Crazy pagans and polytheists

Unless you already have a Scribd subscription or urgently need a gag gift for someone, don't bother paying to read either of these books, Goddess in the Office (I received a copy of this for my bachelorette party many years ago; it contains spells for protecting your computer data, no lie) or Goddess in the Bedroom. The ads for them visible at that link will tell you absolutely all you need to know. (And for the woman who wants women to lie together in a pile and shag other women they don't necessarily know or like, the ad copy is surprisingly hetero-focused.)

If I knew all the secrets of the cosmos and shit, I would just use them to, you know, make money magically appear and maybe not have such a blatantly commercial personal website. Could it be that her umpteen books don't actually sell all that well?

Is it me or modern pagan figures like Z Budapest, Charles Gardner, and Aleister Crowley are in it for the sex. Any ideas?
Basically. Aleister Crowley's island was like a hippie commune in a lot of ways, only more edgy. And Gerald Gardner had a habit of attributing titles and experiences to himself that could easily be disproven. For a lot of them (Gardner in particular), paganism was just a way of getting easy pussy.

I have an honest-to-goodness question about paganism: the two pagans I've known (one in high school and one on facebook) have seemingly irrational hatred of Christianity. Now, I'm no Christian myself, but, like...is hating Christianity a requirement for paganism?

Pretty much what Surtur said. I find it interesting that a lot of pagans dislike Christianity, yet carry over a lot of its logic into their new religion. Christianity was the first major religion that I know of in Europe to introduce that sort of diametric worldview: "You either convert and worship our God, or you keep your old Gods, but never both." A lot of pagans seem to still be unconsciously in that mindset, where they're convinced that Christianity is on the opposing side of some grand spiritual battle.

I'm interested in Paganism, but usually I stop at "crystal healing magic". (Really, my mom works at Whole Foods and people come in waving amethysts around the supplement bottles to see which one the crystal thinks they should take) I'm no expert on the ritual practices of the Druids but I'm pretty sure seasoning meat with your vagina is not one of them.

Not pagan, so take my opinions with a grain of salt, but ... Having known plenty of pagans over the years, I would say that the more-converted-than-thou factor is in play there. You see the same thing with new Christians: most of them just believe what they believe and go about their daily lives, but there's a small minority of people who have to underline their own decision to convert by emphasizing just how double-dog-dare WRONGGGG everyone else's choices are. Usually they're people looking for something bigger than themselves to believe in, and yelling about how everyone else is persecuting them gives them a sense of belonging as well as justifying their choice. The genuine pagans do their thing; it's usually the try-hards and the spiritual questers who make a big deal out of hating other religions.

I was recently stuck on a long car ride with a perpetual spiritual quester. He's a nice guy, but he started as Christian, fell into paganism, went back to Christian, and now he says he's Jewish. His newfound Judaism manifested in lecturing the only avowed Catholic in the car--yours truly--about how much Catholicism had ripped off and persecuted Jews and pagans. (That stupid Easter/Ishtar thing came up again.) Same deal: I think he's looking for something to be part of, and having a clearly-defined set of enemies is a big part of that.

Meet Outlaw393. Outlaw is a beautiful woman with an appearance that would make Pixy herself blush:

Her insides are just as delightful. She showed up on a number of religious forums, where she became a minor lolcow for her habit of changing religions about once a week, being delusional as fuck, and getting in dumb, passive-aggressive arguments with anyone who tried to talk some sense into her. After some digging, I now suspect (but can't prove) that she has some vague neo-Nazi leanings.

You know the stereotype of the clingy, whiny girlfriend who expects her boyfriend to do nothing but give her asspats all day long, not have any life outside of her, and never have any goals or interests that conflict with her own? Outlaw is this, except substitute an actual flesh-and-blood human boy with a certain trickster of Norse legend. Loki apparently talked to her in her head and told her he loved her, and boy did it ever fuck her up. (Coincidentally, I'm sure, she's also a huge Marvel fangirl.)

Here's my favorite Outlaw thread - long, but totally worth reading.

Highlights:
If I was really seen as that pathetic [in context: an ordinary human], I would've quit dealing with any of the gods a long time ago. Loki regularly refers to me as "precious one".

Loki is back, as far as I can tell. But no sign of Odin. Strangely last night I got a "Please don't leave me" from Loki. I figure this is not because he needs me, but because he loves me...?

I made him very happy. This morning I saw him smile at me for the first time in a while. I love that smile.

