You're more on the mark with a few things than you might realize. Gibson's contribution to Cyberpunk teetered more along the lines of the corporate-dominated aesthetic and teased around with the idea of technology reaching the point where anything can be consumed or blended into it; whether devices on an imaginary fiber grid or even people. Neuromancer had something of a more dreamlike or fantastical style to it because Gibson himself self-admittedly only knew very little of the technical aspects of computers at the time. Snowcrash kind of updated this viewpoint and dove into the nittier grittier parts of the genre.
The truth about this whole pride-month dopamine rush to co-opt the 'Cyberpunk' genre and tout it as a purely queer and trans expressive style is that while they aren't technically not getting it, they're getting only a percentage or even a quarter of what the genre actually encompasses. The idea that as society continues to tighten itself beneath regulation and oversight, empowering the push to expand what our definitions of risque behavior and counterculture is; this is expressed in many ways beyond anti-capitalist/punk anarchism and body modification, because 'high tech; low life' can extend to so many corners of society, so many faces of people driven by so many different circumstances to survive in worlds that have risen so high in the field of achievement, but often at the expense of pushing the boundaries of what is even considered human anymore, almost to the point of degradation. Cyberpunk's - that is the game - setting is especially invested in this because the social and cultural aspects of this new society are just as important to the experience and progression as the gunplay and hacking. It IS objectifying, it IS judgmental, it IS surface level and superficial as the chrome beneath the skin. That's the fucking point.
Cyberpunk is precisely what many of these twats supposedly dream of; a future in which they've become normal shlubs like the rest of us, free of judgement for being black, white, brown, yellow. Free of the social stigmas and medical complications of changing their sex or being attracted to their own sex because of things like religious degradation and overpopulation. AND because it's so mundane.
Compared to the kinds of shit society considers 'in' and pushing the envelope; compared to your standard playbeing catgirl biomod kits, gene splicing, wire and chrome subdermal replacements, or taking that big leap into Total Body Conversion and being essentially fated to ending up gunned down by the Psycho Squad in the midst of a schizophrenic rampage, who gives a shit if you were a man born in a woman's body or decided to spray paint your hair and take it up the ass.
OR maybe that's exactly why they're putting up such a fuss! Almost as if at some point, acceptance stopped being part of the general program. Makes you really fuckin' think.
