Black Adam was the worst part of this half a decent JSA movie. Despite being race-swapped, I think the guy that played Hawkman did a good job. He and Brosnan carried it, they could of been the focus of a much better movie. Brosnan's Dr Fate wasn't as butchered as I expected, though it's kinda schitzophrenic in being butchered and true the the comics where they will say and do things that go back and forth. Atom Smasher and Cyclone were both charismatic despite barely having enough time to be more than bit parts. Black Adam sucks, his "But I'm the Superman that kills" doesn't really fit in the DCU where all the super heroes kill. It's played up like it's trying to appeal to 90's kids who wanted edgey heroes and gobbled up Spawn. Johnson was rather flat, he himself was never terrible, but he also never added much to the character or my enjoyment.

I love Amanda Waller as a villain... so to see her becoming the DCCU's Nick Fury is fucking stupid.

My only issue was the whimpering about the country being occupied, despite zero context for what that entailed. We had zero insight into its legitimate government, who is supposed to be leading it, etc.

I'm not expecting a full political breakdown, but even a brief "they killed our leader and shot anyone that fought back" would have explained it well enough, and add weight to the lack of meta human intervention. As it is, you get the impression its an anarchist state that Intergang claimed by virtue of being there.

rules of nature
if you aren't strong enough to keep it and unwilling to retake it, you deserve what you get for staying there

Some issues I had with the Black Adam have already bene covered by previous posts. Race-swapping Hawkman and Cyclone for diversity points (there seem to be some idpol with the villain wanting the MacGuffin crown to make his country great again). No explanation to how Kahndaq ended up being occupied by Intergang. Portraying Amanda Waller less as villain and more like Nick Fury (I'm probably in the minority with saying she was best presented in the first Suicide Squad movie). Bits of MCU humor especially in the midst of action scenes (I got Tom Holland Spider-Man vibes at times with Atom Smasher).

All that being said, I still found it to be enjoyable and worth the money I spent for a ticket. The main and supporting characters were not annoying or cringe (despite my previous comments about Atom Smasher). While the plot was basic, it established Black Adam in the DCEU and a potential showdown with Superman and maybe Shazam (depending on how the latter's next movie turns out).

Critics do have a Marvel bias, but not in the way fan boys think. They aren't giving DC movies bad reviews because Marvel, but rather failing to give Marvel movies the reviews they should.

Going off the trailer, the 45% metacritic seems about fair, but shit like Black Widow has 67 and Black Panther has a crazy 88 even with it's awful visual effects.
Widow was good. Not epic and amazing but serviceable thanks to the four mains especially Yelena and Alexei. Panther is straight up woke nigger garbage.

Of course they would make Hawkman black. Why wouldn’t they?

Black Adam seems pretty fine otherwise.
To be fair, it's one of the best race swaps in the current age, mainly due to the actor being good enough for the role AND drawing no attention to his race. That and they didn't go on and on and on about "FiRsT BlAcK SuPeRhErO EvAh!!!1" in the marketing. I didn't even know they had done it until I watched the film.

The fact that Hawkman just reincarnates as different people lends credence to the idea that he could be black at any point....but it also presents the plot hole that Dr. Fate sacrificing himself to protect him is less meaningful.

I don't think we watched the same movie....or you're naturally slanted towards anything with Scarlett Johansson in it. Whichever.

The problem is that a character whose natural calling is a story in the Cold War is not immortal enough to be set in it, so instead we got a Civil War midquel featuring spies-who-don't-know-how-to-be-spies.

...at least it wasn't Wonder Woman 1984?

Personally speaking i have been waiting almost 10 years for a damn Widow film
Unfortunately they couldn't do the La Femme Nikita type film since there's already dozens of those (Anna, Red Sparrow, The Americans tv show)....and its fucking Disney.

The main problem most had with it is the third act. But then that happens in every marvel film by far. I wanted it a bit more grounded in reality. They should have gone hard R but this is why we can't have nice things. (I suggest the story arcs No Restraints Play, Welcome to the Game, and Deadly Origin)

However as I said, the four leads worked well. Florence was the biggest draw imo and she fucking killed it, questionable dialogue coaches aside. Also JLD showing up as the anti-Fury and irl troll Valentina to snark and help set up the Flopeye series was a nice lead in.

