As per the title, do you have any songs you enjoy that have been covered adequately matching (or surpassing) expectations set by the original?

Here's a classic song most would recognize:

It turns out that a metal band I had heard of years ago covered it and, in my opinion, covered it quite well:

I think it holds the haunting theme of the original in a more modern tone quite well. It also maintains almost all of the original lyrics, save for one small nod towards the band itself. It's not some overblown "lolwediditbetter" masturbatory effort by the covering band. The cover is just another band celebrating the original work more or less faithfully.

I like that in a cover song.

What do you think? Agree, disagree, or perhaps you have your own selection to add? I'd love to read and listen along. :)

I like the cover of this song better. I'm fond of when bands take a song and make it their own. This is the original.

And this is the cover.

These are a good example too. I like both a lot though.

<Crazy comparisons>

I really like that cover. I'd say it's almost its own song, even.

The more I think on it, the more I'd agree that there can be some merit in trying to reinvent the base material.

Still listening to the others for now.

Edit: That second comparison wasn't too shabby either. The cover reminded me of a more erm..Goth/Industrial vibe? I've heard different people define Industrial as a genre just as many different ways, so your mileage may vary.

Either way, I hadn't heard either before. It's nice hearing something new.

Johnny Cash covering Hurt

I think this is easily one of the absolute best examples of the cover surpassing the original in every conceivable way. As much as I can appreciate some of his work throughout the years, I don't think Trent Reznor can express what an old man (and quite notable musician in his own rite) who's lived a long life full of regret can't express ten times over with this song. Absolutely beautiful and harrowing all at once.

Edit 2 (must..avoid..post spam): This cover of Danger Zone is great, @EurocopterTigre. Fucking metal bonerific, even. The ending is absolutely hilarious, too.

Hahaha, Christ. Take my breath awaaaay..

I agree. I heard the cover first and was surprised it was a cover of an old country song. It fit Kidneythieves style so well.

Yeah Robert Smith actually said that he liked that cover because they tried to sound different from his version. They're a black metal band so I enjoyed hearing them try something a little different altogether. I really like this thread idea! I'm interested to see what else people post.

We all know the answer to this.
Orgy's "Blue Monday".

Definitely an upgrade (by more than a few notches) over the original, I'd say. I think the increased intensity on the refrain really helped.

Such a shame that band didn't really get anywhere after Candyass ran its course. I quite enjoyed them back in the day.

Edit: Oh hey, that's the single release, isn't it? I didn't realize that was even up on Youtube anywhere.

Many people think that Merrilee Rush was the first person to record "Angel of the Morning", written by Angelina Jolie's uncle James Wesley Voight a.k.a. "Chip Taylor", but it was actually Evie Sands.

Evie Sands - Angel of the Morning
Merrilee Rush - Angel of the Morning

I had never heard of the original. Learned something new.

I wish the Deadpool opening hadn't meshed together the first and second verses weirdly, where the second line of the first verse is immediately followed by the second line of the second verse.

Isn't it fun when you realize something so unnoticed or subtle to damn near anyone else that you may as well shout into the void about it for all the good your 'tism will do for you in that moment? Been there before.

However, my peak childhood years were in the 1980s so I, of course, prefer the Juice Newton version, if just for the intro.

“All along the watch tower” covered by Jimi Hendrix. It’s legendary.
I also like Save Ferris’ version of “Come on Eileen” better the original.
And Alestorm’s cover of “Hangover” is a fun one as well.
