Careercow Dan Harmon - Creator of Community, co-creator of Rick and Morty, and barely functional alcoholic

Dans the kind of person who thinks its a secret that he's hurting on the inside but really he just won't shut up about it.
He very blatantly expresses it and in a way I think it's to get pity points. He's an asshole and normally people would treat him like shit for it, but he tells them of his flaws and his tragedies and he's probably not lying, maybe not even playing them up, but he uses it about like Pavlov's bell. He, either actively or subconsciously, knows people would be like, "Wow this dude's an asshole! But, oh, he had some bad shit happen to him, maybe that's why. I had bad shit happen to me, I can relate, I'll cut him some slack. That could have been me, I could have turned out like that. I get where he's coming from, I know those feelings." People are inherently empathetic but it also makes them feel better about overcoming their own struggles, and it takes the burden off him. He's not really a charmer but apparently he's got a silver tongue. Dude's a straight sociopath.

Yeah normal people have lots of bad shit happen to them in their lives, but you dont act like an asshole because of it. Hell, even if you become a substance abuser, you can be a decent, nice person that tries to make people laugh or smile or something. Hell if you're miserable, why wouldn't you want to make other people happy? Right? The people who have been through abuse found shelters and shit. They say the kindest people are usually the most miserable, or have suffered the most, regardless of the category, or extremity of that suffering, maybe even if they deserved it or not, the people who are the most miserable are the most desperate to make other people smile. To be liked. To belong. Whatever.

You know? Laugh and the world laughs with you. Whether or not they're laughing with or at you doesn't really matter because at least you're making them laugh. If your own existence is a pathetic fucking black hole of misery, at least you can take the burden off of someone else's shit, by sucking it into your own, because you're already a faggot. And then at least you might belong or have a purpose, people might care or even like you and you shouldn't take that for granted.

Dude's existence is spent spreading misery, not palliating it.

Thats honestly why I think people complaining about their depression/anxiety/etc are always just tremendous assholes, not suffering martyrs. EVERYONE deals with depression and anxiety, most of us aren't so weak that we let it define us because we think we're owed a life time of happy fee-fees. If 95% of the people on meds for that shit were just beat the shit out of until they stop being a selfish prick or just stop breathing, we'd all be better off for it

Basically, Rick is Harmon's self-insert: an alcoholic asshole who acts as if he's smarter than 99.99% of the world, and thinks that because he openly admits his flaws and assholeishness, that it somehow gives him a free pass to be an asshole. He tries to overcompensate with this schtick of "I act like I don't care, but I actually do care when it's important, like sexism against women and gay rights!" but it's nothing more than a lame attempt to fool people into thinking he's some kind of "diamond in the rough" or "dick with a heart of gold".

Instead of putting in the work to be a better person, Harmon instead puts more effort into constructing the facade of a good person.

Not that it matters to much nor do I put any stock in comparing Harmon to characters from a fucking cartoon, but in this regard, wouldn't Harmon be more akin to Beth?

Like, Rick actively goes out of his way to fuck with people and ruin their lives and only can get emotionally invested whenever it's his ego or status quo challenged or changed. Beth went on pretending like she was an intelligent, kind-hearted individual for three seasons and it took her grandfather to point out how much of a bitch she was after the rest of her family failed to do so that got her to recognize this.

Doesn't help that Beth's alcoholism is shown in a far less humorous light than Rick's constant drooling, stuttering, and fits of incompetency.

Ah the old asshole standby of "I'm just pretending to be a social trainwreck." If it wasn't a celebrity this would be typical lolcow fare, but the free pass would be :autism: and not fame.

The thing that gets me is there's probably a huge rabid fanbase going after whoever Dan feels like shitting on, which is something garden variety lolcows don't typically have.

Yeah, its called the fucking "human condition" for a reason, bitch. The medicine doesn't make you happy but it does make you even keel.

I mean Im one of the people your post is about. I mean its not that Im not listening to you. But.

I mean at least you can get along in society and people dont inherently hate your guts.

Rick is a self insert. Rick is what Harmon wishes he was. Rick is what Harmon thinks of himself.

Can you post the caps of the feud between h3h3 and Harmon?

Sure. Here's a summary:
Then this happened:

Papa Bless.

Anyway, six months later, Harmon was going on a blocking spree and decided to block Ethan just cause (archive).

Remember, Ethan is friends with Justin Roiland, not Dan Harmon.

Sorry your pops really fucked the pooch on you, chief

There was a Harmontown episode where he talked about being molested by his cousin as a child and how he’s been suicidal for years. He's also talked about it a few times on his own podcast called Grandma's Virginity. Hope these entitled fanboys aren't making him feel like shit.

I have a hard time believing that. Roiland is an edgelord who constantly makes jokes about molestation, weird thing to do if it makes you feel oh so bad. My guess: it was probably another one of his edgy jokes or trying to cover his ass from critique over his weird fixation on kiddy diddling.
lol of course someone posted pedo accusations against roiland a few pages later, shocker

edit: so the gist is, Dan Harmon is a self important alcoholic high on self pity, so like a lot of rich media producers and probably everyone knows such a dude irl (minus the rich part of course) if he's really like the dudes I know irl, he probably also thinks of himself as a modern day Bukowski, because all of them do, those poor intoxicated, broken and extremely unpleasant poets!

why are Tigger and Dolan claming that everyone is secretely a miserable nutcase? nope it's really just you, being sad or scared once in a while doens't mean you're clinically insane lol

I listened to an episode of Harmontown, this guy's podcast. It apparently started off trying to figure out what an ideal society would look like, but eventually morphed into Dan Harmon just talking about whatever. Imagine the level of narcissism it would take to record a podcast where you just dick around with your friends, without any gimmicks or topic.

Not to keep harping on the subject of Harmon's ex-wife, but it's interesting to note that she's a redhead, and a lot of the women that the two main characters of R&M have shown romantic interest in have also been redheads.

Even more interesting is the episode where Rick gets back with his old girlfriend, Unity. Unity is a hive mind who has many different bodies, but her main one throughout the show is, you guessed it, a redhead. In the episode, Rick gets back together with Unity and his self-destructive behavior proves infectious, causing her to become self-destructive too. She realizes this, and so she leaves Rick. Rick, in response, slips into a deep depression and attempts suicide.

Given the timeline of their marriage, this episode was likely produced at a point where it was beginning to fall apart, but before it actually did. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that this was Harmon's attempt to send a message to her. "I'm a piece of shit, but I KNOW I'm a piece of shit, so it's okay. Don't leave me, though, or I'll kill myself." I know that this is mostly me making assumptions, but at the same time, Rick is Harmon's self-insert, and the episode aired in 2015 (the same year the divorce happened). It's definitely a possibility.