Honestly looking forward to Yelena getting to showdown with Val in Thunderbolts for what happened with Natasha.

Just finished it. Surprised everyone's missed the thinly veiled idpol. The movie starts off when Khandaq, a free black nation (also the only free nation at the time) is conquered by light skinned invaders - who enslave all the dark skinned Khandaquians. Then later it's conquered by Interpol, who are seemingly all white except for the one guy who becomes Satan 2.0. There is the obligatory race swapped Ginger, Cyclone. And the good guys, the Justice Society, are portrayed with overtones of colonialism. This movie is just as woke as all the other ones.

I think people are getting so used to woke politics in entertainment that anything outside of a 10 minute monologue from the lead about how all white/men/straight people are evil just flys under the radar for them. The messaging has been in literally everything for the last ten years, and if all you watch is new stuff, it just becomes the baseline. If you watch older movies and tv for a while (do it, it's all so much better written and acted) it will stick out like a big, red flag when you watch anything recent.

As far as the rest of the movie, meh. It's bog standard capeshit, with predictable lines and plotting. The acting was ok, with both Hawkman's & Doctor Fate's actors being above average (it's Pierce Brosnan, he could phone it in and still be good). The fight scenes were good and the CGI wasn't crap, but it was all CGI. Overall, it was an ok 90 minutes, but not worth a second watch. Probably not worth a first watch either.
Building off that, the only white dude hero, who happens to be so old he was involved in ww2, dies to be succeeded by a black guy. But all in all I don't really have problems with it here, because it's all undertones that don't mean anything to 99% of the viewers. And it's either mostly harmless or something even someone on the right can agree with these days, like stop bothering with the middle eastern countries for resources when that ends up just wasting lives on all sides.

If getting rid of Cavil means also getting rid of Gal Gadot, it is a worthy trade. But he was good in the role and past few years since Superman his public reputation has went up, don't think they was much baggage to using him again unless you called the movie Man of Steel 2 and very much could have done a fresh start to the ip while still using him.

Now if they get rid of Jason Momoa as Aquaman that is a dumb move, the first movie of that went on to make over $1billion even after the shit show which was Justice League. Is rumors they want him to play Lobo, but honestly no reason he can't do both if they keep Lobo looking like he did in the comics.

Black Adam will be gone, and if they make a third Shazam they will just use Mister Mind as the villain. Note Peter Safran the other half of the new DC leader ship was the producer on the Shazam films (also Aquaman, The Suicide Squad and Blue Beetle but not Black Adam), so doubt they will up and get rid of that series unless the second one flops

What a waste of a mid-credit scene in Black Adam after Dwayne Johnson hyped Henry Cavill's return. Now the Aquaman sequel looks to be pointless if James Gunn is doing a hard reboot.

I never got the hype for that guy. His Suicide Squad just came off as an edgier Guardians to me and I had no interest in Peacemaker since that looked to be more of the same.

You have to look at it from WB/DC perspective. That mid-credit sequence may have single handedly saved Black Adam from being a complete flop (emphasis on complete, it's still losing money I'm pretty sure).

If the movie manages to just break even, it won't be a waste for them. I'm guessing it either *just* hit that mark for this decision to be made public, or that they've realized milked as much money as they can from it.

Absolute fucking bullshit. James Gunn is either a self obessed moron who wants to put his stamp on the verse or he's activatly sabotaging DC like Joss Whedon did for justice league.

Stunning coincidence how the two guys transplanted from marvel end up fucking everything and everyone over.

Oh and yes we will be getting a black superman movie and a white superman movie, yes we will not commit to having black adam fight superman, zack snyder is gone, the flash is fucking pointless billion dollar mess of a movie, Aquaman is gonna be lobo for some dumbass reason.

but We got blue beetle and patterson batman so yayyyy its all okkk. Fuck off.

Betrayal of the highest order. They learned nothing.
