Yeah, "classic" Mickey (i.e. before Walt turned him into the everyman most people these days are familiar with) loses copyright protections soon.

Steamboat Willie will be fair use soon, the only issue is that these exist:

Disney has been reverting Mickey back to the old style. Not 100% sure about this, but the benefit to designing like this is that these count as new versions Disney can claim the rights to. Even if Steamboat Willie becomes public domain, the similarities between it and the new version can probably work in Disney's favor. Anyone who uses the old design could be struck in court for being too similar to the new.

Isn't that why they've had that logo with a short animated bit of Steamboat Willie? Something about how logos have different rules or something.
 
When was the last time Mickey was in a movie beyond a cameo again? Was it the three musketeers one 20ish years ago or was there something else that came out more recently. Actually come to think of it mickey never had his own cartoon on the same level as Goofy (Goof Troop) and Donald (Ducktales) did during the late 80s to early 90s did he. I vaguely recall one where he had a nightclub or something that play host to every animated character in the vault I think I liked when I was young, but I can hardly remember it.

My understanding was that Mickey's imagery is so closely connected to the Disney Corporation it would be protected as a trade mark. Someone could make a Mickey Mouse cartoon, but it couldn't be one where the look could be confused with the Disney version. Or at least this is what Disney would try and argue.

Hes had a show that was decent fairly recently. I think Disney is wrapping it up though.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse was masssive too.
 
Disney's motion to dismiss the Florida case about their chimp-out when DeSantis passed in their teapot has been DENIED. There's some pretty based language in the dismissal, I'll try and find it later when I'm not on my phone.

There's still a couple of motions up in the air, the biggest one is to remove DeSantis as a party, but that's pretty irrelevant, except for stalling. The long and short of it is that this WILL go to discovery, so we should be seeing some entertaining Disney sausage-making in the next year or so.

His "Season 3" content is not that good. The first few videos are of him explaining shit that happened very long time ago and you can tell on certain topics he has a certain disgust in his voice when describing things that are "problematic" at least in today's clown world times.

The FastPass video he made was very informative, and i liked his Jim Henson documentaries, but otherwise I'd rather just watch his pre-season 3 stuff.

Mickey is still relevant, last Friday he got a new video game with Island of Illusion.

TV wise, Mickey has had two series since 2013 being Mickey Mouse and The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse, both of which used a 40s era design. There was also the previously mentioned House of Mouse you are referring to along with the Mickey Mouse Club House on Disney Jr, both of which are 2000s.

On the video game front, there was the Epic Mickey series in the early 2010s and the Castle of Illusion sequel on 3DS. There was also Disney Infinity, Disney Speedstorm, Disney Zhum Zhum Party, Dreamlight Valley, Magical World, etc..

Outside of films, Mickey has been pretty active, I think we just lose track as people focus more on Disney's other ventures and acquisitions.

only guy who's videos I really like consistently is Martin
I suspect the fact he doesn't put himself in them in any real capacity helps a lot
 

So apparently Haunted Mansion 2023 has had a bad box office opening and I found another reason why it isn't doing well besides bad advertising. And this quote from the article from above will tell you why:


"Coming 20 years after Eddie Murphy’s “Haunted Mansion,” the new film features a scary good cast with LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Rosario Dawson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Jared Leto and more."

But wait, it gets worse, because here is a little bit of the plot in tweet form, that shows that Disney hasn't learn nothing from the 2003 version.

This is unbelievably dumb. Isn't the appeal of something haunted that real people are in it? They wanted to have a hauned house but 0 references or even insinuations to slavery so instead of the dead people being slaves they're just there just because.

At that point why even set it at a planation house???
 
Disney's Iger lures back former executives as advisors
Specifically the former Direct-to-Consumer & International executive Keven Mayer and former CFO and COO Thomas Staggs.

This came out yesterday and is probably gonna be used to pad out the next earnings call, iirc Staggs was the heir apparent for bob back in 2016 but don't know exactly know why he and Mayer left in the first place or what exactly they've been up to in the years since.

Rule of thumb, you need x2 your budget to break even before marketing is even accounted for because cinemas take half, and marketing doubles the budget for a total of x4.

Elemental needs to make 600mil mil before it will be profitable. Even if we're generous and assume the marketing was lower its still 500 mil and that is just to break even.

You mean 3 times its budget depending on marketing, the rule is 2 to 3 times its budget depending on marketing spend, using 4 times it would need to make 800m to make money. Elemental budget is $200 million if it grosses on the higher end of the projections it may break even or make a small profit however that is far from 100%.

The movie right now is at $396,485,426, so still a flop but it has impressive legs for how bad its opening weekend

tl;dr

Just, halve the box office and double (or at least x1.5) the budget to see if a film is profitable.

Elemental needs 400 mil to break even before marketing, and then depending on how much they spent on marketing, ranging from 450 mil to 600.
