One thing that’s cliche but is still salient is getting older.

I was doing some work some time ago, and it dawned on me that to young people in middle school and high school today, I would be out of touch.

To be fair, I’m not “that” old but I’m not as energetic as I used to be. As you get older, you start to reflect on youth-less as something real and immediate, but as something lost. And mine is gone.

Men live shorter lives than women, and too our credit-they are usually much better lives. But they are so short, it’s humbling to know, I’m not going to live forever.

I’m going to get old, and die one day. Every year, every day is one step closer.

It is sobering.

Bro, it's like 6% difference and even most of that is men's propensity for doing more dangerous things rather than a difference in natural lifespan. You make it sound like men are mayflies compared to women.

I was out of touch with youth culture when I was IN middle school and high school. I highly recommend it - kids are fucking retarded and no one should value their opinions.

I don’t disagree, but I am going into teaching. So it behooves me to be “in touch” at least superficially.

Men die unnatural deaths much more frequently-men lead more risky and often more interesting and dangerous lives.

Honestly guys who project to this extent are always the men who make the world an unpleasant place. The kind of men they compare themselves to are far too humble to speak this way and that’s how they do so much good - humility. They don’t need to put women down as less human to build their confidence.

This is just an exercise in self-indulgent moral masturbation and an excuse to drown out that insecure voice in their head’s by attempting some good ole self-righteous smuggery on the empty headed ladyfolk.

The thing with young people today is, you'd be out of touch? With what exactly? There isn't some universal culture that young people are any more in touch with than any of us (I'm going to assume you're ~30 at the oldest). As bad as it is, they're lifting most of their understanding of the world from the same internet we're using right now and which we grew up with.

What are they going to do, make fun of you because you don't use tiktok? The only thing that arises from that is fragmented trends.

I think these days with how directionless things have become there's this pervasive myth of youth and aging and what it's all supposed to mean, and it's all based off half-baked understanding of history in a world that doesn't exist anymore. It's just people desperately trying to orient themselves.

Sometimes I linger into thought about it, but at this point I have no fucking idea what's going on anymore in the world or life, so I don't even bother thinking that hard about what is or what's supposed to be. There's no point. You just are.

Plus as much capacity as people these days have to fuck themselves up, there's a great capacity to take control of your health and longevity. Our level of resources and available understanding are unprecedented, if a person is willing to take advantage of it.

Yes, you are closer to death, that's an unavoidable truth, but eh, what's life anyways?

I don’t think I “put women down” in this thread? Women have some psychological benefits over men, and an easier time dealing with existential considerations(largely because they don't have them).

To be a man connotes certain expectations, norms and demands that are actually challenging, and a man’s worth in his own eyes and the world is in whether he meets them or not. Men struggle with the coldness of life and the pitiless scoresheet that is his own conscience, this causes men a great deal of distress and pain-regardless of how they express it or not.

I’m genuinely surprised that people have misunderstood this, because it’s neither offensive nor a put down, it’s not even a particularly radical or charged take. It’s just a cold fact.
