The real answer is that Japan did not have the puritanical influence that America had from the start. And no, of course I'm not trying to say CP is only for puritans to hate, I'm just saying that those kinds of built-in revulsions are based on that kind of stuff. America outsourced the "18 or older rule" to other countries where before their AoC was much younger (and good on them), but they didn't have that rule often enough before that.

As a weeb, we generally treat these people as harmless annoyances. Where or not we should is another question, but they're almost never taken seriously. Also we were all bullied as kids so it's hard for the anime zeitgeist to exclude anyone unless they start hinting they're into the hard stuff.

What confuses me is when I found out I had a debate thread and the title I was expecting some actual wrong-doing I would have to defend myself against. I didn't do anything wrong in those OP posts.

I wouldn't call it fence-sitting. I believe, in my heart of hearts, that there is no way a guy jacking it to illustrations of minors can be as bad as someone who attacks kids. Unless they do both, in which case fuck those people. But until there's actual proof that they are an acting pedophile (or watch CP, it's just as bad), I'm unwilling to call them a pedophile. Regardless of the textbook definition of the word, when people think of a pedo, they think of someone trying to attack kids or watch porn of it. Full stop. It's not the same thing.

Furthermore, I am employed by the government to copy digital evidence for further review by digital forensics specialists. You work with these people long enough, they open up to you. They are very frustrated with the amount of lolicons whose phones get added to their evidence pile. They have to examine the evidence, and waste their time on that while actual CP cases get shoved down the pile. And I hope to one day work as a digital forensics specialists to stop these pedophiles from hurting more kids.

It wasn't discord, this was the late 2000s to early 2010s. It wasn't anywhere near as bad as kids have it today.
