Do you think Disney had plans to replace Splash Mountain for a while due to it being based on a “racist” movie, or do you think they announced they were going to change it as a knee-jerk reaction to outrage surrounding George Floyd?

The OLC pays Disney for licenses of the intellectual property. What’s hilarious is Tokyo Disney acquired Splash Mountain because the Japanese don’t give a fuck about race politics or Floyd. They’ve also acquired many Imagineers from Disney Parks because they have a reputation for their quality rides and wanting to be at the forefront of amusement park technology.

I wouldn't be surprised if Disney was kicking around the idea of changing Splash for awhile now, since Song of the South is so controversial (majority of which is their fault because their refusal to acknowledge it just makes it seem more forbidden), but the revision is so half assed it feels like a knee-jerk reaction.

I'm just perplexed by the Tiana ride. You had a perfect villain in Dr. Facilier that doesn't even show up, there's lots of dead air, a boring story, it's all around a massive downgrade from Splash. It's like they tried to make a worse experience, I can't imagine Imagineers sitting around and deciding that this was truly a project that would go well. Also for adapting a movie that was touted as Disney's return to traditional animation it feels a touch sacrilegious to use CGI in some of the screens.

Looking around at some Disney park forums, I've seen people say that the lack of Facilier stemmed from Disney not wanting to make the ride scary, which 1. the ride already has a huge drop and 2. the best Disney attractions have an element of fear/danger to them. Pirates of the Caribbean is about the fun of pirates straight up terrorizing a town, Haunted Mansion has murder/suicide references and everything else in it, and the original Snow White's Scary Adventure is basically a horror movie. It's scary that the sensibilities of a man as conservative as Walt Disney are too much for people today.

The Tokyo parks are usually seen as being the crown jewels of Disney parks because if I recall the OLC spends a shit ton of money. Imagineers are basically given a blank check a lot of the time which allows them to try all sorts of new things or just really spend a lot of time on the details. When the OLC had the idea for Tokyo Disney land, they kept pestering Disney to work with them but Disney kept saying no since they were too held up with EPCOT. Eventually they gave them a "fuck off" offer where they would work with them on the park but only if the OLC paid for everything, and they agreed which surprised Disney. You can definitely see that all the money doesn't go to waste especially if you look at Tokyo Disney Sea.
 
I'm tired of this notion that kids shouldn't be scared. Kids love to be scared, it makes them feel grown up. I remember going to Disney as a kid and not knowing there was going to be something scary on the ride, but those experiences made it memorable and as a result, I grew attracted to it.

If you get boring rides where everything is OK always and we sit and sing kumbaya while holding hands, no one is going to remember that and it appeals to exactly no one. Disney knew what he was doing when he made his dark rides. They all had a sense of danger and those are still seen to this day 70 years later as classics

Don't remind me, my heart still breaks for that sweet Canadian grandpa *sigh* Not even Transformers is utilizing him as much as they should for the 40th anniversary.

It unironically follows the exact same plot beats as Cuties (also about immigrant children assimilating through sexualization). But with even less self-interrogation.
 
I just learned about the existence of the Ratatouille ride that opened back up at Epcot in 2023 and geeeez, Disney has not been designing good rides in general these past 5 years. Comments are turned off of course.

I think of all the decisions the mouse has made in the past thirty years, "welp, Uni is getting away with it, SCREENS EVERYWHERE" is the one that makes me the most sad

That ride is pretty popular and not terrible though? Has some ok practical effects with heat and cold. Line for it is way too long for what it is. Its way better than Frozen and children actually like the ride. (Little girls and their moms like Frozen still)

Ratatouille and Mickey and Minnies Runaway Railway are pretty solid 7/10 rides that you wont regret going on but arent A ticket attractions. They market them that way though and its indicting those are the apex of what modern Disney can deliver.

This is essentially just a really shit version of the Transformers ride at Universal Studios.
This one also relies solely on screens, but the car moves far more frantically. The fact that it's about photo-realistic robots instead of cartoon characters means there's not as big of a disconnect between the screens and the physical environment.

It's never about preventing children from being scared, it's about preventing manchildren from being uncomfortable.
