The body releases male-associated sex hormones when struggling against feelings of fear, shame or guilt. Those hormones excrete in sweat and smell similar to the most distinctive chemicals in intact male cat piss. The interesting thing is that the smell is generally so faint it's undetectable, but people subconsciously expecting it will smell it anyway in something of a psychosomatic effect. Trying to catch out a liar by smelling for cat's piss? You'll smell it, whether they're lying or not. Sounds to me like David is coming apart so hard that his glands are seeping with the acrid stench of fear and shame, the fear and shame of a weak, terrified, unfulfilled person, the fear and shame that only he can smell because there's nobody else in the world paying attention to the pain that he tries to surmount every day of his miserable, frightened, pointless little life.

That or a cat pissed on his pants while he was asleep.
