DOOM

DOOM 3 is a playable, commercial iD Tech 4 demo, moreso than its fellows. But this was the nature of 3D rendering hardware at the time: the folks with the tech knowhow to push the new GPUs were very few. In the same way that the design of DOOM 1 and 2 focused on making the best of the tech they had at the time, DOOM 3 continues that trend. It is very much an artifact of its time, moreso than the titles that came before and after, and that's due to the churn in tech at the time. It gets shit on because "how do we make compelling games with this tech" was very much an unsolved question at the time, and you ended up with the boring "physics puzzles" of the Half Life dreck as a consequence.
I could have forgiven Doom 3 a lot of things if the shooting was decent, sadly all the weapons looked, sounded and felt like absolute shit to use. Enemies disappearing into red mist upon death didn’t help things either.

I floated $100 to try TDA expecting to hate it and get a refund, but my low expectations were exceeded. The shield was a pleasant surprise, I enjoyed using the bash to move around and the more melee-oriented combat seemed fun. Too bad it runs like absolute shit on my machine. I finished level 2 when my two hours were up, so I refunded it expecting to pick it up for cheaper after an upgrade down the road.

I checked steam and the reviews were 60% and I feared for the worst. Then I saw the most major negative reviews were about how it had forced ray tracing you can't disable that eats up performance. Now it's up to the mid 80s which is good for a game that allegedly runs like shit. Hope my PC is up to the task.

I'm down for a bit of a slower paced Doom after Eternal's fun, but often overwhelming gameplay.

The main thing aside from performance that I'm worried about is the encroachment of story. Doom 2016 was entirely first person and makes it clear Doom Slayer doesn't give a fuck about anything but killing demons and he actively rejects the story. Eternal has more in your face lore, more cutscenes, and takes itself a bit too seriously, and The Dark Ages seems to just be a standard modern story focused game (with better gameplay)

Holy shit, I used to joke before that the dragon segments were the "turret section" of Doom TDA, but the first chapter ends on a literal unironic turret section :story:.

I'm not sure how I feel about the gameplay changes and the over emphasis on tacky hi-fi themes. Someone told me this isn't Quake, but so far, this might as well be Quake 2 middle ages edition. At least it runs well and didn't take 15 minutes to compile shaders before I could play it, so props to them for that.

I jumped into the thread to see how much of a disaster this piece of shit is going to be
Of course you did. You’re the biggest turbo boomer this website has ever seen.
and I find Cyrus having yet another mental meltdown
Rent.
Free.
which apparently involves Obsidian again out of nowhere
Oh no, I made fun of the saviors of gaming, Obshitian.
Cry harder.
Underage mad that people won't consume new product solely because it's new, lmao. Also wants even the tiniest dissent to be removed.
A quick reminder:
Not what I said in the slightest you mongoloid. What I said is that you and tards like you hate things that ARE good because they’re new. You are, ironically, the ones who can’t handle the dissenting opinions so you morons shout out to”slop” over and over in hopes to drown out actual discussion.
I will take another Doom 3 or Quake 4 in a heartbeat over this zoomer ADHD bing bing wahoo shit
Thanks for confirming you’ve never played OG Doom.
Doom 3 is the outllier
Bingo.
Doom 3 is the outllier, and I suspect that's where most of the resistance is coming from- kids who grew up with Halo, Doom 3 and CODlikes, and expect shooters to take themselves seriously, tackle serious issues, etc
I grew up with Halo and early COD and never once wanted Doom to be like those games. In my earlier years I grew up with Super Nintendo, N64 and PS1. I played Doom on PS1 and loved it for what it is…Doom.
I liked Doom 3 but it never “felt like Doom” to me.
Now all these people glaze it and it’s clear that it’s just “Old Game Good, New Game Bad.”
slop* is all know how to say.
Fixed it for you.
Stopped reading there
Because you’re a fucking retard.
Another guy there said that Doom 3 is trying to be System Shock 2, but without an interesting enemy.
I can see that.
Still fun though, gameplay was smooth and satisfying
It wasn’t bad but Eternal felt a lot more “Doom-esque” to me.
the soundtrack was amazing
Can’t argue there.
and Doom has always been a bunch of hallways between arenas
I guess.
Pretty much the only time I could see a Doom film working would be when it was the peak of its popularity around 95/96.
I liked 2005 for what it was. The FPS scene is a video I watch regularly.
its pretty clear that unless you got a master mind of a director, you are not getting a good doom live action
Don’t need that.
Just get the Hardcore Henry dude and slap Brock Lesnar in Doomguy armor. Done.
No one hated Doom 3 until 2016 came out
Ehhh idk about that. I remember Doon 3 got crapped on before 2016.

