Costa Rica and Panama look fine to me.

It's not authoritarianism, it's neoclassical economics. For current examples, see Singapore and Switzerland. One is an authoritarian city-state, the other is a liberal democratic federation with high local autonomy. Both are prosperous. What do they have in common? Both subscribe to neoclassical economical models.

Strong disagreement re Franco, but for him Spain would have gone hard left even communist.

Singapore is one of my favorite societies in the modern age. Ordered society for the benefit of its citizenry. They don't fuck around with graffiti or the drug trade.

Wait we're seriously debating the subhuman-ness of people now? I thought that was something we fought against in the civil rights movement (American I mean), what with some people believing blacks were less human than whites. That's what I recall from high school history lessons anyway.

We have enough data points about what Communists do to a country to establish a trend. Pinochet executed a fair number of Communists, but he didn't plunge his country into poverty, purge entire populations, or tear apart the basic fabric of society in order to build a fear-cult of loyalty to the insane, apocalyptic visions of a fat, filthy, 19th-century rapist.

Being better than Communism is an insanely low bar, one that only the Nazis were unable to clear.

Nazi's were not only human, but they were the only humans in history. Every other group of "people" were and are sub-humans
