Dexter: Original SIn is a prequel to the original series and book by Jeff Lindsay(if you like the show read his books, id argue theyre better), New blood had such promise yet they fumbled with how they chose to depict Robert Hansen a lot of real world horror was lost,
for those who can only watch Dexter if its Michael C hall, he does the inner voice, Its already surpassed Dexter: Fargo. they did the smart thing not dumping every episode at once.
when this show ends the next will be back to Michael C hall as Dexter.
these must no longer be canon since the current show diverged from the animated shorts, but theyre really good:

As bad as the show got after the first season, the books are absolute dog shit.
i disagree, i loved Robo Doakes in the books, how the author ties the passenger back to an ancient Babylonian god, how could you not love the absurdity of the cannibals in DEXTER IS DELICIOUS, the 7th and final book i would love to see adapted in some form the neat twist with book 7 is a law and order type show but shot in Miami shoots near the real thing the actors also study and stick too who theyre meant to be playing.

Showtime made a massive mistake not following up New Blood with the sequel following Harrison after the death of Dexter to do this series and Dexter: Resurrection.

It's porn parody levels of imitation from everybody involved. The biggest thing is that they miss how the characters were portrayed in flashbacks. Deb in flashbacks was this overly sensitive girl that had to put up a tough front to fit in with her hardboiled cop dad and emotionally dead brother. Dexter in flashbacks was a sociopath whiteknuckling normalcy.

Original Sin has Dexter as an autist and Deb as a brash whore. They've lost the fronts.

Original sin has been pretty great so far with one episode left. Of course, Dexter has failed to stick the landing twice now, so here's hoping third times the charm.

I liked it better than new blood. The pace is more similar to the original series. New blood was mostly insufferable drama.

I've been meaning to check it out. I loved the book, loved the original series more and I actually enjoyed new blood but there's something very off putting about the actor they chose to portray Dexter in OS. Everytime I start the ep I lose interest. I think it's just me being obstinate and not giving it a fair chance.

Some of the original actors on Dexter were so super thin that it's funny seeing the new actors playing the characters' younger selves. Deb in particular, the actress in this show is still crazy skinny but I call her "Fat Deb".

Also, I put on a Batista voice and say, "Dexter, one day I will be big and fat" to make my wife laugh because all of the dumb references like LaGuerta fucking Muppet Babies Jimmy Smits and saying, "He's loco, he thinks he'll be District Attorney someday."

Also also, 70s flashback Christian Slater is 1000% his Jack Nicholson impression. The show's as dumb as original Dexter, I liked a lot of New Blood but it got really try-hard.

Working my way through a re-watch of Dexter since it first aired. It was once my favourite show, but now on Season 3 and the unconscious distaste for this season comes across much more clearly. In S1 dexter was just the blood splatter guy who occasionally helped out beyond analysing blood trajectories with some sperg insight. Season 2 it takes him half the season to get directly involved with the Bay Harbour Butcher case, and that is only because Masuka was pissing off Lundy by being a sexpest. Now on season 3, in the first episode this Spic is hogging the spotlight cause of Smitz' name, and in episode two 5 minutes in Lagurta and him are talking and out of no where he goes "MORGAN!" like Dexter is just so fucking important. Then couple scenes later he literally appears and asks Dexter to come over to his house and be best friends. I'm gonna watch up to Trinity then skip to the Finale, having bailed midway through season 7 back in the day.

As for this new season; watched 5 minutes and hated many things, liked some, but couldn't get over the smirking. Had to know if Michael C. Hall was smirking so much, and this question brought me to the re-watch.

Not watching this bc I’ll go psychotic over this show again but they seriously retconned Harry abandoning Brian? Seriously? Now he actually tried to adopt Brian but he was too far gone (and tried to kill Deb) so he gave him up? Really?

The obsession the writers have with trying to make Harry a good person really drags the show down. The first, and best, season had his image slowly torn down and it assisted Dexter’s crisis of identity well. But the writers really want this angel and devil on the shoulder dynamic with ghost harry and the dark passenger that drags on forever. Having Harry and Brian represent opposite approaches to the same philosophical belief is way more interesting. Both of them think that Dexter is incapable of change and must kill, and that idea was somewhat rejected over the course of the season with Dex becoming more emotional and the flaws in his dad and brother becoming more and more apparent. The season ends with him choosing his emotional attachments over killing, it’s clear where things could have headed and it would have kept the show much more fresh. But they’re so attached to this stupid idea of making Harry a paragon of virtue that they’re retconning the first season so that the retard redditors who watch this can now reply to any argument about Harry with “erm aschwally he DID try to adopt Brian” There’s a reason the place that popularized the discovery that some people don’t have internal monologues was the fucking dexter subreddit.

I hate that I love this show so much.

He probably is still a marine. Hope we get a time jump between seasons and we get Doakes. Because he was one of my favorite characters.
That sounds like a good idea. I, personally, would prefer the time jump after Season 2, and they start Season 3 post-time jump, but your idea would be unorthodox, and unorthodox gets people talking.
