I feel like I'm in the small camp that actually likes Hans as a villain, if only because he's a smugfuck little shit that subtly tried to kill everyone so he could claim power. I dunno. He just has potential for me, especially when he almost slaughtered Elsa with a sword towards the climax. Sneaky little shitlords are some of my favorite kinds of villains.

In a way, I feel Disney as a corporation has always been the way it is now. It's just that it's much more obvious nowadays. They seemed pretty intent on building a park despite pissing off an entire country if that Defunctland video was any indication. And they threw out shitty low budget spin offs and sequels to their more successful films for nearly two decades. Now they don't seem to have much in the way of original ideas and are trying to recapture the lightning in the bottle that was the Disney Renaissance.

I'd imagine when Disney himself died, a lot of the integrity of the company died with it, and even then when I hear about something like say Mary Poppins' origins, I'm not even sure about that either.

At the very least though, underneath it all are people who genuinely want to make good films.

It always has been (Snow White had merchandise available the day it premiered), but I feel before there was a level of...quality? Artistic integrity? That you don't see much anymore. Amidst the remakes and the controversial MCU / Star Wars shit, the new movies just feel compliant, like they're there to just address "criticisms at Disney" and entertain the kids but not much else. (Disney is racist and sexist? Then let's give the audiences Moana, with some Lin-Manuel Miranda thrown in there as well to appeal to the tumblrinas / SJWs) The fact that CGI / 3D makes every film look the same doesn't help matters, either.

The trolls were the worst part of the film. You could get used to Olaf because of his role in the story, but you could take out the trolls and nothing would be lost.

When I was in high school some buddies and I saw it out of boredom. During that dumbass troll song my friend shouted out "Stop singing! She's fucking dying!".

Which is funny as hell because Moana didn't blow up in popularity on Tumblr, at least not when it first came out (maybe it spiked later for all I know). Guess it was still "problematic" or something.

It was made by white people, therefore was culturally appropriation. Plus Dwyane Johnson isn’t pure islander.

Vincent Price hosted Phantom Manor
Phantom Manor is under refurbishment and one of the changes will be using his narration again, I heard.

As for why people point out Disney's greed, I don't think the point is to say that they're worse than any other company for wanting to make money first. However, there's the idea that because Disney was many people's childhoods they are the one company that cares about putting out a good product to make people happy before they care about making money. (I see a similar thing with Nintendo but that's neither here nor there.) The attempts to have a monopoly on entertainment also make the corporate greed aspect really clear.

The first trailer for the new Aladdin dropped. It looks pretty but it's hard to judge much else. That cave is a let down. It was so much cooler as a being that rose up out of the desert instead of a cave that always is just there. (as judging by the fact it seems to be carved into a large rock or mountain.)

I still think of the pre-Eisner era of Disney myself, but maybe because part of my childhood existed then. I used to watch these episodes Disney Channel was airing during their early years. They were very informative and gave me a reason to appreciate what they did...

I know everyone kept trashing the Beauty And The Beast live action remake (including Lindsay Ellis) but I enjoy it. Even the autotuned Emma Watson singing which was distracting but I got used to it. I can shrug off the criticisms like the ball gown dress and still like the rest of the movie. Kevin Kline was entertaining as Maurice and even though his song was short, I like it. And I love Luke Evans as Gaston- even though he doesn't resemble the cartoon version. He made me laugh. So did Josh Gad.
Speaking of Josh Gad I know tons of people were angry about the Lefou gay portrayal. Yeah, the advertising got annoying but I like how they didn't overdo the gay character like Hollywood has the habit of doing. He was a regular guy.

I was always a big fan of the Disney animated movie and I never compare them. I like both.

I agree, but I honestly dig the "Lazy Days" nightshirt I got from there.

It's so fucking adorable.

I bought a Cheshire Cat purse from Hot Topic because I liked Tim Burton's design and because that version of the Cheshire Cat is my favorite Stephen Fry voiced animated character. So I'm guilty of that too.
Also I still have that purse even though it's pretty old now.

So. The new Aladdin trailer ...

Even with all of this updated technology, the original animated movie feels bigger. The Cave of Wonders looked HUGE in the original. In this trailer? Whatever, man. It looks so tiny and ... Exactly like something I've seen in so many other movies before. I'm not looking forward to this, because the Disney live action movies suck.

I am so sick of the whole "deconstruction" thing that Disney has been doing in recent years. Everyone is just so goddamn cynical these days that they can't enjoy something that's earnest. Look at what the Beauty & The Beast live action remake did: It added new, unnecessary shit to address the shit that cynical assholes complained about ... Thus creating a shit movie, because the new shit created new plotholes and erased any sort of magic and charm.

And oh my god, I am offended that they chose to do a soft reboot of Mary Poppins. How fucking dare they. And how fucking dare people actually show interest in it because "OMG LIN MANUEL MIRANDA." Screw that! I hate Lin Manuel Miranda and Hamilton fans. They are sycophants who will call you every name in the book if you don't worship him. No honey, being a fan of a Broadway musical does not make you more historically astute. If you need catchy music instead of picking up a book to learn about history as an adult, then you're an idiot.

I'm dreading the moment when The Little Mermaid remake comes out, because Lin Manuel Miranda is going to be writing new songs for it, so of course I will be called scum of the earth when I hate the film. lol. I really do wish that Sofia Coppola's Little Mermaid movie had been made. I love the Disney version, but I also love the original fairytale (which is what Coppola wanted to adapt). Her version would have been the most visually stunning and femininely gothic movie ever, and I will forever be depressed about her abandoning that project. Oh, what could have been.

