Se7en rules. I would fucking love a Fincher directed Batman movie. or a Fincher Question or Martian Manhunter might be cool too. any more investigative type characters. I don't love all of his movies, but his style is always on point even if the movie is just whatever. hell, I'd like a dark investigative reporting focused Superman movie. for business reasons it wouldn't make sense but I've always thought you could easily make a super dark as fuck Superman movie, just where nothing about himself is, just whatever it is he's dealing with is some serious horrifying stuff. whenever there is dark superman shit a lot of the time the issue with it is they make him that way, when if it was the opposite it would be fine. you can make him get serious as hell if he needs to without losing the character. his best stories tend to be that way in the first place.
I'm just so over the ironic self aware humor shit. we get it, it's inherently goofy, so what? all I have ever wanted out of these superhero adaptations are them to just play it straight. it doesn't have to be miserable, just take it seriously. the nolan movies are serious but there is a lot of levity at least in the first two. none of it is gut busting hilarious but some of it is legitimately kinda funny and it keeps them from being miserable to sit through. this is my biggest fear with gunn at the helm is it's going to spend way too much time goofing on shit. yeah he's got a super dog too, so what? it's seriously not any dumber at all than there being a planet galaxies away with aliens that look exactly like humans who get powers under our sun and one being sent away and crashes in kansas to be raised by nice old people, them having dogs there is just as ridiculous, if they just played it straight it really isn't that big of a deal and you can get some levity out of the dog doing ridiculous shit like them playing fetch with a whole ass tree or something but the movie is going to be filled with other human characters making self aware one liners about the dog. I don't have a problem with dropping us into a lived in world with other superheroes already, I like that. what I don't like is that the approach is going to be he doesn't fit in with them and they are going to be clowning on him and take up a shitload of the movie.
I don't understand what is so fucking hard about just doing a superman story or whatever. everything has to be an aware winking at the audience thing, or some sort of retarded commentary about the character's place in the world. just make a fuckin movie. the problem with most movies these days (and comics) is everybody has to have a fuckin take instead of just making something in the vein of whatever it is. even The Batman, which I didn't love but liked well enough suffered from this problem where the movie is about Batman's role and place in the world by the end, just make a movie where Batman is Batman and does, Batman shit. what's so fucking hard about that? if it isn't a mediocre comedy or self parody like a lot of the MCU basically is, it's always some meta commentary shit. just fucking do a story where the character does what they should be doing. stop pretending to be smarter than you are or pointing out how dumb it is like you, the creator of the movie is above making what you made when you make these things and just make an entertaining 2 hours. it would go a long way at this point to just see a cut and dry superhero flick with competent characters in a competent plot having a traditional adventure because we never get that.
