some call them school shooter pills some say its placebo others say they are simply over prescribed and some say it permanently effects your brain. Do you trust SSRIs?

They have their uses, but I would never put my child on SSRIs unless the only other options were death or institutionalization, in which case, it is already too late.

No. There's no solid evidence between serotonin levels and depression so I cannot understand why it's used as a treatment for depression. I think for like 95% of people (I might be biased because this was the case for me) environmental, lifestyle, and social factors are the root cause of most cases.

I was severely depressed for the majority of my life but exercise, going outside, abstaining from; alcohol, cannabis, and nicotine all did wonders for me. My early life was gay as hell so I think I have to work at it harder than normies, but it's completely manageable with a healthy lifestyle.

I also think the recent decline in third spaces and community activities is extremely deleterious to mental health (the dude who wrote Bowling Alone was a psychic) so sometimes talk therapy is needed for some people. However, I have yet to meet a therapist who doesn't want to put you on drugs even if you're feeling the slightest bit of ennui, which I don't think is unreasonable in this day and age. That shit pisses me off. I don't want drugs, I just want to talk through it with someone impartial!

Well yeah, no shit. People are depressed because their lives are depressing. We live lives starkly different from the lives we evolved to live. The issue is that for many people behavioral, environmental and social changes aren't viable. Some of us are smart and lucky enough to be able to recognize the need for behavioral interventions and put them into practice, and plan for a life that allows for that, but most people aren't, and the average blue collar dad doesn't even have time to hit the gym. Modern life is so ratfucked by Taylorism and Calvinism that unless you've got daddy money or fell backwards into a white collar job, the world effectively demands that you resort to pharmacological intervention, or some other form of substance dependency -- even if that's "just" caffeine, nicotine and alcohol or cannabis. Wake up, consume your stimulant, do your work, consume your depressant, and if you're smart and lucky and work hard and have support and resilience factors you'll only have to live that way for a decade; otherwise, you do it forever, and if you're lucky enough to live to retirement you'll've traded enough of your health for money that you'll be able to pay for treatment for your declining health. It's utterly soul sucking, why wouldn't people be depressed?

tl;dr we live in a society

So yeah, obviously, live a life that doesn't make you want to die if you have that option, but don't assume everyone does.

As a general rule I don't trust the pharmaceutical industry period, but I've been through more than my share of bullshit and SSRIs and NDRIs have each kept me from killing myself at least once, so they're worth considering for that use case. But if you can get by without them, I would. They turn you into the kind of clown that can tolerate clown world and that can be useful for escaping clown world in theory but it's pretty easy to forget you're taking clown pills and get stuck there forever.

I took prozac for year back in high school, it didn't do shit. It was a total fucking waste of time and money.
Yeah I feel like brain chemistry is a real tricky thing to balance, once some kid I knew had me try one of his happy pills and I honestly could not tell the difference it made. Maybe just stop being a bitch and you'll feel better.

(Nobody ever talks about SNRIs, they’re better imho)
SNRI withdrawals are the stuff of nightmares. You need to taper off them very slowly over a period of months, or else you’re dealing with brain scramble, body zaps, and physical illness. Missing a single dose can totally fuck you up. Horrible drugs.

What needs to be looked into more instead are NDRI’s, which have no serotonin component and thus don’t produce the more severe withdrawal symptoms of SSRI’s and SNRI’s. They can also be used to treat symptoms of ADHD (much more preferable to taking legal methamphetamines imo) and be used for BPD patients in tandem with dialectical behavioral therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy.

Tldr: reason I take mine is because the side effects ( long term included ) aren't as bad as my condition.

Unfortunately I HAVE to take them due to having debilitating anxiety that I cannot control due to not seeking professional help because it's too expensive. I can function without them but it's much more difficult than if I did have them, this is why prescribing people medication at younger ages becomes problematic so quickly BTW, ssris also cause erectile dysfunction, and performance anxiety. Not a professional but I can not only personally test to the last part but I know quite a few people who suffer like this as well, ssris can truly make or break a gooner.
