So I decided to also give the medieval inspired role playing game called Pillars Of Eternity a try and once I got through the first chapter, I decided to take a stroll outside in my designated outdoor fenced area of my house and man the Hymenopteras out in my Graminae patches were a nightmare. So when that was a no go I decided to head to the Grocery Store with the designated name Fred Meyer and buy myself a can of Insect Poison which we call raid. So I got back into my mechanical automobile, this was an invention from Henry Ford back in the 1800’s, and headed back to my place near the crossroads called Liminal’s Lane.


…Why is the game written this way? I’m really not going to like this aren’t I?

Be glad that this is what you're getting. Pillars 2 is just reddit horny dialogue all the way and with Avowed(takes place in the same universe) they removed the horny part and doubled down on the reddit. Pillars 1 might be the last well written Obsidian game(I think Tyranny also wasn't bad but I didn't play that one yet).

Personally I've always thought it was the worst of both worlds. It's a generic and prosaic setting with standard D&D slop content, but it's ALSO impenetrably baroque. It doesn't matter how detailed you make your history and background stuff if it just fundamentally isn't all that interesting. If you're going to put all that effort into describing the little details to the point you're using a fictional naming language that's basically making it impossible for regular gamers to pronounce anything, you want to make sure it's in service to something really worth learning about. It takes some effort learning the lore of the Planescape setting but that setting is actually interesting and has content outside the standard bears, dragons, and ancient elves.

I remember someone involved with PoE1's development admitting that they didn't have much time to edit the script. I didn't mind Pillars' lore too much but I found the moment-to-moment writing really fucking dull in both the first and second games. The second game's purple prose is especially funny because the game is fully voiced and chunks of it are even narrated, leading to shit like the narrator telling you what someone's voice sounds like... even though you just listened to the character's voice.

The crazy part is I actually played Avowed a month ago and the only dialogue I remember was the fish guy reiterating to my face what I just saw on my television screen. I don’t remember what else was said because I ended spam clicking the skip button.

Yeah the game’s writing is overly expository with a lot of alien terminology that feels like it was a poor translation of a language that doesn’t exist. It’s like a reinvention of the wheel but instead we got an octagonal shape that kind of looks like a wheel, but isn’t and is rough to use.


Gameplay wise this is where the game is surprisingly shitting the bed for me the most. Every character needs to put all their points into might because their spell power and ability number modifiers all rely on it for whatever fucked up reason. Not that I’m mad at all because the other stats seem completely worthless in comparison. I rolled a Druid and Druid is like the shapeshifter spec from BG1 and 2 except even more broken and overpowered. The big key difference between that and this is in BG1, you had to long rest to recharge it. Here you can use it every encounter meaning there’s virtually no reason at all not to use it. You can’t set up buffs for whatever fucked up reason and because Druid forms are so broken in terms of number crunches, you basically only play half the classes kit the grand majority of the time.

I’ll keep digging though, but from what I’ve seen of chapter 1, it’s not looking very good. Apparently I chose the evil option by killing a couple in the town because the man set up one of his friends to get killed and then stole his wife, but apparently he was abusive? They had no proof and there seemed to be no remorse from either of them so my initial thought was guilty. But I guess I’m a piece of shit for thinking this way?

Durance and Grieving Mother were both written by Avellone and had the worst prose of the game easily. Grieving Mother especially because she doesn't even really fit into the game world and seems more like some idea that he had for PS:T that didn't make the cut.

Otherwise though I thought the lore was interesting. A wee bit heavy-handed with the real world references though. (look everyone it's not-Italy!)

Explains a lot. In rpgs I usually always do first playthrough as neutral good character but I was pondering rerolling some evil alignment however if you say the woke drops off I might stash the sticking out like a sore thumb companions somewhere and use mercs. I am going to make Lann my bow cleric. He seems nice enough.

Most of the companions aren't great and up to personal taste. One of the things about WoTR is with the Mythic rules you can make a fantasy superhero and it's fun to find all the ways you can break the game. Lann works better as a turret, and I always found Camellia (Shut up I can fix her) and Ember put out enough healing. They also serve well enough for all the buffs you'll need.

WoTR is good, it's not nearly as good as Baldur's Gate II or the Icewind Dales. But if you want something that feels like those older games, and can get past the cringe in parts. WoTR serves well enough.

