Yeah, I debated including that part or not. It emphasizes how hard it is to actually die in Oz. It also kind of implies his girlfriend is kind of a bitch since Tin Woodman still had the same personality he used to have, but she'd rather date a guy made up of Frankensteined body parts because he isn't metal.

You know, the more I check out the Disney adult fandom, the more appropriate name for the fandom should be "Disneybots".
Why Disneybots? Well, it's simple.
Like Enterbots of children's show communities, Disneybots almost all have the toxic hivemind mentality, where they all love and hate the same Disney films, and get all toxic, as well as berserk, over casual fans having (gasp) UNPOPULAR OPINIONS on their films. They think that those fans just hate things that are just popular and are jealous, when that is usually not the case.
For example:
If it is furry bait, Disney Princess/Frozen waifu material, Disneybots will eat it all up with no questions asked.
If it is dark, edgy, or un-Disney-like of Disney, such as The Black Cauldron, Return to Oz, or Chicken Little, Disneybots have a psycho hate boner over them.
To be fair,I am give or take on Chicken Little, but IMO, it is not the worst Disney film ever, let alone, not the worst animated film ever, for that matter. IMO, those direct to video TV pilots disguised as sequels and prequels are even worse IMO.
I just cannot help, but to get a laugh at the Disney waifu crowd, who simp for IMAGINARY GIRLFRIENDS. Something tells me they are ex-weeaboos and ex-gamers that got kicked out of the gaming, anime, and manga communities, for being too cringey, even for them, to deal with.

Never understood the hate for The Black Cauldron. Supposedly, it's not accurate to the books it came from, but on its own I feel it was a very solid film with a consistent tone, gorgeous animation, backgrounds and character designs. Always loved how the Horned King looked for some reason in particular.
Hell, they even made pretty effective use of the comic relief character by having him take the fall and save pretty much everyone.

Katzenberg took his scissors to the film and snipped out twelve minutes or so. That had never been done on a Disney film before, so it's no surprise the animators weren't happy with what was released.

I have it directly from animators who worked on Black Cauldron that the project was a train wreck from start to finish. Executives decided when the project started that they were smart enough to handle the writing for the film instead of, y'know, hiring writers, which explains them axing huge snippets of film. Some of this was shit that was already being inked and colored or fully inked and colored. These guys talk about it like it's a Vietnam flashback.
Ahh, another troubled production.

I love Wreck-It-Ralph, but the best non-branded Disney Princess has to go to the Hot Topic goth gf.
Honestly, considering Monster High’s popularity, kinda surprised Disney never capitalized on her by making her a part of any brand. I know she has tons of merch, but you get what I mean. The funniest part is that she would fit as technically her relation to Jack makes her royalty if Jack’s Pumpkin King title means anything.
Speaking of which, @Kari Kamiya, I believe you said you were getting the Nightmare spin-off book earlier in the thread? How bad did they butcher the girl?

To be fair, Burton was busy during the making of Nightmare as he was held up by Batman Returns, so the extent of how much he worked on the film is pretty debatable. The thing about Burton is that he can create amazing visuals, but he kinda sucks at story. Nightmare benefitted heavily from him just making the designs and giving a general template. The same goes for many of Burton’s classics. Batman 1989 didn’t allow him to go all out quite like Returns, which honestly made the film a lot better. I believe BeetleJuice was more or less passed down to him as he could direct it well, but it was a pre-made narrative, or at least one with more heads on the team. Those success gave him more control of products and as such quality dipped as no one was there to reel him in.
As a side tangent, since Nightmare is in conversation, anyone notice an increasing backlash towards the film. I swear I am starting to see more reviewers and Disney fans giving it shit for flat characters, especially towards Oogie Boogie being a poor villain because he lacks le tragic backstory or motive? I feel like many are missing the point of this film being a homage to Frankenbass, thus being very simple. Also, if it was more complex, it would probably kill the film as the current flow is flawless and explains weird abstract concepts very well.

Good lord, the emo woobie blob villain trope needs to DIE! In the most painful way possible.
I'm glad Oogie Boogie is a good old over the top Disney villain, instead of a woobie blob for once. I miss those kind of villains, a lot.

People just want to add more depth than needed, even if it isn’t for sympathy. I blame the video games, even if generally good, for making people want more out of Oogie. They acted as unnecessary sequels/prequels that added just a smidge more info for people to latch onto. I think people want to see a more in-depth look into bug day and why Oogie was banished, but honestly, who cares?
The film we got was intentionally simple and worked due to it. People complain because the simple film is too simple. Doug Walker was a big pusher of it being to simple, but even he caved to admit it was for the better.

People just try to add way more depth than there ever was then get disappointed when said depth isn’t fully explored by the work.

I finished reading Wild Minds: The Artists and Rivalries that Inspired the Golden Age of Animation the other day, and am now working my way through a lot of the early Disney cartoons of note.
Some of this stuff is real eye-opening, because although I'd always heard of these movies, they were never what was really at the front of my mind. Apparently most of what I knew was "Revival Era" Disney, long after Disney himself died, and the early stuff is so much more interesting.
I didn't find all of Fantasia interesting to watch, but what was amazing was the Nutcracker Suite and Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria, the Nutcracker Suite has a great way of subtly anthropomorphizing plants and beautiful motion (the pixies move just like fish) and trippy visuals, Night on Bald Mountain is intense, and the Ave Maria sequence feels like a mystical/spiritual experience. The other stuff isn't stuff I'd rewatch but those are incredible.
Saludos Amigos has some really good stuff.
What I really loved was The Three Caballeros, just one of the most fun, positive things I've ever seen, I really like Latin cultures and music (I play bossa nova on saxophone a fair bit) and the crazy stuff with the Caballeros interacting with people (like Roger Rabbit decades early) and the trippy dances and all that is just magical.

Three Caballeros gave me a better appreciation for Mexico and its culture. A far better take on Latin America than the time Disney showed farmers how to build outhouses.