On a much more positive note, I did actually adore the new Christopher Robin movie. There wasn't an air of cynicism in that movie, and it was refreshing. It was a really classy and charming movie.
And being the Disney fan that I am, I was so happy to see Richard Sherman performing one of his songs at the end of the movie.

Cynicism comes and goes. it was big in the 70s and it's coming back in fashion for a few years. In a few years people will find a really good honest story and the cycle will restart.

Also, I agree about disliking Lin Manuel Miranda. I have to admit that I can't stand Hamilton, especially the music. Something about the slow rap just doesn't appeal. It's sad that he's going to be writing new songs for TLM but as long as he's not also playing Sebastian or something (probably jinxed that) it shouldn't be too bad. Just rehashed and inferior.

In doing some reading about the Copolla mermaid it sounded like it could have been something beautiful. With the underwater scenery, and keeping the tragic (albeit weirldy religious (due to mermaids not having souls)) ending.

Lastly, I had no idea that Mr Sherman appears in Christopher Robin, I guess he plays the main theme song? I really respect him and his brother for all the work they did to bring those films to life. To think that they, a good part of the magic of Mary Poppins, are being traded out for LMM is annoying and kind of sad. Still, it's what the people think they want and that's all a corporation cares about.

My favorite Disney movie since my childhood (besides The Little Mermaid) is Fantasia.
The classical music always calmed me and didn't bore me when I was younger and the animation was gorgeous. I feel like people don't acknowledge this one as much anymore.

I wish the deleted Clair De Lune video had been included.

The Chinese Dance in Fantasia is one of my favourite parts of any Disney Film. It cements the Nutcracker Suite in my mind as my favourite part of the film. I've always felt that Clair de Lune scene was a bit dull for my tastes but I can't deny that it's simply gorgeous. Something serene to a bird gliding gracefully across the water in the middle of a bayou. It did get reused but with different music in Make Mine Music but the replacement song, Blue Bayou, certainly doesn't capture the same beauty. I guess classical wouldn't really have fit in with the then modern music they were going for in the film.

I do find it sad that Fantasia isn't as well thought of as it should be as it remains the most ambitious Disney film made and the plans for similar films such as the yearly update, or Musicana which would have been a world showcase movie. There even was plans for a Fantasia 2006 but that never went anywhere.

There was a planned Ride of the Valkeries section of the original film. It looks pretty gorgeous

Another great unused idea was The Swan of Tuonela which took you on a ride through a marsh in what looks like a viking longboat

It would have been magic.

There was also a proposed segment based on 'Ride in a Perambulator' which would have shown a day in the park through the eyes of a baby

In Musicana you would have had some really interesting set pieces

Ali_Baba_(14).jpg

First was an Ali Baba that used bird instead of people

Rain_God_(2).jpg

You also had a rain god segment for africa

Nightingale_(4).jpg Jl_concept_art_web.jpg A segment based on Hans Christain Andersen's The Nightingale for Asia

An eerie jungle for South America in the Peru segment
Peru_(3).jpg
Peru_(2).jpg

For North America you had Jazz Frogs
Bayou_(10).jpg
Bayou_(3).jpg

And finally for Europe you had a segment known as Finlandia which was about the battle between an Ice god and a Sun god

Icelandia_(1).jpg

Two unused concepts for Fantasia 2006 were actually animated

Sadly none of them use classical music, though one of the main musical ispirations behind the Lion King is a good second place.

There are some other really cool unused Disney concepts if anyone is interested

I didn't like Fantasia 2000. But the segment for Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin is superb.
I felt like it got the image of the style of the song well. It made me feel like I was in the 1920's.

Quick update - Forgot that this
was also intended for Fantasia 2006. It's pretty fantastic

Edit: Rhapsody in Blue is very close to being my favourite segment across both Fantasias. I really love how it starts with the world being drawn, and the intersecting stories, and just everything. I really feel the depression of the man hit by the depression. The only other new segment I really liked in Fantasia 2000 was the Flamingo one, and a good part of that is just due to how cool it is that one made animated the entire thing himself

Edit 2: I guess Firebird is also pretty cool

My single favorite moment in a Disney film is from Fantasia: The Night On Bald Mountain & the Ave Maria. To me, it's animated perfection.

As for Fantasia 2000, I agree that it is vastly inferior to the original ... But there are some sequences that I do enjoy. Being the Donald and Daisy fan that I am, I loved the Noah's Arc sequence. I also agree that the Rhapsody in Blue sequence is fantastic.

EDIT: @Cyborg Scars We literally posted a link to The Little Match Girl at the same time. Ha!

I also love the difference in the animation that Disney did for Rhapsody In Blue. It looked so different than their usual style. If they had done the regular Disney animation I don't think it would fit for the time they were going for. I want to see more of that kind of animation style. Whatever it is. Old time animation from previous decades is so fun to watch.

Speaking of that, I wish I could see a Disney movie done in Impressionist style, but I know that won't happen.

Does anyone like the old live action films? I actually like Pete's Dragon tbh. Even though it's silly. Also I still play this song sometimes:
And Mickey Rooney's in this. I like Mickey Rooney. I remember being surprised that people were angry that Pete's Dragon got remade.

Old Yeller is great of course. When I was a little kid I used to have a crush on Travis.