I would really prefer if someone in the indiespace would develop a game of that iso infinity engine style that didn't go for broke with modern graphics and just focused on expansibility and content and mod support. My dream iso crpg would be to BG what Morrowind with mods (Tamriel Rebuilt) is to first person action rpg. Maybe just pixely graphics or something easy to support and add assets to. I just really want a full campaign setting in crpg form. Been thinking about getting into gamedev myself cuz I literally cannot turn my brain off thinking obsessively about this dream game in my head. I toyed with Godot to teach myself the basics. Seems like it's theoretically feasible. Rainbow my dumb ass.

Big CRPG fan, played most of the classics, enjoy quite a few of the new ones. Anyone have any recommendations for a CRPG where you can play a truly evil character? Not talking Saturday morning cartoon villain or D&D chaotic stupid murderhobo but where you can play a truly dark and bleak character? Already played the obvious ones like Tyranny, cruel run Bleak Walker in Pillars of Eternity and did a lich run in Wrath of the Righteous that felt pretty good. Something along those levels.

Age of Decadence is great at pragmatic evil in a ruthless world, Rogue Trader is great for making over the top villainy feel plausible, Arcanum, NWn2:MOTB more like WOTR

I tried so many times to get into PoE1 but the writing is dreadfully boring and annoying to read. You start a conversation and the dialog box explodes in words words words which are 95% description of character emotion or what character is doing while responding and 5% is actual dialog. I know its an rpg but this always feels to me like a filler and getting to minimum thousand words you got on assignment. It breaks the flow of the game. BG1/2 used the dialog window properly - to convey dialog. Unimportant actions like 'raising a cup and smirking' can be left to imagination while important actions like attacking a character is left to cutscenes.

This period in gaming was so incredible. I'll always remember the 90s/00s when you used to actually find physical computer games in electronics stores. I even remember when the boxes the games came in downsized. This was the absolute best time in gaming.

I remember being into Siege of Avalon, as well as Deus Ex, at the time. You can find Siege of Avalon on Steam.

Vanilla Pillars is rather boring and a slog, but once you get to White March, it's incredible.
I have no idea why this happened, but if you can endure the original campaign until you get to White March, it will be worth it.

And if you're thinking of trying Deadfire, it's a mechanically sound game, with lots of build variety and best part, is you can script your companions how to behave in combat. The story is average and you'll have to deal with lots of niggers, gay furries, gay fish and grrl powah moments.
The DLCs also add a lot of fun stuff.
I recommend playing it and buying it when it's unde 10$ or so.

played Pathfinder:WotR for 2 hours and the setting of crusader states keeping the demons at bay is really cool but the "woke" is really noticeable and distracting. Every single major character is a female and/or gay. The companions you meet are 3/4 females(one black paladin). I am usually not bothered too much by this but this is ridiculous. I facepalmed when I got out of introductory dungeon and meet female half orc commander of city watch who is married to one of the females you fall to the dungeon.

As things go on, due to the nature of WoTR with its varied paths, the woke drops off hard and you can play it free from most of it. WoTR is pretty good overall, but the black paladin, and the black gay cleric have to be some of the worst chars. Black paladin is just boring, and black gay cleric is just....awful.

Sosiel isn't that bad, it was interesting seeing a sensitive artist find his place in a cruel world. He fails his main quest if you don't toughen him up before meeting the brother.
What I hate is how progressive he said his homeland was, and his 20th/21st century council suggestions, very immersion breaking.

The wokeness drops off massively past the start, no one is belittled for being male or conservative. However there's one merchant convo in the dlc that deserves posting.

That's almost Beemdog bad, though at least it requires you to ask before the lecture.

WotR is an awesome game, and pretty much a dream sequel to BG2:SoA.

Is the game done? Or are they still pumping DLC?

I played PKM years after release, with the EE and it was a good game, but from what I read, it was buggy as hell for a while.
Wrath I played a little during Beta, trying to get a feel what it's like, but I dropped it and forgot it after that.

Is it worth a try now?
I care about battles, builds and story. I'm also not a fag, and I didn't mind the timed quests or kingdom management in Kingmaker.

It's excellent and almost bug free now.
I don't think they'll release any more DLC for it, as they're currently developing three different games at once.

Wasn't the balance of the game completely broken at launch? Did they actually get around to fixing it or is this cope? I wouldn't know, the horny reddit dialogue filtered me out before I could even try it out, let alone get to the game being an unbalanced mess.
