It speaks of political subterfuge, but moreso, people that never went to a museum or opened a history book. They just believe the simplest narrative told to them. They don't think the context at the time, none of that. Yeah slavery bad. It was a big part of the war. It wasn't the only part. It was proportionally the bloodiest conflict that America has been in. Brother against brother in many cases. Simplifying it to either "slavery bad" or "states rights" is idiotic. It had multiple reasons as to why it kicked off and decades of build up.I mean yeah but that narrative doesn’t work as well for neoliberals to use to morally grandstand about how the morally superior good fellows in Washington heroically stomped out those backwards racist peons in the south to free the poor innocent little negros (make sure they remember that so they vote for us btw). Which for some reason got popular among Breadtubers ostensibly further left than the DNC (who those Breadtubers just so happen to be funded by), despite this new neoliberal narrative contradicting most previous far-left narratives about the Civil War.
This is why I genuinely can't listen to Dev much any more, especially when he talks about America. He doesn't understand it. He doesn't understand why someone would still wave a confederate flag. Sometimes people want to be rebellious. And while its a dead movement, the symbol and legacy remains. To him it just means your racist. To the person waving it, its a symbol of telling the government to go fuck itself.
