What amuses me about the Starcruiser Hotel is that there was no attempt to appeal to trivia nerds like me. I don't care for roleplaying whatsoever (I'm horrible when it comes to imagination & acting). What I do love though is history and behind the scenes stuff. I was at the National Air & Space Museum when they had a special exhibit for Star Wars and I was in nerd jubilation to see Vader's costume behind glass.

If you're making a nerd hotel dedicated to Star Wars why wouldn't you have a portion of the building dedicated to that. How many thousands of props must Disney have now from 3 decades of Star Wars movies? You know how happy I'd be to see original X-Wing and Tie Fighter models or the Death Star? I'd be interested in seeing the Baby Yoda puppet and the Mandalorian gear.
Would it have damaged the precious roleplaying to recognize that Star Wars is a media franchise of fiction? IMO you could have had two separate experiences for visitors, the roleplaying stuff and a film nerd experience. I still wouldn't have gone but that would have greatly broadened the appeal. I'm imagining not only the authentic props & costumes but some decent recreations of iconic sets, I wouldn't care for the Starcruiser's generic bar but I would enjoy seeing a bar inspired by the Mos Eisley Cantina, I would get a picture of myself Soijaking hard over that shit as the iconic music played in the background.

I know for certain I'm not crazy because the Universal Studios I grew up visiting featured a lot of filmmaking stuff so clearly that has appeal. RIP Backdraft The Attraction it was cool to learn about pyrotechnics. I always loved when the show would finish and all the mechanical props would move back into their original positions for the next audience.

It's not a good movie (if only because I believe Awkwafina is just that godawful),

Now, I didn't find her voice work even remotely offensive in this particular case. In KFP4 she did her part of the job decently, but she was given a role and a script that even the most brilliant VA of all time could not have carried. Zhen being a bland character with no arc - in a movie where she was the main protagonist around whose development everything revolved - was determined not even by dialogue writers. but by the main script. Someone more talented probably could have liven up the role with more imaginative verbal quirks, but the key problem was on a higher level.

Oh yeah, that one interview gave us a peek into the development of the movie, like apparently they had to scrap character ideas I think to make the plot(?) move faster. It's a really bizarre choice, I don't know if that was China-induced or Chris Meledandri's choice.

Even if Zhen had an actual personality and character arc, she still would've suffered by being voiced by Awkwafina. Think her bland performance just helped to emphasize the issues with the character. Even Po didn't seem like himself, but that just might be because he couldn't bounce off of her personality.

I think had they not made Zhen a female, I would've just shrugged it off. Her character model isn't even all that feminine to begin with, was honestly distracting.

Because they neutered him so Akwafina's character could look better. Shitting on the old good stuff (usually male protagonists) to prop up the new shitty stuff (usually female protagonists) has been happening for more than a decade now. No one should really be surprised by this phenomena at this point.

Po didn't seem any less powerful than he was in the previous movie, but you're right that the movie was more about Zhen than it was about him.

They turned him into a bubbling buffoon that no one respected and openly shit on his legacy. You don't need to nerf power levels to neuter characters.

His first scene in the movie is saving people from the manta ray and them cheering for him. That's followed up by everyone in his village lining up in front of the restaurant to see him and get an autograph. Of course no one's going to respect him in a place where they've never heard of the Dragon Warrior, that's just common sense.

I hate when people say "streaming is just like cable" like how retarded are you? It costs $20 a month just to have 1 cable box. Plus the lack of commercials or at least the option to not have commercials as well as not having to rely on a tv guide means streaming kicks ass. Its not the 90s when all you needed was a cord and you got cable, you have to pay $20 per cable box as well as fees for every package and $22 just for the sports channels. If you don't watch ESPN 3 then you're paying $500 a year for 0 content. at least with streaming your guaranteed something for your money, and if you're spending $500 a year you're getting every streaming channel you can name
If they closed up shop after Toy Story 3 they would be Golden.
they basically did, they had to divide the staff in two when disney animation studios decided to jump into 3d animated films like pixar too, if you notice the string of successes jumps from pixar to disney animation around the same time too, literally toy story 3 to tangled and nonstop Ws the rest of the decade, then Disney+ destroyed the kids genre in terms of box office.
into an animated series
on the DVD special features of the original Incredibles they basically parody such a concept and the main conceit is still true today: the quality would be fucking garbage if they tried it. just look at the clone wars, just in general there's a reason tv cartoons still are made in 2d vs 3d.
. 'I told them I’d commit harikari first,' he told them."
i love old school animators, they treat their job making childrens films like its the pacific theater of ww2.

