Back when the thunderdome had a limited set of stickers I did not think that was accomplishing the goal it was intended to achieve. I preferred having them back in full. I found it just encouraged people to engage with the bait posters and thread derailers by shitting up the threads far in excess of what could be considered entertaining or engaging. I think the reading and discussion experience was worse off for that. (Then again I haven't paid the thunderdome much mind since the attack of the trans, maybe nothing's any different). I think a big driver behind the thunderdome bitching is an intent to wear Null down to delete it all. Despite all the headache for Null, the discussion of current events as they happen is a legitametly valuable service both today and looking back at the facts, speculation, thoughts, and raw emotions as a historical record. Quite a few of the happenings threads are worthy of preservation in themselves (COVID threads and the Floyd riots come to mind).
People sharing their dumb thoughts are going to get called dumb and it's much less tiresome and tedious to allow the option to communicate that in an unobtrusive and nondisruptive manner. As for a user who only gives stickers and never comments; "I agree with you" and "You are dumb" go against the "Don't post if you have nothing to say" rule. Stickers don't matter and I'd much rather have sticker cry babies get some form of corrective action than remove the option that allows the neg rater to get their dopamine hit without shitting up the thread.
The only complaint I have about stickers is that the highlight system intentionally shows negative reacted content that I'm usually trying to skip over in a heavily derailed thread. I've never found any negative highlights to be particularly funny or enlightening except maybe on Tommy Tooter's own posts, and usually I can get the context from someone quoting his posts later anyway.
