Disposing of old devices

Literally all you have to do to permanently destroy a mechanical hard drive is to damage the platter(s). Pound a nail through it, or remove the metal cover and physically deface it (even a light scratch would be enough). Setting shit on fire, or destroying non-hard drive components, is highly unnecessary.
You are no fun.

When people go that far makes me worry what they're actually worried about, If it wasn't for the magnets inside I'd probably never have bothered destroying a single drive.
You really think some bum going through your trash is going to find your old HDD successfully perform a plater swap, do a successful data restore then break the passwords required to find that info?

Unless you're the head of a large successful business/government department or on the Forbes rich list you can probably relax. The shock from dropping it in the trash is enough.
Nice try, glowniggers.

Keep your old laptop. Install a Linux distro like Lubuntu or Puppy. Tinycore is pretty much as small as any shit-top can use and begin to fly.

Or, actually apply your restorative skills to put a Raspberry Pi inside as a surrogate host and give it new life that way, it doesn't even have to be for use as a secondary computer just offhand storage.

Even the worst chromebook can be worked around to hop off the pajeet express...

fuck it i have no kids, the environment can suck my balls, all goes in trash, i wont be alive when they run out of landfill sites or african countries to dump the waste.

I part out old machines (mobo, CPU, ram, etc) on ebay but the hard drives get drilled through (have yet to dispose of an SSD as my first one still works). Some times I've gotten creative and ran them over with my car/shot them with a rifle.

I destroyed several old smart phones/tablets in this way last year.

in the bin, couldnt care less about the waste, my country will be an Islamic republic in a few generations. Let them inherit a country of landfill.

The probably most autistic way of getting rid of an old storage medium I could think of would be subjecting it to high energy frequencies/microwave radiation. A wave frequency of about 300GHz would already be sufficient to irreparably damage the surface of the drive, which can be achieved by a household microwave oven. You probably would not want to simply put it in a microwave due to the heat build-up inside of it which would likely result in a fire. Therefore you would want to take the main components of the microwave oven (e.g. the magnetron, the capacitator, the HV transformer) out and basically build what is commonly known as a HERF-Cannon. Now you just want to orient it in a safe direction (no flammeable material), put your medium in front of it, take cover ant activate it.

Given the extreme danger of this process, with a high probability of electrocution and the far easier solution of just smashing your storage medium, only a complete retard would do something like this.
