I will keep bitching about Doom Eternal here instead of the general vidya thread. I've been playing it on UV.

I think I'm fairly far along in the game now, as there isn't much left to unlock. There's really just so little to really like, although the arena gunplay is good enough that I can stand to hate-play it.

I really despise how the game clobbers you over the head with autistic lore, acting like you should know from the beginning who Deag Snoke is or whoever the hell, and the Argent homeworld, and the Betrayer, and the Maykrs, and...

Doom did not need to be a "deep lore" game. I just want the game to shut the hell up.

The lazy spawn-arenas are basically a trope at this point. I've lost track of how many times I got killed because a Cyber-Mancubus or Hell Knight spawned behind me as I was fighting another large demon. It's just a cheap way to make a game challenging. Yeah, I didn't know a pair of Hell Knights would spawn right there at exactly the moment I killed the last Arachnotron, because I'm not psychic, great play.

Jump puzzles in FPS have never been welcome. Nobody has ever liked them. Anybody who says they like them is simply lying. I'm pretty sure I spend more time walking around, doing nothing, or navigating jump puzzles, than I do killing demons. Doom II is a comparatively more action-packed experience.

I kind of feel like the weapon modes, runes, equipment, and suit upgrades add needless complexity. It's not all bad, but there's too much of it. I'd probably remove the ice grenade, the flamethrower, and limit each gun to a single alt-fire.

A monster you can't hit at all until it telegraphs an attack doesn't belong in Doom at all. Having the flow of combat interrupted to fight a monster that feels like it belongs in Devil May Cry, not Doom, is just kind of annoying.

And lastly, level design is just boring, the same old linear run-the-gauntlet shit we've seen in every FPS since 2001. Not being able to backtrack until the end is irritating, why have point-of-no-return drops at all? Just let me backtrack, faggots.

I like the Meat Hook, so there's that, I guess.

I beat Doom Eternal just now, and wouldn't you believe it, after all those self-indulgent lore drops, the ending cinematic is just Doomguy stabbing the Icon of Sin and walking away. I have zero desire to play the DLC.

One other thing I found that I rather dislike is your Sigil sword and the BFG. Since these weapons are powered by collectibles rather than normal ammunition, they're really just get-out-jail-free cards, and it's usually pretty obvious when you're supposed to use them. No, dummy, don't waste a Sigil on a hell knight, they gave you one because you're going to fight two cyberdemons. But oh, haha, neither of those weapons work on that retarded shield guy. All in all, I found the game to be kind of a chore to play. It had its moments, but in the end, there's not really any meaningful difference between one spawn room and another. They're all played the same way, zip around in a circle and take out whichever demon is fast enough to chase you. And finally, the attempt to turn Doom into a lore-heavy series really falls flat. Nobody cares about the history of "Argent D'nur." It was better when Doomguy was just a space marine having a bad day.

I don't recommend it, and it's killed any interest I had in The Dark Age, which was already minimal.

The best time to get into the DLC is immediately after finishing the main campaign before you get rusty, since they're significantly harder (the unfun bullshit kind of hard). However, I also 100% do not recommend playing them at all due to the aforementioned unfun bullshit. Instead watch ZeroMaster's no hud ultra nightmare playthroughs where he demolishes both of them in like 2 hours total.

Agreed, the best time to play games that aren't fun or interesting is never. Since the challenge of Doom Eternal is solely derived from how many Super Heavy enemies the spawn arena shits out at once and/or making you do some dumb bullshit while heavy enemies keep spawning up your ass (FIND THE POWER TOTEM WE HID IN THE ENVIRONMENT LOL), I already know and have zero interest in more. I read the plot summaries on the Doom wiki, and that filled in the rest of the lore with lame bullshit. Uncovering the true lore of Wigartha was more interesting.

You'd love the possession mechanic, then. Imagine ANY demon randomly becoming a superheavy on steroids that's also immune to stagger, certain weapons, with unbreakable weakspots and after it dying you need to focus and kill the emerging possessing spirit which can only be damaged with the plasma gun's beam mode. The final boss revolves entirely about that shit, and you have to fight two simultaneously.

Disabling game features or mechanics is fundamentally bad game design. I don't like any game that does this. You shouldn't give a player a set of tools, say, "Here, figure out how to use these to solve problems, whatever works best for you," and then say, "Just kidding, you've been learning the game wrong the whole time." I also didn't like how seemingly every enemy, no matter how large and lumbering, can dash-dodge and jump across any cap or up any cliff. Gave the game a weird feel.

DOOM: Dark Ages was kind of "meh" at release. I've always played keyboard/mouse, but I set up a Bazzite machine with a 780M in my living room and am playing with a controller. At 960p with FSR, I'm getting between 55-60 FPS . I've cruised through the campaign and have put some hours into it. I don't know why it is different, but HOLY SHIT, it made it a lot more fun.

Rebecca Heineman, the girl who single handedly made that absolutely insanity that was the 3DO Doom port passed away yesterday.

Rip
He made the 3DO port when he was still a man named William Heineman. He would then later change his name to Rebecca and go on to marry Paul Jaquays, but only after Paul changed his name to Jennell, becoming perhaps the highest-profile "transbian" couple in the gaming industry.

Both of them left behind wives and children to be male "lesbians."

It's the most bog-standard of the three games, but it's still a fun time.

William Salvador Heineman
"Around 2003, Heineman was diagnosed with gender dysphoria and began to transition to a woman. She formally changed her given name to Rebecca Ann. Following the transition, Heineman lived as a lesbian."

Not a "girl". Just an ancient faggot troon that transitioned in 2003, long after the "glory days" you keep hearing of in interviews. That thing was a troon for so long, that normie media couldn't tell the difference.

One less horror in the world. Don't care if you think that's edgy.

To think that they left more Chris-Chans in this world. The horror.

Pretty sure the weirdos from Troonworld and ZTroon are crying right now at the loss of one of their kind.

You could have just said they made a non-Doom game and called it "Doom", that's what it amounts to. Then they did it again with Dark Ages. I still don't know who this is supposed to appeal to, especially with Eternal, but I do know I have never met a single Eternal fanboy who wasn't some low IQ subhuman tourist.
The formula was there, just take Doom 2016 and make it better and yet they still fucked it up. Twice. Same thing happened with Wolfenstein after it got political, thank god that iD forgot they own Quake, it would 100% get the same treatment.
