I don't understand why. As best I can figure, he thinks he's owning a tiny segment of his audience and the rest of his audience will look on in approval.

He might be right, but it doesn't look like it. The video has an OK number of likes (4% of views isn't terrible), but about 50% as many dislikes which is pretty bad. Some in the comments do seem to think it's funny, but most really are just the meme of "fuck off Dev" with a few replies being "jokes on them, your anger is what makes it funny".

I'm sure he'd give some response about how he's avoiding audience capture and he does what he wants and fuck you rightoids you don't own me.... But this just seems antagonistic, unnecessary, and a significant miss.

I know this is coming out of a weird snipe fest, but I find this to be an interesting question. I don't know that it was 2015, but it really does feel like April Fool's jokes just stopped being funny in recent times.

I can think of a few reasons. I got older so maybe my perspective shifted. There's been an over saturation with every internet content creator putting out April Fool's jokes, not to mention the excessive escalation of YouTube and TikTok "prank" videos. And with that over saturation it feels like people just gave up on the jokes and now they're all low effort trash. In the case of Dev, it's definitely low effort trash, though that's probably the majority of the general problem as well.

I used to save web pages back in the day because their pranks were actually good. Blizzard used to be famous for them. Now every April Fools joke is just some low effort "hur dur, here's the opposite of my usual opinion" low effort video. They aren't fun in their own right, and aren't really tricks to fool those that should know better.

I doubt I'm the first person to say this, but he rightly shit on the likes of Total Biscuit and Spoony back in the day for turning against their audience, but he's doing the exact same now. I don't know if it was trucker video or the CHAZ video where he made the Spoony reference "it's in the render que".