I accept your concession. :smug:
@30+GameOvers is widely regarded as the biggest crybaby moron on the gaming side of this website. Point and laugh at him.

Does the new game have the endless dogshit platforming sections? Fucking hated them in Doom Eternal, alongside the slow floor bullshit.

No one hated Doom 3 until 2016 came out and the faggots that whine jerked off to the lighting effects in 3.
I think theres context in that, ON RELEASE, it had at least decent reception because id-tech, because lighting, because new doom game after almost a decade, ect, but it also was VERY clearly seen by many as "ok, this isn't REALLY that doomy". Plenty of mods try to remedy this by making it faster and more hectic combat. It wasn't liked FOR being a spoopy shooter, it was liked IN SPITE OF being a spoopy shooter. Nobody WANTED to hate it, regardless of the flaws

I also think back then many weren't terribly articulate or knowing about the "souls" of game, or its feeling, ect, they probably remembered dark levels and thought that, but yeah. I think ironically enough brutal doom was where they started having a fucking lightbulb, seeing the IMMENSE success off that. Many doomworld faggots deny this but in 2014 they formally endorsed it, and 2 years later they had the game which borrowed a ton of ideas from it. That to me makes it VERY obvious they took notes.

don't forget they were originally trying to ALSO hire croteam to make basically a modern military shooter like cod or arma or whatever with doom monsters, and it was ALSO scrapped and turned into Serious sam 3 BFE.

Remember this guy? Hes literally a left over asset of trying to make doom 4 and ID said "fuck it, throw it into your game as an apology for wasting your fucking time"

TLDR : it was recieved OK for finally being another game where you blast demons with shotguns, but everyone knew it was off. And they kept being OFF until they saw how brutal doom was a success

Haven't had chance to play it myself yet, but Eternal was specifically the "jump and shoot" game. This is the "you're a tank" game, so I imagine you're more grounded this time, or at least the platforming stuff is more slowly paced.

Ironic considering that Doom 2016 aka Doom 4 ended up playing more like Serious Sam than a proper Doom game. Then Eternal ended up playing more like a speedrunner hack of Doom 2016 more than any shooter of old. CroTeam should have taken over the mainline series and the platformer Doom that takes itself too seriously should have been a spinoff. Wouldn't be the first time, anyone here remembers Doom RPG?
We haven't had a proper Doom game in decades now, it's arguable if Doom 3 counts but I would rather have that over nu-Doom that seems to want to do everything but be Doom.

I’ve seen serious Sam 4. I’d rather have 10 Hugos and his warhammer 40k fetish over a single Croatian shitshow.

4 tried to do a little too much, but OVERALL I think they've been a consistently good dev. 4 was still good but perhaps a bit overambitious and a case of being a little undercooked in some spots, but I wouldn't call it AWFUL.

I don't think id is in any rush for a new go anytime soon.
Being honest, I dont think Live Action works for anything larger than a 5 minute montage like the Fight Like Hell trailer.
Maybe if they got the Hardcore Henry guy.
Idealy I could see some short for Doom, Wolfenstein and Quake, on 2d, bring Gendy Tartakovsky and get him to do with as little dialog as possible
Doom 3 plasma sounds great.

TBH, a lot of the stuff on 2016 were already on the cancelled Doom 4, cant really say a 2010 mod was the only base when the 2007 teasers already had literally one of the glory kill animations (the knee to the face)

Replace aliens with demons and you already have a better "Hell on Earth" scenario than what Doom Eternal has shown us. Hell, that awful COD ripoff Doom 4 concept was better.
Gameplay wise, yeah it is a bit lacking, but I will take a straight shooter over an ADHD zoomer speed running troon-shoot wearing the skin of an old franchise.

Siberian Mayhem is pretty much what Serious Sam 4 should have been in the first place. Shame it's so short.

It would be REALLY helpful if you linked what you are talking about, because everything I heard about it was a mix of arma and doom monsters. Which doesn't sound AWFUL conceptually in its own right, but they scrapped it and croteam made SS3BFE out of the scraps.

But considering they completely scrapped so much works showed they didn't know how to make shit fun, and croteam IS a talented studio, so I don't buy the idea that it was just fucking great and they threw it out.
