Careercow Dan Harmon - Creator of Community, co-creator of Rick and Morty, and barely functional alcoholic

Just going by the commentary on earlier seasons it seems like the reason we are getiing 5 episodes is because dan keeps delivering the final scripts late and the higher ups are tired of delays hiking up the budget. Just speculation but it wouldnt surprise if during the contract negotiations "if you guys want a bigger cut, you have to deliver the episodes on time." was brought up. A huge show not being produced on time and going over budget because of that can really chafe the higher ups I imagine. From what i understand how and when episodes are released is almost soley up to the networks discretion, to the point even creators sometimes dont know when shit will be out if ever.
So how much longer until he pisses off Lazzo?

I think there are some kiwis that have a better idea of what Mike Lazzo is like than I do, why adult swim does what it does is a complete mystery to me. My guess is that it's a loosely run ship that will do whatever it wants until Turner steps in to tell them to shape up.

And after a cursory google search. It seems like I may be right.

Basically I think Lazzo could care less, but the show got the attention of higher ups (either because of delays driving up production costs, or a source of sweet merch monies.) and now you have a belligerent head writer/co creator and a network who is tired of bullshit.

Edit: To clarify when I say higher ups I'm referring to Turner or CN execs or whoever goes over adult swim.

Edit 2 autistic boogaloo: Merch sales were a huge motivator for a long time for justifying the continued existence of a cartoon show. In recent memory I can't really think of any show that AS made that had so much merch interest. It depends on the contracts and the leverage a creator has, but from what I understand is that merch sales mostly go to the networks and the creators might not get anything at all from it. Adult swim is probably left to it's own devices until something like this pops up and then the bigwigs start actually taking notice.

Dan Harmon is one of those individuals that comes off as a self-righteous pseudo intellectual jizz bag, I've met many of these types of folks, on and offline. His tenancy to go on drunken Anthony Cumia rants is what pointed me to how much of a real cow he really is to begin with. You can see in his characterization of Rick, that he tries to state that is like some type of projection of himself. Despite that Dan Harmon in no way is the real life has any type of characteristic amount of intellect to substantiate his nonsensical diatribes. If anything he is like one of the drunkard blowhards you meet 11 PM on a Tuesday night at the local dive bar. He likes to talk too much and has no real substance leaving out of his mouth, outside of slurring nonsense and hostility anyone that rubs him the wrong way. I enjoyed some of the really early Rick and Morty episodes, but it went off the rails fag in the 3rd season. I barely managed to get through, despite how many times I heard my co-workers scream PICKLE RICK day in and day out. I cringe when I think about it.

AKA Dan's drunk.

This is a bit late, but Adult Swim is run sort of like a boy's club for its senior people. It doesn't matter how fucked up or how profitable your show is, what matters is that the old guard like you. For a case in point, take Sam Hyde's Million Dollar Extreme. It's a cult classic with a strong fanbase that was canned because Tim Heidecker hates Sam and bitched out the head of AS until he caved and canceled the show. Tim's reputation as a founding member and a part of the clique was stronger at motivating the studio than the profitability of a successful new show.

Not really huge news, but Harmon is leaving the original company that produced Rick and Morty.

Maybe some more drama is about to come down the pipeline.

I don't know if it was mentioned here but the Harmontown podcast finally ended in December, arguably the vehicle that resuscitated hia career in the wake of the Community drama. I stopped listening years ago (reading the Reddit sub confirms this was the right decision) but I think they built a whole studio for it in "Starburns Castle" but eventually abandoned that, there's most likely a LOT of shit going on behind the scenes.

We all know why Rick and Morty went downhill starting with season 3.

Huh, Dan was one of the co-founders of Starburns Industries. As far as I know he was friends with Dino Stamatopoulos and Joe Russo who are also co-founders. How odd.

I'd be pleased by this if it meant the show itself, Rick and Morty, could still be salvaged. That's not gonna happen, if how S4 has gone so far, is any indication, honestly. In fact, I think this might be the end..... Deep down, it's for the best. Too much drama 95% of the time gets in the way of doing any work proper.

