DOOM

Yo dawg I heard you like Doom

I really don't know where else to put it. John Carmack recently was on The Lex Fridman podcast and talked about everything from Doom to his AI stuff. This is a clip of him talking about John Romero. I've never heard him ever admit to possibly making a mistake before so I thought it was interesting.

Just recently bought 2016 and Eternal, both are fucking great games, and I'm addicted to the soundtrack. What are your guys' favorite songs on the OST?
I don’t know many specific songs, but I have to say: though I prefer Eternal as a whole, I liked the music of 2016 better.

As an aside: I honestly feel like audio cues are a bit of a miss in both games. Go back to Doom 1 or 2, and you immediately know what shit is waiting for you in the room even before you see it. Leave the room and hear the mechanical whirring of an arachnotron or the panting of a revenant just begging for you to peek your head back in. It created a real sense of tension and situational awareness that I sorely miss in both new Dooms. Most demons sound the same, pursue the same, and die the same. Some of it is due to the sound track covering a lot of it up, but I really miss some of the old clear Doom audio cues. I’ll never get tired of hearing the roller-blade sound as a cacodemon dies (yes, it was sampled from rubber rollerblade wheels on asphalt) or the “sch-THUNK sch-THUNK” from the cyberdemon’s footsteps.

Am I alone/insane for feeling this way?

Resource limitations gave video games back then a certain magic, it's like punk rock or delta blues.

Nah, I don't think so. I know there's a mod on Nexus that replaces some of the demon sounds with old ones from classic. I don't think it replaces all of them, but I haven't tried it myself yet.

Harbinger was my dark horse standout from 2016. Eternal, it's a tossup between the menu theme which strongly reminds of Harbinger, and the Hell on Earth/Final Sin theme. It's energetic, chaotic, and feels really Doom-y.

I think it has more to do with the sheer number of audio in the game. almost everything has an audio cue and it's not always easy to distinguish the sounds of individual demons amidst all the chaos. Doom Eternal's audio is a hair overengineered but personally I never found it to be detrimental. NuDoom is not designed as strongly around figuring out what you're up against before entering a room; most of the demons warp in after you enter anyways.

Oh please oh please I need someone to mod in decino.wad to replace all sounds

I loved At Doom's Gate in 2016 (the opening title drop track) and of course Rip and Tear was great. Eternal's The Only Thing They Fear Is You and Super Gore Nest were both really good.

Side note, I found a mod on Nexus that replaces the Doomguy's lines in Eternal with Alex Jones clips.

Holy shit can you send me a mod link? That sounds perfect.

So the original mod author took it down, or maybe Nexus removed it with how censor happy they are lately. If it's alright I'll attach my copy here for you. The only lines changed are the ones from the flashback cutscenes.

Pardon me if this has been shared before. Here is a quality of life sprite fix project for classic Doom which restores some unused rotation sprites for the low-tier monsters (made possible thanks to one of Romero's file dumps). Also fixes misc sprite alignment & pixel errors in Doom II/Final Doom. In prboom I have the cfg set up to always preload the fixes.

Behold! Unmirrored zombie sprites:

Post alleges typical gamedev shit that's unfortunately normal in the industry- crunch, mismanagement, unpaid labor, lack of communication, miscrediting, all the horror show. Sad to see it coming from a company as revered as id Software though.

At least Mick Gordon is correct about this:

No surprise that basement dwelling redditors would harass a random stranger, DDoS his servers and harass his other clients too. Then they have the gall to accuse Kiwifarms of doing the same exact thing. It's all just projection.

The thing that struck me most about this is how shit-tier the communications seems to be across the board.

And why is the fucking Studio Director responsible for Micky Gordon, instead of the Audio Team Lead or whatever the equivalent position is? It feels like Stratton got himself involved unnecessarily and acted without consulting his own lawyers.

ngl, I hope Micky Gordon walks away with a pile of blood money from id and Microshit/Bethesda.
