Disaster DNC adopts rule requiring candidates to run and register as Democrat - Totally not aimed at Bernie

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) adopted a new rule on Friday aimed at keeping outsider candidates like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) from trying to clinch the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020.

The new rule, adopted by the DNC's Rules and Bylaws Committee, requires all Democratic presidential candidates to be a member of the Democratic Party, Yahoo News reported.

A presidential candidate running for the Democratic nomination must be a member of the party, accept the Democratic nomination and "run and serve" as a member.

Sanders, who has maintained his status as an independent, fought a tough primary race for the Democratic nomination against eventual presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in 2016.

A source familiar with the discussions told Yahoo News, however, that the rule wasn't targeted at Sanders.

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers and DNC member, posted a photo on Twitter Friday of the rules change at the meeting in Providence, R.I.

"At the time a presidential candidate announces their candidacy publicly, they must publicly affirm that they are a Democrat," the rule says.

In March, the DNC voted to acknowledge a need to reduce the influence of so-called superdelegates in presidential primaries - the unelected delegates who may support any candidate for the party's nomination, regardless of their state's victor.

Yahoo News reported that the committee did finalize a vote on superdelegates and will decide in August.

The DNC is absolutely retarded. Disrespecting all the Bernie voters by making a move transparently designed to slap their guy in the face is something that needs to be done with considerable finesse. Which means not doing it less than six months before the midterms. But Lizard Queen Hillary isn't running for anything in the midterms, so this doesn't matter to her, and since the DNC is her creature, it therefore doesn't matter to them either. If Trump actually does put her in jail, he will ironically have done a huge favor to his opposition party.

As a foreigner, could someone explain to me how this is a bad thing? It just makes sense to me that if you run for a party, you'd be a full member of the party

Keep in mind that unlike Europe and many other worldwide Democracies the US does not have a Parlimentary system. It’s a Democratic Republic and the Presidency, the executive branch is wholly separate from the legislature. So there is no “coalition government”. Small parties that cannot win National Elections have no leverage or power. This action by the Dem’s is directly against Bernie Sanders. Who is effectively the leader of the far left Progressives. If Bernie goes independent or creates his own Party it shatters the existing Dem’s. Where the current Dem and GOP exist in near equilibrium, stripping out the far left chunk of the Dems on their own reduces the Dem’s to a regional party with no national power and no clear path back to it in less than a generation. We don’t have a Prime Minister. Coalitions cannot share the Presidency.

Ok that might not be entirely accurate. The US does have coalitions of different groups, but they are generally subsumed under the general banner of one party or the other. So the GOP is a pre existing coalition of Conservatives, Libertarians, Christians, etc. the Dem’s are a mix of Progressives, Socialists, Labor, and Ethnic and Gender special interests. This action by the DNC can be largely seen as targeting the Progressives and seeking to get them to toe the establishment Dems line or GTFO. It’s not gonna go well for them.

I remember going to sleep on election night, fully expecting to wake up to another Clinton presidency. Fully expected to quickly start buying some guns and ammo and just stockpiling; expecting "the worst" to happen.

Woke up, realized Trump somehow fucking won, grinned, and then went about my day.

Thanks to this latest DNC stunt, I have a feeling I'll be grinning more.

Sidenote: Not a Dem or a Pub. I hate both parties, but agree with some standings from each side. I just hate the Clintons with a passion.

Superdelegates were a reaction to the shitshow that was the DNC 1968 in Chicago. They never want the party to reach that level of disunity ever again.
Now I'm wondering how likely it is for riots to break out at the 2020 Dem convention. Probably not as bad as 1968 but still...