R&M has been shit since season 2 and I will not be accepting any arguments to the contrary. Save my boy Roiland. Put Ryan Ridley on a train to "somewhere."

I'm just wondering how much of that is Dan's fault and how much of that is CN's fault, because it seems like there's more than one party to blame here if Harmon wanted 14 but we're getting two five episode runs instead.

Forgive me for replying to an older post, but does anyone remember when the fourth season of The Boondocks was announced to have twenty episodes? And it ended up only having ten episodes despite the gap between season 3 and 4 being twice as long as the gaps between other seasons?

I'd really like to know what goes on behind the scenes with some of Adult Swim's shows. Sometimes it feels like we get a lot less than we should.

That doesn't surprise me in the least. Adult Swim has often done what it felt like, not necessarily what's a good business decision. For example, Squidbillies ratings were sluggish, so they decided to air an all night marathon of the show to get people to like it. Or how much they pushed Tim & Eric despite lukewarm reception. Sometimes they come off as having a charming, rebellious spirit. Most of the time it just feels like they shoot themselves in the foot.

They're tightwads too. Remember Korgoth not getting picked up for a series or Stroker & Hoop not getting another season because they didn't want to shell out the money for them?

Don't forget how dirty they did Brendan Small and the whole Metalocalypse fiasco.
The story of Adult Swim must be pretty interesting, they take pretty wild risks on shows but seem like they're making it up as they go. On one hand you have T&E and then you have 12 Oz. Mouse, then they actually take a risk on World Peace regardless of how it all turned out.

And like you said, they pay pretty poorly for most people which is why you have Heidecker doing like 3 shows at once for them but having I assume 100% creative control like Clint Eastwood at WB just due to legacy. And why you end up with so many cartoons which very clearly cut corners.

Cancelling Metalocalypse wouldn't have been as much of a dick move if Brendan didn't just want one more season to conclude the story. They couldn't give him that much?
I have to assume he did something to upset someone. As far as I know it was one of their most liked shows airing at the time. What else would people have been watching, Superjail?

I've heard that Lazzo thought that the show was getting too serious. I can believe that since it's the same reason that they cancelled Moral Orel.
Which is stupid because the last season of Moral Orel was a masterpiece.
The rest of the show was good too, but it took it to a whole new level.

I heard rumors that they were sick of fans bugging them. Plus it's a fairly high budget show when you consider that Brendan has the animators accurately animate the extremely fast paced and highly technical guitar playing. Plus, Tommy Blancha (who voiced Toki and Murderface) was mysteriously absent from the series finale, so maybe there was drama with him too.

Hi. New to this thread. I enjoyed S1 and 2 of Rick and Morty. S3 was okay. Still catching up on Harmon. Had no idea he was this much of a sped. Kinda bummed I missed out on all this while watching the show over the years.

In this interview, the fat asian chick (writer of Pickle Rick) not only reveals that the therapist who's always right is a self insert, she also says she wanted that self insert to dominate Rick and definitively have the last word over him. Yeah...(starts at about 20:30)

Also funny that they hired someone who wrote on such marvelous shows such as the annoying orange and big time rush before. They must've really hired her for her past experience. Her name's Jessica Gao.

Completely off topic and not about Harmon. Still thought I'd post here.

Apparently Justin tweeted this bdsm pic of his girlfriend(?) a while back. Then quickly deleted it. Thought that was pretty funny/autistic.

Also, what's this all about? Do I want to know?

There was more to it than that. Sam was warned that the MDE subreddit "needed to be dealt with" and that his behavior on Twitter had to be kept in check. He didn't play ball and continued to draw negative attention. Sure, it was funny watching him spar with Buzzfeed reporters and shit, but there was no way AS was going to continue doing business with someone who refused to go through even a single layer of PR or drop character for a minute. Him getting a season of the show to begin with meant they were clearly fine with a controversial figure as long as he made some adjustments, but he didn't. I don't like Tim that much either, but I'd hardly say it was him pressing the button to nuke him from orbit for no reason at all.

Wow, it's even worse than I could have imagined.
They're like stereotypes.
