Like a lot of breadtubers, I actually like his visuals on a fundamental, aesthetic level, but the problem is they don't seem to actually serve anything. Just cool visual ideas implemented for the sake of implementing them, or perhaps to baffle viewers into thinking they're watching something profound. In reality, any of Olsen's videos could be a quarter of the length and contain just as much information.

The video isn't really about AVGN. It's supposed to be a look at how your criticisms of people reveals a lot about you. That was the whole point being made with the segment on Wavelength and was made pretty obvious with the endling line being Dan saying to himself, "What you need to do to progress is confront your insecurities and accept that you're not a film maker either"

Not really, Someone else put it best: "It's a polite version of Lolcow shit". Dan feigns self awareness about how he's also a failed filmmaker like James to justify most of the video making fun of/shitting on James Rolfe. The Doug video was more honest with Dan just shitting on Doug (probably because he got pissy about getting fired from CA and Mike "Constructive Criticism or Ban" Michaud didn't want to disable comments on his Gamergate video among other things in his short term at CA).

Not particularly closer than anybody else, he was cited cause he made the first breadtube video on Cinemassacretruth and the decline of AVGN.

The video itself is just another subreddit takedown video against r/Cinemassacretruth, like his video against r/Superstonk r/wallstreetbets and associated subreddits. It just has his egotism tacked onto it as he flexes on James.

That, and the fact the don't bend to the common consensus. A lot of Breadtubers are used to easy targets, so when someone does a no-no, doesn't apologize, and gets to live on without life-altering consequences, that means they aren't making an impact. For a bunch of wanna-be journalists with a bad case of Trolls Remorse, that might be the worst of all.

I don't really like any Breadtubers, but in light of videos like this, I have to say there's something particularly malignant about Olson, even the likes of Philosophy Tube doesn't quite get the same level of disgust from me as he does (and not for lack of trying), despite Oliver Thorne being much more obviously stupid, demented and bad at being a public intellectual.

Its the sense of petty resentment more than anything I think, as far as I can tell with Olson he's basically always been a little troll who holds dearly to his retarded internet grudges, with specific people or places. In that regard he really is just like most of the people who post here, but unlike us he dresses it up with the pseudo intellectual pomp and circumstance to present as something somehow deeper. Most breadtubers do that though: find someone they don't like, wait until they do something people can't defend, and then use it to ride your disdain while being told you're correct and having instant defenders for your bad-faith take. All while getting paid better than school teachers for making a video every 3-4 months. It's a pretty effective tactic.

Olson does it a lot more, like Lindsay Ellis doesn't really seem to bother with such things, and its not like there's anything about Rolfe that particularly prompts this beyond him being vaguely mediocre nowadays?

He just comes across as so particularly online, and also particularly petty and vindictive. At this point it would probably be healthier for him to just make an account here and just flick peanuts at people he doesn't like without giving it that much thought rather than doing this thing where he makes 2 hour long videos that take months and where he has to figure out a way to try and make it seem like its actually a very serious and deeply considered topic and not just childish seething.

I think the most interesting thing about Dan's appearance over the years is how quickly he's gone grey.

I don't know if it's lifestyle/well-being related or just a fluke of genetics, but I don't think I've ever seen it happen so quickly to someone.

James infamously has started aging, but, despite being the same age, he still looks like 20 years younger than Dan

Meanwhile AVGN is raising a family, just doing his own thing without caring about what other creators are doing.
