The parts of all this i'm having the biggest issue with (not problem over how it's being handled, but serious issue with) is that medical research was included in the funding freeze. It scares me because a lot of libertardian types are against such funding. With the argument that it should be up to private market to decide, that if it doesn't see an economic justification for the research then it isn't worth it. Which is utter lunacy! It isn't even just about new drugs, but treatments and research on illnesses in general.. Something private industry is horrible at out of sheer lack of caring. These people don't understand that private business usually just doesn't do general research on things, and that such research is what eventually allows private business to create what they do. Even in the best case, a temp pause could lead to a major disruption in research, a forced reshuffling or even refocusing by researchers. Lasting years.

So this whole thing amounts to members of a discord he's connected with, likely an internet slap fight, when he was 16 and not even there/online.

You can get EVS access from SSA if you have money and time, that's what e-Verify uses. Or you can get a subscription from the identity verification service your choosing like LexisNexis or Equifax. Reminds me when my grand parents and parents would warn me that there was an extra strong cold going around this winter and more people would die than average or get quite ill, then recover. I've not seen anything showing that COVID was different in any way.

There are countless of federal, state, local, and private systems that use SSNs. They don't talk to each other, and no one has access to all of them. The DOGE boys can't do what you propose.

So why can’t they just run the death file against active SSNs and see what comes up? Or take one system that uses SSNs and just look at that. Like a sampling? Cleaning everything up isn’t goal one, that would be finding our IS there a problem and WHAT is it if it exists? Even going the other way - pick out a random sampling of x% of those SSNs from impossibly old people. Are any being used? Even if they have to check multiple databases that’s doable: it’s asking them ‘please check if any of the following numbers are active in your database.’ If no then the issue is more likely to be just not taking people off.
If they find ex-SSNs that are being used, and there are people here who say they have experience of that, then they again need to pick a small sample and trace them back. When did it happen? How? Why weren’t they taken off? What’s the cross check with that death file and where is it failing? Or did it not fail but get resolved? Check the audit trail logs - who approved it?
Other countries manage to have cohesive records of the population register - even if they have to go state by state this is doable, surely? It’s a bit of forensics and a bit of database wrangling .

One of the few arguments for more government is oversight into the free market. I'd imagine a healthcare version of the CFPB, if we're stuck with the god awful system of healthcare now, targeting fraud at every level of the insurance industry would be quite popular as well. The ironic thing is that if there were politicians who did their jobs, big government wouldn't be as necessary, as they'd be writing basic laws (with no loopholes/carveouts) that make it black & white what is and isn't legal.

Whatever you think of government, bloated, not bloated enough, shouldn't exist, I don't think you can ever really make an argument that says "less oversight = good", whether that's an agency or Congress. Or at the very least, oversight in areas where it's historically been an issue (banking) and maybe not where there's no evidence of fraud (9/11 responders getting benefits).
