You can’t really make a blanket statement about the aesthetic value of beards because it depends on so many factors — face/head shape, cleanliness of the beard, thickness, and so forth. If you have a weak chin and jaw, beard will almost always be better than no beard. If you have a middling facial structure, beard is probably going to be better but it depends. If you have a very strong jaw and chin, you’re going to look good either way so it doesn’t really matter. A gross and unkempt beard will never look good.
I have a beard most of the time because I hate shaving and my skin is sensitive, so I’m better off just using a trimmer. I maintain it enough that it doesn’t look unclean or scraggly.
