What a fucking weirdo. Hope this leads to more troons leaving and falling on their face with the fork.
Been interested in programming. Might take me years. I got the idea of a funny supervillian to make myself the new head of GZDoom and make it the best God damn source port imaginable.

But, alas, that is just my autism spiking.

EDIT: Actually, aiming to be a head of UZDoom would be even more funnier.

Is the Dark Age now the worst Doom game or does Doom 3 still hold the title?
Doom 3 is a patrician choice, if you have shitty tastes then you might be better off with the sterile modern day slop that is Dark Ages or Doom 2016: Speedrunner Edition known as Eternal. We see where Doom "fans" have brought their respective fandoms, lmfao
The only correct thing you've ever said in this thread, albeit Quake won.

I am always right, you just don't listen. I do wish we would get another Quake game, but looking at the state of iD and the modern shooter fan, maybe dead is better. Everybody wants a remake or reboot of original Quake but I just want a sequel to 4, that game might not have been the most exciting shooter ever made but fighting Strogg as a Space Marine turned Strogg himself was pure kino. I want them to take that a step further and give Kane more abilities so that the player can choose the fast-paced Doom 2016 superpowered meta or take it easy in a more traditional FPS mode if one wishes, with pros and cons to both playstyles. Maybe using the special abilities would slowly corrupt Kane until he turned on his fellow Marines, something like that. We had no idea how good we had it with Id Tech 4, but now there is so much more you can do with modern hardware.

Doom 3 is my favorite "modern Doom" game, but I also agree with Get Phobo about it not being a Doom game.

I thought "Doom" 2016 was alright, but never really felt like replaying it at all. Even more so with Eternal (and Dark Ages I don't even care). I'm not sure what it is about them. Maybe it's nostalgia for the old Doom games, but I can just play them over and over, and there are so many mods I've yet to play!

The more I think about it, the more I feel the same about modern shooters like nu-Wolfenstein. Some of the Call of Duty games shockingly enough are an exception. I actually replayed some of those like Black Ops 1 & 2 because I enjoyed the single player campaigns.

Big agree there! Quake 4 was great, except for the vehicle sections. I hated those with a passion.

Does anyone have any mod recommendations for Hexen and/or Heretic?

They're my two favourite games made in the doom engine, but somehow I only ever played them "vanilla" (although I played them plenty of times).

I imagine over the last 2-3 decades a lot of cool stuff must have come out that I have been missing out on..
Late and gay, but the one only honest recommendation that I would have is Hexercise, because it's simple and straightforward, I haven't been watching the mod scene in the last few years, but throughout the majority of 2010 all I would see is either autistic shit that tries to turn both games into RPGs, or content slop that mindlessly throws everything into an unorganized mess, because nothing says quality more than having 4 ( four ) weapons in your shotgun slot.

Hexen and Heretic modding is a lot more sedate than DOOM modding, but there's still a few interesting ones that I rather like. I will note that most of these will require GZDoom.

-xrpg: Diet RPG mod for Hexen, closer to proper dungeon crawl feel. High focus on running through maps to pick up cool equipment. Enemies can get really annoying as you level, though.

-Wrath of Cronos: Zandronum compatible, multiplayer focused. Huge RPG overhaul with 3 additional classes focused around Diablo II style build shenanigans. Hexen default, also compatible with DOOM, Heretic, and Strife with the correct patches. The most recent builds are on All Fear The Sentinel if you're obsessive about bleeding edge.

-Walpurgis: Polished straightforward weapon + class enhancements. Adds an extra class and gives everyone 6 weapons to work with. Upgradable alt and tertiary fires, custom monster roster, lots of gameplay tweaking. DOOM, Heretic, and Hexen compatible.

-Heretical DOOM: Play as Corvus with an enhanced arsenal. More weapons, altfires, light RPG elements, on demand utility spells (including the Tome of Power.) Lots of explosions and light effects. Works with DOOM and Heretic.

-Guncaster: You are a man-dragon with oversized guns and Bioshock style offhand spellcasting. Lots of inventory management, buyable upgrades, altfires on altfires, equippable mech suits, summons, dual wielding, and all other manner of craziness. You will get OP fast. Works with DOOM, Heretic, Hexen, and Strife. Mod creator is also very blatantly a huge Command and Conquer fan and you will see that with certain parts of the arsenal.

@Halbschwanz These all sound cool, thanks! I'm currently on a big Hollow Knight spree but I'll check them out starting with xrpg.

EDIT1:
HUH, my ESET AV is detecting some malware over on the Wrath of Cronos download links at https://allfearthesentinel.net/
Threat: JS/Redirector.SWD trojan
Seems there's something in the page's javascript. Might check em out with firefox+noscript or try them at a later date...

EDIT2:
Hah, and itch.io is giving some false positive warning about the Heretical Doom download link. Seems fine otherwise, at least as far as I can tell.

I was curious about the Wrath of Cronos download link thing. It seems something is up with https://allfearthesentinel.net/ but https://allfearthesentinel.com/ works fine?... If anyone has an account over on those zdoom forums, should probably let them know to fix the links or look into it I guess...

EDIT: As far as I can tell the domain was changed in 2023 from .net to .com but who owns the .net one now?

Here are the updated download links for anyone else wanting to get it:

Quake 2 got Quake 4, Quake III Arena got Quake Live and Champions, Quake 1 has gotten nothing so far. It deserves some fucking respect dammit, give me Quake 5: OOPS! All Shamblers then you can get your Quake 6: Electric Stroggaloo.

the nu-dooms and wolfensteins aren't really that moddable either so all of their replayability falls flat on it's face, not to mention that these games have online mode shit, nu wolfestein has those raid-like things for more useless shit/achievementfaggotry rather than stuff that could be interesting.
