convinced now github was wrong and Corey is not at all an insufferable twat.

I don't feel sorry for github at all, this is what you get when you embrace degeneracy diversity.

edit: if he really did experience "harassment" and "discrimination" for being trans and a fake woman then why isn't he suing? It would be a very easy case to win if true and he'd win big since he's in a liberal turd state.

I've been following this drama, and I thought that this line from Ehmke's article really sums it up:

there was, in fact, a real problem with empathy.

But that problem wasn't mine.

Absolutely zero insight. No owning her own actions.

The data scientist who kicked off the hurt feels is a cis woman with a PhD. I think my source for that was this SomethingAwful thread which discussed her but I can't find the receipts right now and her name was edited out which is fine since she's not the issue. Ehmke's manager is also a cis woman. For someone so dedicated to feminism Ehmke seems to find it very hard to interact with other women respectfully and this doesn't bode well for her employment at StitchFix.

Holy fucking lol @ the page 2 Twitter convo where she interrupts her friend's suicide attempt for HER OWN suicide attempt. That's sitcom shit.

Because correlating his degeneracy with his firing is likely impossible, even with a sympathetic far left judge. And the performance improvement plans and associated steps taken are ironclad arguments that he was either an insufferable twat, incompetent, or both. Also, filing a suit would cost money, and given that he had to rely on donations from his support network, I'm going to say he doesn't have much of it and is probably very bad at managing it. With such a long history in programming at such a variety of locations he should realize how volatile employment can be with those companies, and plan accordingly.

Any idiot dealing with muh-soggy-knees and discrimination would have documented emails, the pip, and tracker. Especially any brave and honest woman dealing with sexist tech bros and women managers with internalized misogyny. Something just seems off about the entire story including the rush by garbage journalists to paint Github as just another sexist workplace with zero proof other than the story from a deranged tranny.

One look at his work history and psych issues should be enough to cast doubt on his entire story. Would love for github to make a statement similar to what Nintendo did when they shit canned Rapp.

It would be a very easy case to win
No, these cases generally aren't easy to win because it's hard to prove that they didn't fire you for another reason.
I'm not saying that Github did anything discriminatory. In fact, all of the evidence that we have points the other way, but they're hard cases.

The reason paper trails are generated like this is the burdens of proof and procedures in discrimination cases.

An overly simplified version of it is this:

The plaintiff pleads that she is a member of a protected class (race, religion, sex, national origin, in some cases sexual orientation or gender identity or a very small number of other classes), and that she was fired because of this.

This is essentially more of a pleading requirement than an evidentiary requirement, although in some cases, the plaintiff might have to present some kind of evidence to move on, like their own affidavit. This is called presenting a prima facie or a colorable claim, meaning the claim itself is sufficient to move the case onward.

This shifts the burden to the defendant, and again, this is more of a pleading requirement than a proof requirement, that they actually had a non-discriminatory reason for the firing. This is where your timeline of events of the plaintiff completely fucking up comes into play.

This shifts the burden back to the plaintiff to show that this was a pretextual reason.

At this point, the plaintiff may have failed to carry their burden and the case can be dismissed.

Similarly, if the undisputed facts at this point lead to a legal conclusion, the case can be subject to summary judgment for plaintiff or defendant, either in its entirety or in part. Sometimes, partial summary judgment goes both ways with both sides going forward with any remaining claims.

If this doesn't dispose of the case, you move on to trial.

The potential defendant in a case like this wants abundantly clear, indisputable evidence that they had a legitimate, non-discriminatory reason for firing, so that the case goes away at the dismissal or summary judgment phase rather than going on to an expensive trial where they're unlikely to reclaim their legal fees and expenses from some unemployed asshole they fired, who is probably going to have a hard time finding another job after suing their previous employer.

So bridges were burning, but Ehmke had a chance to douse the flames before they were completely gone and decided to let the immolation finish just so they could play victim, even if it meant giving GitHub a perfect excuse to do their best to blackball Ehmke from gainful employment with them ever again, and they were insanely generous both during and even after the firing.

This isn't as bad as Alex Mauer's self destruction, but it's still extremely stupid.

How is GitHub even in business throwing a quarter million at some useless spastic psycho?

Seriously, people need to find a better place to do open source shit, which doesn't involve paying useless assholes to throw tantrums until they're fired.

Wait, Jesus, a Director title at Leo Burnett?

I missed that part of this. Holy fucking shit! How the fuck do you go from there to here?

Yet more proof that troonery is pure mental illness.

What's great about this is she only changed course and turn against GitHub when people found out she was fired. I say this because initially she tried to mislead people into thinking she never lost her job:
upload_2017-6-3_16-5-22-png.228730

I'm guessing when she "decided to start looking for a new job" a week before her firing that she got the reception you can expect from someone who has been unable to hold down a job for 6 years.
upload_2017-7-11_17-34-46.png

Unfortunately, she's a bit too "well-known" to the managers competent enough to make background and reference checks mandatory.
So I'm guessing she tried to worm her way into a position through her old connections without acknowledging that the impeccable Coraline got fired or failed in any conceivable way. To be fair, anyone who put in this recommendation would have worked with this hypothetical Ruby coder as much as they worked with Coraline and cared as much about "their" value to the company.
Of course, when the "GitHub" staff tag came off and people started noticing, well, there goes that strategy:

Gotta love how she neglects to link directly to her resume and never admits that she just kicked off her job search with a lie. Then again, her last job was $240k/yr after a string of 1-year stints and a history of interpersonal issues.
upload_2017-7-11_17-23-54.png
So her brilliant plan is in shambles. KotakuInAction is "speculating" about her and she just knows she's smart and brilliant and GitHub was lucky to have her, so what can you do about that?
Easy. You wait until you get your 7th 1-year stint and then assume whatever you have left over from that $240k/yr salary makes you secure enough to write a $20k blog post attacking the very employer who provided said security.
On an unrelated note, GitHub had an operating loss of $66 Million in 2016, and I would put their Coralines, "diversity consultants", or cancelled conferences less in the "defensible uses of investor money" category and more in the "if you wind up in court over this, you may want to bring a toothbrush and a change of socks" category.

The fact that a raving loon like this with a history of being a total whack job and getting fired on an annual basis could get hired pretty much puts the lie to the nonsense about troons being vastly discriminated against, because a normal person with this work history would have trouble getting a job. There are apparently a lot of places that will hire a troon just for being a troon.
