That was the bullshit cover story meant to make the whole thing more palatable to the American public.I forgot about Grenada. Most people only know about that movie because of Heartbreak Ridge. I’m pretty sure my local Sheriffs Office could have taken that island. We did that because a thousand American students were at risk.
The real reason we did it was because a Communist regime, aided by the Cubans, took over a country geographically close to the U.S.
Additionally, they were building a 9,000 ft runway at Point Salinas that could accommodate heavy Soviet aircraft.
As per the authorized biography of Margaret Thatcher:
"According to Lawrence Eagleburger, the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs at the State Department, 'The prime motivation was to get rid of that son of a bitch [General Austin] before the Cubans got any further embedded … The students were the pretext … but we would not have done it simply because of the students."
We could have probably negotiated the safe return of the students. We couldn't negotiate the Commies dead.
Brother, it's not about how much of a threat they are. It's about keeping Commies out of power in the western hemisphere. Thus ensuring they never have the opportunity to morph into a threat. This has been U.S. policy for a long time.Cuba poses no risk to the United States. It’s the geographical equivalent of Brock Lesnar living down the street from Cyrax. The rage boner against it a Cold War grudge.
