While I do think a Disney film will win due to various reasons not related to to their quality, Spiderverse is in the interesting camp of being a black super hero movie, meaning both people who care about the best film winning and the insufferably woke would both be upset at its loss. Disney could miss out on the Oscar so as to not have people complain about the Oscars being racist.

I don't give a shit about the Oscars anymore, but I'm still a little salty that Disney threw Lilo & Stitch under the bus so Spirited Away would win an Oscar 'cause Lasseter's buddies with Miyazaki. But then despite The Wind Rises being Miyazaki's supposed final film, because Frozen made them a shit-ton of money they didn't make an effort to give his movie better recognition outside of "Best Script".

I'm of the conspiracy camp the Oscars is in Disney's pocket, so watch as Disney's in agreement to let the Spidey-verse win so as to avoid screeches of racism. Though it'd be more hilarious if that's actually not the case and Spidey-verse blindsides Disney. Either way, their ratings are going to be at an all-time low again so win-win. :story:

The real problem, apparently, is that the voters for Best Animated Feature don't give that much of a shit. They're going to give Disney the win every year because "eh, my kids liked it."

And I think that's true. I saw something about it years ago when Frozen won.

I remember that article. Fucking despicable. Just adds more evidence that the Academy really and truly doesn't give a shit about animation (or even film-making anymore, let's be honest), and that they're still pissy they were forced to implement it as a category after 1991 and then had to activate it starting in 2001.

It's certainly been that way for decades, even when there was just the "animated short film" category.

Let's be honest, the category is only there because they want to keep animated movies out of the "real" categories. The only thing they care about is that nothing in the Best Animated category can win Best Feature.

I think it's "mandatory" for film students to "give a fuck" about the Oscars since that and the Emmy Awards and Golden Globe are consistently brought up in practically every film class. Luckily none of my teachers didn't expect us to write reports about it, and only like one teacher gave extra credit to students who saw specific movies in theaters or something, but none of them trash-talked the award ceremonies--though they never showered praises on them, either, now that I think about it (had instructors who won such awards, too, you'd think they'd be willing to gush about it). I do remember that when the folks behind Life of Pi got butt-fucked, everyone in my class, teachers included, were upset about the treatment, but that was the extent of Oscars-bashing I heard.

I've wondered for a while now how animation teachers (those from CalArts especially) feel about the Academy, given how it thinks so lowly of animation as a whole. I imagine that'd be worth a day's lesson or two to pull back the curtain and call them out on it.

I imagine everyone up to at least the director, and maybe even higher up in the studio, feels frustration knowing that no matter what they do they'll never do any better than the kid's prize. Because there are people who actually do care about the various rewards shit. Back when Blockbuster was a thing as soon as the Academy Awards happened they'd have a million copies of that year's Best Picture because people would actually run out to watch them just so they can say they watched that year's Best Picture. It's all kinds of stupid, but having the best labels that some people actually care about apparently does result in sales that otherwise wouldn't occur.

A lot of people nowadays still think that because it's won the Oscar, it automatically means it's good. Boomer parents and the like.

Sometimes the Oscar at least helps a rather unlikely movie get some attention from the mainstream. Not always, but sometimes.

The problem I have with Disney/Pixar winning best animated EVERY YEAR is that it steals the thunder away from lesser-known animated films that could have gotten some publicity. Disney is a big enough thing to where pretty much everyone and their mom will remember the stuff they put out years later without it having to win an Oscar. But what about your Fantastic Mr. Fox or your Secret of Kells? Apart from animation buffs, no one will try them out because they're usually the exception and not the rule at the Academy Awards. And it really sucks because the Mouse has such a chokehold on the Academy that no one else has a shot at what would make all those hours of animation and effort feel worth it.

There's a good reason Oscar bait is what it is when detected (90 ~ 95% of the time...) - overrated and/or pretentious BS.

Secret of Kells is pretty shit. Song of the Sea is a much better movie.

Yeah it sucks that animated movies, no matter how amazing they are, will never be seen more than just kids movies.

We obviously know they are so much more, but sadly people just dont care. And thus watch whatever garbage animated films are out there just because.

Hopefully movies like The Incredibles 2 and SpiderVerse would make people be more interested in seeing animated movies.

Until then we're just going to have crap like Boss Baby or another Ice Age sequel.

A question Id like to ask you guys is what type of disney princess is Disney going to come up with next?

Im guess an African princess since "my wokeness" and such.

They already did an African-American princess, and that satisfies their diversity quota for now.
