FROZEN 2 TRAILER: TWITTER ASKS, WHERE IS ELSA'S GIRLFRIEND?
Culture_Frozen2_GiveElsaGirlfriend.jpg

Fans have been calling for Frozen's Elsa to get a girlfriend for years.

ONE HOUR. THAT'S all it took for the tweets to start coming in. No sooner had Disney dropped the trailer for Frozen 2than the question started popping up: Where was Elsa's girlfriend? Was she gonna be a lesbian, or nah? Disney fans and LGBTQ advocates alike were demanding: Make Elsa Gay, Dammit.

This call for Elsa (voiced by Idina Menzel) to embrace her Sapphic side didn't come from out of the blue. For one, her theme song, "Let It Go," has been embraced as a coming-out anthem, beloved at karaoke nights and piano bars the world over. For another, there's been a Twitter campaign for it that dates back to 2016, when a young woman named Alexis Isabel Moncada noted how "iconic" it would be if Disney made the character into a lesbian princess. "The entertainment industry has given us girls who have fallen in love with beasts, ogres who fall for humans, and even grown women who love bees," Moncada wrote in a piece for MTV about her tweet. "But we've never been able to see the purity in a queer relationship." Soon #GiveElsaAGirlfriend was trending and a movement was born.

The idea gained so much traction that eventually people were asking the movie's creators about it. Codirector Jennifer Lee said they were having "tons of conversations" about it. Menzel herself said she was "happy" people were asking Disney to give Elsa a female love interest. (Coming from the woman who originated the role of Maureen in Rent, this is not a surprise.)

And yet, this trailer shows no sign of Elsa's girlfriend. It's possible that the ocean she's trying to cross leads to the island of Lesbos, but if that's true there's no indication of it here. That doesn't necessarily mean all is lost—the movie has cast known bisexual Evan Rachel Wood as an as-yet-unnamed character, and there is a mysterious woman in pants in this trailer—but at this point, it's pure speculation.

Should Frozen 2 turn out to be Carol on Ice, the move would be huge. Disney, a purveyor of family entertainment for decades, has long erred on the conservative side, and should it allow one of its most beloved heroines to embrace a queer identity, the message it would send to young viewers and their parents would be downright historic. The studio has been dancing on the edge of LGBTQ representation with quietly queer characters in Thor: Ragnarok, the first Frozen, and that "exclusively gay moment" in Beauty and the Beast, but to have Elsa come out proudly would be monumental.

And really, Disney ought to do it sooner rather than later. These fans are never going to let it go.

FFS, people. Let It Go is about a person who is casting off her friends, family and home to live a life of total isolation in a castle built from her own insecurity. I know its a ballad, but it was sung ironically. Explicitly ironically, in fact. The line "The cold never bothered me anyhow" points to Elsa living in denial of the disappointing existence she's chosen for herself. Its not empowering, but quite the opposite: its about pretending something is empowering when you're hitting rock bottom.

I still don't think Disney has the balls to go through with Lesbo!Elsa. I'll eat my hat if it happens.

I haven't even seen the movie and I'm still annoyed they turned the Ice Queen into a protagonist over this.

I enjoyed Frozen, obvious elements irritated me (autoparody moments and Hans plottwist), but it was cute. I think Frozen 2 can be actually better if they don't force some "haha, old Disney tropes" moments or Super Lesbian Elsa. I really like this trailer visuals.

And why Elsa just can't be just single heterosexual woman? Or why her sexuality will be not adressed at all because her relationship with her sister is more important?

I remember the director of the first Frozen suggesting that Elsa's parents are also Tarzan's parents (which makes no sense considering they look completely different, especially the fathers). Not gonna lie though it would be kinda surreal if they still followed down that road.

Dafuq, that's stupid. There's a fan theory that the sunken ship in The Little Mermaid is their ship, and that makes more sense in connecting two different stories.

I want to see a war between the asexuals and the lesbians over this. "ELSA SHOULD HAVE A GIRLFRIEND" "OH MY GOD ELSA MIGHT BE ACE YOU FUCKING BIGOT"

Everyone that doesn't think that Elsa is an autosexual futanari that does live jack shows for the Kingdom of Arendelle is just in denial.

They won't. Disney still wants the money from conservative families and Muslim countries/China. Making their most iconic character of the last 5 years a lesbian would mean throwing dollars down the toilet for them.

I thought he was just courting some people who came up with the idea, because I heard people throwing that stupid theory around before he came forward and said they were totally right. He even said some nonsense about them going through a time portal that threw them ahead to the late 1800's. But it's basically bullshit and I don't expect Disney to ever claim that as fact.

It's still pretty weak considering that was the default construction style for European wooden ships for centuries.

During the final act of Beauty and the Beast, Gastons big mob begins a big fight with all the living objects who are defending their castle. Isn't it weird how no one seems to be questioning this? They just go with it like they are used to battles with living objects.

If this was the Toy Story canon, they'd be so freaked out.
I'm a little late to the party here, but these are the same people who apparently forgot that this "Beast" is (at VERY least) living in the same castle that their supposed monarch (who mysteriously disappeared along with all of his staff) lived in like a decade prior. Not to mention the fact that it could be assumed in the animated (better) version of the story, but was apparently flat out confirmed in that shitty live action remake, the townspeople knew and were related to some of those "living objects."

Since Frozen is relevant again. It makes me wonder if they would use their original villain the snow queen in the sequel but that would be giving them too much credit for actually sourcing the supposed story frozen is based on.

Hans is still among the most forced Disney villains ever. It's embarrassingly obvious that his role as designated villain came late in development with his ridiculous scheme to become king a rush job.

You didn't need an obvious villain besides Elsa for Frozen. Even with his backstory you can just have Hans go off to kill Elsa but without the "ima take your kingdom mwahahahee" (instead it's so Arendelle wouldn't suffer from the magic winter anymore and/or to redeem himself for gold digging).

So apparently the Kim Possible movie came out earlier this month. It should come as no surprise that Drakken and Shego were the only real highlight (with the possible exception of the scene where Kim concusses herself trying to do a spinning kick).

What the fuck, what even is this context--do I even need context?

I was wondering why I saw a video on my recommendations along the lines of "Kim Possible is a Moron" or something like that, and I was confused what that meant. Completely forgot about the movie, sounds and looks fucking awful.

Kim gets jealous because the new girl at school is better than she is at fighting crime, so she tries to imitate one of the new girl's moves and fails miserably. Suffice it to say, its all part of Drakken's elaborate scheme to steal Kim's mojo.

'Kay I was never an avid Kim Possible watcher, but I don't think Kim as a character is that envious towards anyone. That's dumb.