I'm hoping this relationship can become warm and intimate. I'm already feeling warmth, both literally and figuratively.

I was worried I'd be selected for jury duty. Loki said, "It's already taken care of."
Two weeks later I get a letter in the mail that says I've been selected.
NOT taken care of, I see. Epic fail on his part.

(Like Vade, she also uses the "BAAWWW, I'm too poor to afford therapy!!" excuse even as others try to help her find free or low-cost options in her area.)

The whole Lokean thing is actually just part of her long, long history of religious bullshittery. At the beginning of 2010, she was a Christian. Well, okay, Christian/Odinist. About a month later, she was back to Satanism. In 2013, she was back to Catholicism again, but not really, because converting is really really hard. Around the end of 2013, she converted to Islam. There are a bunch more conversions - like, literally every other time she comments anywhere she has a different religion - but I don't have the energy to track them all now.

Of course, keep in mind that she's actually angelkin, so I guess she can't be expected to abide by our petty human social rules.

Outlaw is not just crazy but also stupid: she uses the same username on her Odinist-Lokean-Catholic-Wiccan-atheist-Jewish-Satanist-Muslim rantings as on accounts that contain her actual legal name. I'm not going to link to any of these here because I don't want to dox her, but she honest-to-Loki doxxed herself, and all you need is a quick Google search to find out where she went to grade school.

Anyway, I found comments by her (which I won't link to because they're under her real name) on several sites with, ironically, a pretty strong anti-Muslim vibe, making her just about the worst Muslim ever. In actuality, her suspect her political beliefs of being rather more radical than her appearance on these Tea Party-esque sites would suggest. On an Odinist forum, she claimed to be "very folkish." Folkish is not really the same thing as white supremacy - as I understand it, it's the belief that people should follow the religion they're ethnically connected to - but a lot of Nazitru have used "folkishness" as a smokescreen for their racism. It's worth noting that in context, Outlaw seems to be stating that she doesn't want non-Germanic people in her religion du jour.

I guess she's still at it, because right now her dA ID links to Joy of Satan ministries. Now let me tell you something. I'm not a Satanist, but it's something I once seriously considered, and Joy of Satan is basically a pseudo-religious cover for racist, antisemitic bullshit. Other Satanists won't touch them unless they're as fucked up as JoS is.

Bizarrely, she either doesn't have a tumblr or used a different username for once. If anyone can find a tumblr account for her, I will give them a cookie.

Of course she is folkish.

There is an atheist witch group on Facebook. It's full of SJWs and bitch slapping. I'm not entirely sure whether this should go in this thread, the euphoric atheists thread or the SJWs thread but here ya go. Witness godless witches in the current yr passionately declare the terms white magic and black magic are racist.
Atheist Witches: Godless Witchcraft and Feminist Bitchcraft
This is a safe space for atheist witches and people who are interested in learning about atheistic witchcraft. This is also a place free of stiff rules that make it hard to be yourself in other groups. Most are welcome, and everyone is given a chance to belong here.

By joining this group and answering the questions to enter, you are implying that you have read and agreed to the group rules. If you want to be a longterm contributing member of this group, I suggest that you DO read the rules and take them to heart.

Please familiarize yourself with common terms associated with atheism and witchcraft:

The Easter/Eostre/Ishtar thing is just aggravating. I'm a devout Catholic and I can point out where Catholicism factually took pagan stuff into it and then transformed it. There wasn't a whole lot of persecution against pagans considering the population of Europe was majority pagan until like the 14th century. Proselytizing rural areas was fucking hard.

All of these "spiritual seekers" seem to stumble upon Zeitgeist and then their brains turn to mush.

Trying NOT to powerlevel here, but why are these crazy cunts praising Loki, he's like Norse Satan

I'm going to presume it's because they get all their information on Norse religion from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and have never actually read anything about Norse mythology or old Germanic paganism.

Meh. Occult and magic are just like music or certain kinds of sexual practices - if you spend your day talking about it publicly on the Internet, you are a poser and not actually doing it.

"Z., like thousands of teenage girls, seriously believes that Wicca is the oldest religion in the world " To be fair if HP Lovecraft's "Supernatural Horror in Literature" is a credible source it was a common belief among Puritans and other paranoiacs that "witchcraft" is the covert continuation of ancient pagan rites, predating both Christianity and the Hellenic pantheon. Also because of HPL's obsession with race, he thought it was likely the religion of the pre-Indo-Europeans too.
