The reality is these websites have to respond reasonably to subpoenas whatever the underlying merits of the lolsuit. If subpoenaed, Josh would have to turn over the same information (although he probably has lot less than say Google). That's why there is a long warning on the sign-up page about never using repeat information across websites.

If anonymous people are fucking with your life over the internet, unmasking them by subpoena'ing the services they used to fuck with you is what's supposed to happen. A motivated-enough person could impact your life pretty catastrophically over the internet, and people need some kind of avenue to deal with that. Only because they were subpoenaed, it’s not like he politely asked and they handed it over billing addresses. Even Josh would have to hand over info if he got a legal subpoena to do so, and it’s why he constantly tells people to use a VPN, use good opsec and requires the bare minimum to register here. He doesn’t want your data but if a subpoena is served he legally has to hand over what he’s got.
