I think I'll pass, thank you. The dalmatian story already made me feel depressed.
The live action dalmations wasn’t the only time Hollywood fucked with a dog breed. Rin-tin-tin caused the German Shepherd breed to be fucked so hardcore that responsible breeders are still dealing with the aftershocks of the 1950’s. Any movie with real dogs causes a spike in stupid breeders.

There was an article I read when Finding Dory was going to be released about how people actually thought clownfish would be good pets after seeing the original Finding Nemo. Can't parents teach their kids that they can't always get what they want?
It's mostly because many people don't educate themselves about the pets they're getting.

I'm sorry. :(

Surprised no one else has posted this yet. Bit of an eye-opener, if I say so myself.

It's funny how easily-impressionable we can be. I remember actually liking Black Cauldron as a kid--didn't watch it a whole lot, but I liked it. I might've actually taken some inspiration from it, now that I think about it, but I couldn't exactly say where or how outside of probably its macabre nature. Yet I tried to pretend the movie was worse than it actually is, if only because that's how Disney wants you to believe, how other non-animation fans want you to see it. Though it coul also be because Gurgi might've held the film down just a little bit--but not intentionally.

Kingdom of the Sun may be a sad example of Disney's production struggles, but Black Cauldron is definitely Disney's most tragic in how it's been treated. And it's sad that even to this day they pretend it doesn't exist, because "we can't scare children" or some other bullshit. As much as I'd like to know what Kingdom of the Sun may have turned out to be, I wish we could get the uncut film of Black Cauldron more.

I always assumed Disney wanted to forget Black Cauldron because of how poorly it underperformed at the box office.

I think the reason Black Cauldron gets the hate it gets is mainly the voice work. Gurgi's voice is extremely annoying and the guy voicing Taran seems to be trying way too hard to put on a Welsh accent. I think what would've saved Black Cauldron would've been getting rid of Gurgi and making Tarn speak with a Northern accent as it would be much more tolerable to a foreign audience and convey just how low on the social order he is.

The Horned King is a pretty stone-cold badass motherfucker that deserves a solid place in the Disney Villain collection. Guy wanted to rule the world with demonic warrior-zombies. That's certainly pretty dark by Disney villain standards.

I don't think the horror content is why it's been swept under the rug (particularly since the worst of it was cut in post production), but because it's failure nearly bankrupted the studio. That people have generally shown little interest in it has helped in that (it didn't even have a VHS release until the latter half of the 90's).

On the plus side though the failure of The Black Cauldron led to the creation of DuckTales and other TV shows that were extremely popular for 80's and 90's kids. So I think it's balanced out.

Disney was planning to go into the TV business before The Black Cauldron was even released. Their first shows came out the same year.

The problem with the film was that it was from the previous regime at the company, which was trying to do stuff that was a little more beyond what Disney was known for (see also The Black Cauldron's live-action equivalent, Return to Oz). When Eisner came to power he pretty much sabotaged the damn thing. I assume the video linked above goes into how it was extensively cut. It probably wouldn't have been successful on its own, admittedly, but the fact remains they kind of fucked with it.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks > Mary Poppins.
I'd rather see a decades later sequel with in her 90's Angela Lansbury than new Mary Poppins with someone other than Julie Andrews.