Forget it Jake, it's Disneyland. Disney has hitched its star so firmly to the ST that they'll never give you the OT and PT experiences that you want. Just look up "Planet Coaster Star Wars" on Youtube and you'll see 17 year old nerds in their parent's basements making up better Star Wars themed parks than Disney's Starcruiser and Galaxy's edge.

A central hub hotel where people could relax , shop, and take in the Star Wars ambiance would have worked perfectly. Why not base it off of Cloud City, a location already filled with lore and intrigue? Then guests could book "excursions" that take them to other parts of the park based on other locations. Visit Tattooine and look at a pod race. Get invited to Jabba the Hutt's palace and watch a rancor fight. Take a dark ride tour of the Death Star. Go to a Jedi Temple and train. Pretend to be some kind of space tourist who gets to see the various locations within Star Wars. Keep the roleplay elements simple and limit them to group led events that you can sign up for, or phone games with interactive environments. All of this would have been a lot cheaper than the Starcruiser, and it would have had lots of "replay value." Guests could have done things at their own pace, choosing either to engage in an activity, or relax in the pool or shop. I imagine Disney could have made a pretty penny selling costumes and costume makeovers to visitors. Just imagine a formal ball where everyone has to dress up in formal spacewear and costumed actors went around making it seem more real. I could see hardcore fans easily plunking down 1000 dollars a night for a luxury experience. Even people who want to just daytrip to the Star Wars park would probably spend hundreds there per day and happily do it.

All of this seems like a no brainer. Imagine leaving billions on the table because you really want to cram your pet Star Wars fanfiction down people's throats and want to give them the least amount of experience for the most amount of their money. Disney should have just put all of their money in a big pile and let it on fire "to send a message".

Not really. Rather, they've forced them into the role of the straight man of the pair, which Jack Black was unsuited for. And with very little transition. Po is only his normal self when he interacts with Shifu.

Basically KFP4 was all-around poorly written, and, like its main villain, had nothing to offer except what it took from its betters.

You can fucking taste it in the air that some blue hair wants to push the "Riley is a troon" button. I think they will and just double down, I have a free ticket to see it I cannot wait to see how shit its going to be.
I still believe Pixar wants to go full through in it while Disney will reign them away. They'll probably just throw a line that is easily editable like they usually do.

The last 15 minutes of the hotel failure video nails how bad the bait and switch was. The whole land is a failure in and of itself.

Ill never forget being at D23 when they first announced Galaxy's Edge back in 2015. They went on and on about how everything was connected and how there was a new SW story to fit into the new cannon, everything from the rides to the quick services place. I just remember wondering how they would track that for everyone from every fat bongoid family to the Brazilian tour groups to the exhausted family with annoying kids. It just seem so ambitious given the sheer number of people that would attend but I chalked it up to Disney's great spyware and tracking everything.

Real thing rolls out and theres no 'story' thats connected to the area. A big reason why they wanted it to be an ugly new IP pirate planet was because they wanted you to have some smuggler hero storyline and shill new SW, but it was logistically impossible, so the entire new SW story crap was all for nothing. Yes, this was intentional because they expected people to fawn over the new SW movies and be as good or better than the originals. You're then stuck with an ugly land to which no one has an emotional connection with when you could have made it look like the metropolis planet or the Naboo kingdom. At least those would have looked nicer on the eyes.
